To all the people saying high notes aren't music and they should be playing the Arban's book: there's no such thing as being good at one thing and becoming a professional musician. So if you think you're good enough at classical trumpet to write off lead playing, which is an art, then I'm sorry for you. There's a difference between barely getting the notes and making them into music. That was music. Perfectly in tune, great tone, and not forced. I'd like to see you play Arban's or anything with Wayne and see who ends up on top.

I've been playing trumpet for 45 years. I've studied out of the Arbans book. I'm still studying it. I don't think there are too many trumpet players that can play everything in the Arbans. If you can, than you are a great trumpet player. The upper register, as all horn players know, is very difficult to do. Especially clearly. Wayne, in my opinion, is one of the best trumpet players I had ever heard. That even includes MF, who was sloppy compared to Wayne. The tonality is incredible. Have you ever tried making your horn scream in the upper register and then come down and hold a middle d like Wayne does at the end of the song? I agree with Amanda. Wayne is unbelievable.

@tpstrat14 Success can be found in overcoming limits. Look at Wayne Bergeron. He overcame the range limit of his trumpet and see how successful he is :) I admit it gets annoying when people just squeal out some "high notes" but Bergeron isn't squealing it out. He plays all those notes, whether growling low or screaming high.
@Goku5963313 жыл бұрын
@bach72star Personally, I call the Top space (Just above the staff) G a high or top G, the same as your notation but this category of "high", or "top" stays until around an F (The space above 3rd ledger line). A super F, this continues until the C (Space above the 6th ledger line), which I then call a double C.

I love how he uses a lacquered yellow brass horn, not nickel plated. Something about that to me says he is an ass (trumpet stereotype), but he is modest. A genuinely good person. Granted, that particular horn may just work best for him too.
@Gekkigami11 жыл бұрын
yeah his sound is definitely better than 99 % of all trumpet players, even on a double high D ! There's a video of him live with the Tom Kubis band, and he nails the song, with the same, perfect, "phat" sound... Check out his "Do you Hear what I hear", another Kubis song, pretty amazing too.
@XgundamwingZeroX13 жыл бұрын
I can play the octave above that but its just a squeal. I wasnt sure what I was playing at first but I got out my chromatic tuner and it said C 8. I dont think its possible to play that high and it not be a squeal. Its just something to do to show off to friends. Wayne's high note was beautiful though. Made me think of a violin lol.
@bach72star13 жыл бұрын
@spazzydude9 ACTUALLY, once you leave the staff (G), you are in "high" territory. The G above that (4 ledger lines) it becomes "double." The G above that would be known as "triple." Do you know anything about theory?
@paulmcgoveran39196 жыл бұрын
Can't imagine what musician would not like this, sorry to the few thumbs down, this is magnificent. The Phil Cobb arrangement mentioned below is a bit out of style and a tone down I think. Wayne is a superb player and I agree with all the comparisons to Maynard. Much cleaner and spot on. I also agree with comments made earlier about Maynard in his younger days. Get a hold of Maynard Ferguson - Verve Jazz Masters 52, with tracks recorded during the 50's. Maynard's playing is fantastic. He plays beautiful jazz and the upper register is so very clean. I think he became a bit of caricature in the 70's. Just to put it all in perspective, I heard Doc Severinsen at the Canadian National Exposition (CNE) in 1975. Two nights in a row he played the Carpenter's Ballad "A Song for You". After many minutes of up and down the horn, from low G's to Eb above high C, he finished with a run to double Eb. As he did so many times on the Tonight Show, he held the double Eb with one hand on the horn and took the band out with the other. Breathtaking playing two nights in a row, outdoors in a bandshell. Phenomenal!!

Ya, the 'kiss' is a context thing. It is the same pop-singers do, especially chicks. It punctuates the power... The more nuanced version is the lead-player tongue-stops when playing in the tutti ensemble scenarios, harder to hear, but damn impressive to others players....
