The pianist is Anthony Burger. He fell and had horrible burns to his hands as a baby, doctors said he’d never have full use. Well, at 3 he was plucking out harmonies on a piano by ear, he went on to a music school and was touring with the Kingsmen, a famous gospel group, at 15. He passed away from a sudden heart attack at 44. It was an awful loss, he was so extremely talented, and his testimony is amazing. He was a truly gifted musician, I’m thankful we have his recordings to enjoy.

How can one not be moved by this song, the pianist Anthony Burger and singer David Phelps. I have watched several vocal coaches be absolutely mezmerized by David's and this O Holy Night presentation. They are ALL simply dumbfounded by his God given talent. David has devoted this talent to honor and glorify Jesus Christ.

I've heard a dozen people react to this David Phelps masterpiece, but only you recognized the amazing pianist. I also am grateful that you know the background of the singer and others involved in the production. I see so many reactors that don't do ever minimal research. One can give a genuinely fresh reaction and still know in advance some basic facts about the artists. How many times have I seen reaction to Dimash by people who could not pronounce his name, identify his home country, and have no idea what kind of unusually productive relationship he has with the pianist, Igor Krutoy, sharing his stage so often. For that matter, I wonder how composers feel when people sing covers and credit the original singer but not the composer who provided the song. Oops, "I stopped preaching and went to meddling." I wish I could remember who I first heard say that. Thanks. I'm an aging church chorister from North Carolina. Thanks for your excellent work.

All of the things you mentioned are a big part of it. But also the incredible message of the song. I lost my dad around Christmas just over 5 years ago. It was both the hardest and the best Christmas of my life. Nothing else mattered that year. I didn't care what I got for Christmas, or even if I got anything at all. Only Jesus mattered. This. Is. Masterful! Spectacular is the perfect adjective for this, thank you, Christi! Wow. David Phelps manages to give new meaning to the words as he has us listening anew to a very familiar song. Beyond lovely! And thank you for the shout-out to the pianist! I was thinking about it and didn't want to say anything but, yes, this performance (and reaction) are excellent reminders. Of life, and of light, and of hope, and of how indeed the slave is our brother (be it the figurative 'slave' or the literally ones, for too many in the world still are enslaved, and too many whose ancestors were slaves still carry ongoing oppression that some among the more privileged are reluctant to admit or relinquish). We are all accountable to one another, regardless of what faith we hold, who we pray to, where we were born, what our body looks like, how we dress, who we love, or what language we speak. We are all one. And in this season of light, this performance was a perfect illumination of it. Thank you for this reaction to such a masterful and moving performance. Happy Holidays to all, and a Merry Christmas season to you and yours.
@stacydacosta24374 жыл бұрын
It is masterful and spectacular. "We are all one" was not the message on that night though, nor is it really in this hymn. Consider that Jesus, Christ, lived in 1st century Judea a "protectorate" of Rome under the Pax Romana - achieved through oft times brutal military force and always oppressive tax-tribute to Caesar from the conquered or "protected". Jesus neither sought to end Roman oppression nor did He lobby for "change". It was not even remotely His purpose in coming. Jesus didn't come to make the general population of the world's human beings one. In fact He declared that the Gospel of Peace and He Himself would have the opposite effect on earth in the world: Jesus, Christ 34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn “‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law- 36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household. “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth" (to stop conflict, war, disagreement, hatred, strife ... on the earth). His claims are always counter self-rule and counter the instinctual course that human beings embark on in their life in the world. They were during Jesus' contemporary times and in every time since including now offensive and enraging to all sorts of dispositions, ideas, desires, wants, and inclinations human beings have and pursue. He teaches that those who genuinely love and follow Him will invite scorn, detraction, hatred, shunning, broken relationships, and enmity from others. So no He did not come to make all human beings one, or to bring peace to the earth. He came so that God could make an intentional offer of peace and goodwill from Himself, God, toward human beings, so that any human being who chooses to accept Gods offer of peace and friendship, could have it ... and have it completely and eternally from the moment of decision. The world has two sets of imperfect, flawed people living in it at any given time: those who are in rebellion against or at war with God, and those who have accepted peace and friendship with God, having been sought after ... pursued by the Prince of Peace Himself, who is both the enabler and the guarantor of that peace and fellowship. The peace that God offers is not like anything the world has to offer or is capable of offering. Jesus, Christ John 14:27 "27Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid." The Prophet Isaiah Isaiah 9:6 "6For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.7Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end." Some 700 years later Jesus, Christ Matt11:28-30 28“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” A blessed Christmas to you and too all! Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, goodwill, toward men. His intention of peace and goodwill toward human beings remains and His offer is still extended to any who would stop, turn, grasp and hold it. "Fall on your knees, .... Oh Night divine, when Christ was born...",. Indeed. Magnificent hymn, joyfully and magnificently delivered by David Phelps.

