Another fantastic episode. Javed Akhtar is such a humble and extremely Talented person. The way he analyzes and approaches music and A R Rehman is fantastic. One of the best albums Rahman has ever produced. The longevity and timelessness of each song is evident event till today. Yeh joh des hai tera is the anthem of india now. No independence day republic day goes without this song. What a brilliant song. The shenai refrain is a masterstroke...nobody can sing this song without humming the refrain in your mind. It is almost like a rhythm. and there is a beat which goes continuously almost like heartbeat. Rahman touched our hearts with this. A genius. We have seen the movie 1000 times...and still want to see it. Thank you O2

Great episode O2… God bless.. writing an episode of Indian film music documentary.. Let me clarify. I mentioned great episode because of few minutes only. Not about the praise on AR Rahman, because too much has been showered on A R Rahman. Though he deserves more, a lot lot more. But I’m talking about the comment from Javed Saab. There is the way the instrumentation has been used, who could think of it? Who used Shehnai like that ever?? Rahman’s work is like opening a new door for music. If you open one door per episode, you need to do few thousand episodes. I can tell my story where in my cruise ship, I met the musicians who perform different different people song and they come from schools of music from Los Angeles and others. They said you guys are so lucky having ARR in your country. Why he doesn’t do English staff so that we could do, but it doesn’t stop us from listening to them. Even we don’t understand. We eagerly wait for any ARR work to find something new. We don’t follow any Composer other than him. he said for Indian audience. We have to do a lot of shit songs, but ARR work is sublime. We did one evening based on ARR and we got lesser Indian crowd. So in your own country, you don’t value ARR, but the people who came, they came to meet us in the backstage and hugged us. But while performing ARR staff as an artist, it touched us like nothing touched ever.. I felt so proud.

5:19 Such is Swades that the lyricist himself is saying about his own two songs. Whereas we have films today that come and go without their songs being remembered even for a month and here are these masterpieces whose every single song and even BGM is way more enduring than today’s most films. Thanks O2 for making me feel like the child I was. Swades is one of the best films ever regardless of whether it was a social film or not, just as a standalone storytelling music performances and world building of Swades is a rare feat that Indian cinema rarely achieves.

I know right?! I think over the years he's done less and less impactful movies. One, such kind of movies are hardly made. This movie is grounded in reality - it captures the indian milieu really well. Right now Bollywood is filled with people who are so urban in their language and thoughts that they can't come up with such masterpieces. Plus, this movie didn't do well. SRK is very formulaic now. Unfortunately, he's not an artist - he's just a popular star.

ARR has had enough awards. But to think that Main Hoon Na was better than Swades is a nonsense. Best playback singing belonged to ARR easily. Anyway he is well celebrated, awarded and virtually worshipped so we shouldn’t be bitter.

I agree with Akhtar sahab that AR Rehman deserved a national award for his rendition of 'Yeh Jo Desh.." I remember watching this film in the theatre with a friend on New Year's Eve of 2004 late show and half way through, it was New Year. I was completely engrossed in the film. I actually disliked the mainstream Bollywood films then (even now) and also have never been a Shah Rukh Khan fan. However in that film, I thought SRK was magnificent and the film was out of this world and so thought-provoking for its time. The themes in there are still relevant today. Ashutosh Gowarikar is an excellent filmmaker. He makes his films with a lot of passion and heart. Even after watching Lagaan, I felt the same but Swades is a classic in its own right.

Definitely can’t agree more with Javed Akhtar on this that ARR should have won the national award or at least Filmfare award where none had been bestowed upon him. It was like another passionate rendition of a patriotic song after Vande Mataram. Perhaps the jury of both the awards must have thought it’s pointless to give away award to a music director for singing or else how could they give it a miss giving award to such a prolific composer cum singer for such a soul stirring song! Don’t know on what basis the jury select songs especially when another singer for the same album received national award, ARR almost came close to winning the award. The way Javed Akhtar said about the unconventional usage of instrumentation especially the way Shehnai was played in the title song is a masterstroke of the genius that he is! It is these small nuances as he said that set apart each and every song of ARR unique from the crowd!

However great the movie is, it is still a copy of Kannada movie “chigurida kanasu” which is based on Kannada novel “Marali Mannige” written by great Dr. Shivaram Karanth who was Jnanapeeta awardee, directed many dramas and yakshagana. They neither gave credit to movie nor novel. Sathya who is the co-writer is a kannadiga, simply modified the story where instead of protagonist going from Delhi to remote village in Karnataka comes from USA. Fun part is they still can’t get a suitable north indian name for Grand mother. It remained as Kaveri Amma and the actress is also from Karnataka. More funnier part is NASA engineer struggled more than a BA graduate to generate electricity.

Another point which was included in my research but Javed sahab said the same thing in different angle. Rahman songs are being played much lesser than other songs.. but this is something being done very consciously not necessarily against arr because everything is business. How many people in India wants to listen Dil Se compared to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai? The number says Dil Se was sold only 40% of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai..but can u compare the music?? Simple but effective scientific explanation is there.. people can relate to music which they can sing orr Humm easily not being professionally trained singer.. people can sing Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga but can they sing dheemi dheemi?? As Javed sahab said a lot of people came and gave hits .. so for business the hit songs will be played more than any arr song... but music history will remember arr and not the people giving 15 hits in one year I will quote again one of Satyajit Ray's comment "we have backward audience "... In our country Tiger zinda hai will make 500 crores but Film like kahani will make 60 crores..

Just stop presenting ar rehman as god of music, ofcourse he is good at it but most of his music inspired by arabic and rd Burman

I disagree. Eventhough AR Rehman is good composer, but he is bad singer.

he is good singer why? because he is not classically trained to sing... but still sings the emotion of song using his music techniques(rendering 11:00) for songs he belief he can justify, he is definitely not bad singer ,different might be...Unique mostly
