I respectfully disagree with the grip behind the back. Grabbing the judogi behind the back turns this throw into Tsuri Goshi. O Goshi is traditionally done by pressing uke's hip forward until they are loaded on your own hip, not by grabbing the dogi. Also, if your hand is as high as shown in the video, as in almost between uke's shoulderblades, it makes it extremely difficult to control their hips, allowing them to back away and drop their weight. Hand should be on the iliac crest (hip bone); preferably the far hip. The footwork and kuzushi are both good, as is the kake. Overall not a bad demonstration.

Hi David, first of all, thank you so much for taking the time to comment. Much appreciated. On the o-goshi topic and the grip - we have another video where the differences between competitive application and kata form are shown. Please check here later if you have the time: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4CceYxnZaqoZqs Also, in competition, not taking advantage of a possible grip is not efficient, hence grabbing behind the back provides you with that extra compression. I myself wanted to go deeper into it in the early days of judo and while I was also conflicted with the grip, I realized that not taking the grip in competition is less efficient. Why wouldn't you take advantage of the leverage for that extra tightness. In tsuri goshi the grip is above the armpit over the shoulder and graps the belt or higher. In o-goshi, it is under (ko-tsuri as well). The name of o-goshi derives from the big area of contact that your hand does with uke's back. By definition and kata it does not rely on gripping and you should not grab if you do kata. Nevertheless, you will have hard time finding an o-goshi execution without that grip. I challenge you to find one ;) That is valid for many of the kata forms, e.g., yoko gake kata form vs the competitive one. Let me know what you think, but I myself also respectfully disagree. Don't take my word for it. Check these two olympians. Ilias iliadis (gold medalist olympian) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGOsZIRred-khsU travis stevens (silver medalist olympian) explaining O-goshi kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3bRiWeVhd6Bhpo I really look into detail for any content we put on the channel to make sure it is 100% legit (at least every best effort) Once again, thank you for your time and appreciate your comments. I respect your opinion so let's agree to disagree on this one. Oss