@@stacydacosta2437 you are certainly entitled to your faith and interpretation of the hymn and humanity, as I am to mine. The Heaven DVD where he does No More Night in front of a lot of the same artists is also very telling and emotional. The looks on their faces say it all. The power of David’s voice, the power of the lyrics he is singing and the promise of what is in store for us as Christians when we all do finally do go to our true home just all blend and make the video that much more emotional. The other artists know the power and mastery David has over his voice. But the way he also sings with such conviction and delivers the message the lyrics are trying to convey is something that very few can do like he does. He is so talented, so powerful, yet is so very humble about his talented powerhouse voice. The way he acts at the end of this video shows that. He just wanted God to be glorified and have the praise. He tried to just ease back into the group without being noticed. It was Bill who stopped him and made him come back. David almost looked embarrassed to be stopped. He doesn’t want the spot light. He wants only for his performances to give our Lord, Jesus Christ the praise and glory. Not him.

Quite frankly, there may not be a better living tenor than David Phelps. And for the record he sings the whole song in a higher key, and a higher "money note" than any of his peers. David Phelps chose to use his talents to glorify God, a less direct path to secular notoriety, but his gifts are finally starting to become unmistakably noted. Don't forget to give his Nessun Dorma a listen. Its good recorded, but stunning live.

I have seen this performance many times now and I NEVER tire of it because King David (as I call him) nails it so wonderfully! David is a wonderful, funny, kind man. I've met him a few times because I'm a Phelps Phan!

Absolutely love David Phelps. In the top 5 of all time tenors. On one website it had David #1 over Pavarotti.

Thank you so much for this video - your reaction was as beautiful, honest, heartfelt, and moving as David's singing! Thank you for sharing your wisdom and vulnerability with us!

Hello The Voice Love Co. I am a new subscriber to your channel. There are but a handful of reactors that I follow who make it about the artist and not themselves. You are a breathe of fresh air. Those of us who love these artists feel like they are ours and love when someone else loves them as much as we do. You explain things so well -- things that we may not know or understand. Just some trivia -- his GVB members called him the Android. David is unparalleled in my humble opinion. I look forward to watching more of your reactions. Thank you!

David must have done something musically very extraordinary at the 6:50 mark judging by Mark Lowry's reaction standing directly behind David.

I came across your reaction video just browsing through. This is by far my favorite rendition of what might be my favorite Christmas carol, and I love to browse the vids to watch other people's reactions when THEY also hear it for the first time, especially professional voice coaches. I know what I "feel" when it comes to certain songs/videos, but it's nice to hear and learn about the technical side of any great performance, and you do a great job. Thanks for checking out this specific one. IMO the reason that there seems to be "something" different or "special" about this performance is that David presumably "talks the talk" and "walks the walk": That is, he's a Christian man singing Christian music with an absolutely God-given talent that few (if any) can rival, and with that comes that special anointing that the Holy Spirit gives when you hear it that ONLY HE can give. You can hear it, and obviously you can feel it, from note one. Contrast that to other (secular) singers who absolutely have awesome talents but are basically just up there "singing a song", but will not sound or "feel" like this one. ABSOLUTELY positively I concur with other posters here when they recommend "Mary did you know?"--VOCTAVE FEATURING MARK LOWRY, also my fav rendition of this beautiful song. Mark Lowry is the one who actually wrote "Mary did you know?" just fyi to the good folks reading this. (Forgive me if I insult anyone's intelligence here, not sure how common that knowledge is.) Same thing, you will feel "something" different here vs most other renditions from secular artists just singing a Christmas carol, simply because Mark wrote it, he lives it, and you can tell he feels every word. He and this version are anointed.

Many of those, who know, are astounded at the talent that David Phelps Displays! I however, am astounded by the God that gives David his talent! To bestow such a blessing for us all through the talent of one man! Bespeeks of David''s faith in Christ and all of Christ's gifts given David! His offerings always honor and glorify Christ his Lord & Savior!

Like David, you also showed deeper emotion in this song. I hope you know the Gospel message of Christ's birth, death, and resurrection that resonates through this music! I've watched your reactions before, but this one really choked you up--that was moving, too. And you're right, many of these people have gone home now--they lived what they sang, and it wasn't for money. Blessings!
