Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

On what he was saying at the top of the segment, O.C. is easily at the level, creatively, of a Nas or a Jay-Z who people jock super hard. I don't think he ever made a record even approaching the commercialness that they indulged in though. When he showed the remotest sign of moving in that direction, with 'Jewelz', people got mad at him. I remember people being super mad at "Far From Yours" for having singing on it and "We Just Can't Go Wrong" for being a love song. It bugged me out. For me 'Jewelz' was the epitome. A whole album produced by Primo, DITC and Beatminerz? And that's the record that gets shit on for "selling out"? GTFO. 'Jewelz' to me cemented him as one of the GOATS.

What’s crazy is homie’s favorite cuts are banging, but I like OC’s life songs over everything else. When homie is speaking on his lady, or the cut where he not this female or anything pertaining to life, he’s at his absolute best cause he has a good story to tell. Homie has adult rap music and I wish his music reached a lot more listeners, but big up to the brother OC.

OC is such a real brotha, Word Life was my first DITC album i've heard, i was young, didnt understand many of lyrics, cause of the language barrier, but after a while, these people was my teachers, inspiration that lives forever, i was born when OC got part in Fudge Pudge by Organized Konfusion, that was first song where i discovered this marveleous brotha. My comment is longer than usual cause DITC is playing main role in my life & my perspective of hip-hop is different, cause these brothers are the purest example of hip-hop in my opinion. Him receiving flack was just from certain Kats from NYC, cause everyone else lived that shit. OC is an amazing MC and all his albums are just as good or close to the classic Jewels. NYC back in the day gave Nas flack for It was Written, Mobb Deep album Infamy was Str8 🔥, but they gave it shit off of a banging ass song with 112. They just wanted to hear rappers talk about the block and stay exactly the same as their first album with no growth, but the more successful you get, the more you see, so every growing MC grows.

Just always felt It's My World should have been the lead single -- Primo at that time was untouchable, I get the beat being sort of "out of tune" with the lyrical content -- but to me that is kind of what makes that song so great -- that beat and the lyrics are other worldly ; I think the album -- which was still a great album -- wouldn't have been as overlooked because of Far From Yours (which I liked, btw). It's My World though -- that song to me represents a moment in time. Also always thought how crazy it was that Born to Live dropped and Take You There (Pete Rock/CL) dropping at the same time with essentially the same beat -- Born to Live and of course Time's Up are incredible.

I'm gonna keep it real, as a New York the Mecca of Hip Hop and from Queens Us Queens cats were always super Lyrical, Nas and all of Queens Bridge including Prodigy, LL originally, G- Rap all the way up to Bronson, back then I was hating on Jewelz too due to the R&B influence BUT now I love that album, it took some time to get off that Hip Hip is just underground if you get radio spins you sold out Mentality.... Peace to OC!

🔥🔥🔥👑O.C.👑🔥🔥🔥 - ‘Word Life ‘🔥🔥🔥 You lack the minerals and vitamins, irons and the niacin Fuck who did I offend, rappers, sit back, I’m ‘bout to begin Bout foul talk you squawk, never even walked the walk More less destined to get tested, never been arrested My album will manifest many things that I saw, did, or heard about All told firsthand, never word of mouth What’s in the future for the fusion in the changer? Rappers are in danger, who will use wits to be a remainder? When the missile is aimed to blow you out of the frame Some will keep their limbs and some will be maimed The same suckers with the gab about killer instincts Will turn bitch and knowing damn well they lack in this division The connoisseur cracking your head with a four-by-four Realize, sucker, I’ll be the coming like Noah Always simmer you down, perpetrating façade and what you consider an image To me, this is just a scrimmage I’m feel I’m stone, not ‘cause I bop or wear my cap cocked The more emotion I put into it, the harder I rock Those who pose lyrical but really ain’t true, I feel (Their time’s limited, hardrocks’ too)

I thought "O C" was a dope album but it can't touch "O.C"'s first album "Word...Life" album. Songs like "Times Up", "Word .Life", & "Born 2 Live Remix" are just the albums dopest songs. Then we get to "Jewelz". Just like it's predecessor had a few dope joints. But the album production was bland. Lyrics was there but the production wasn't as hard as "Word Life" album. The song I didn't care for was the joint he sampled "Tevin Campbell" "Truly Yours". I just didn't like that beat.... 👍😎👍😎👍😎👍
