Oak Meadow Grade 6: English and Social Studies | Flip Through and Review

I know this video is old, but I'm looking into Oak Meadow for my 6th grader. Do you need to use the English and History together? We have a language Arts we enjoy. Is it open and go or is there a lot of planning? I tried looking more here on KZbin but you're the only one I've seen that talks a lot about Oak Meadow.

Hi, take a look at my recent video that I’ll link below , check the timestamps for the end of year review of Oak Meadow (after the second time using it, with my youngest and comparison with both). No you do not need to do both . If you opt not to do ELA, the books used will be optional suggestions to add if you like to the history but not scheduled. ETA: it’s not open and go. Nothing from OM is. Although I have always found it easy to plan with clear outlines of what needs to be accomplished for the lesson, the day to day pace is up to you. I know this is a year old but it still has soo much relevance for me so Thank You for this video! Also, is it possible to use the English curriculum alone? I do have something else planned for SS. Is it optional or required?

Yes, it can definitely stand alone. You are given some additional recs if you’re not doing the history.

I have an upcoming 6th grader and we've been doing blossom and Root for pretty much everything since 2nd grade. He did not like the LA notebook for level 5 b&r and seems to be on the downward slide of not wanting to do anything.. I think my pretty relaxed schedule has messed up his ambition a little so I thought maybe stepping up the curriculum with a more structured approach would help him get back into giving his all again. I'm at a loss at what to do honestly but I'm loving the look of oak meadow. Any and all advice would be great.

@@jrg678 hi, the transition stage of upper level work is challenging for a lot of kiddos. There’s really a whole new level of figuring things out again. I have one, a year from high school and youngest in middle school, and the motivation spirals at different stages. I found consistency to be my besties and regular interviews with their inputs, to be my sidekick. That being said, every child is unique and has different root causes that may be causing the resistance. Shoot me a message over on IG and I’ll be happy to chat further. Having more details of your child’s needs and being able to converse back and forth, is better done there.

This was so great to see so in depth. We haven't used oak meadow before, but are checking it out as a possibility for next year. Where does student put their written work? Are there student work pages or do it in a separate notebook?

So glad it was helpful! You use a separate notebook or main lesson book if you prefer to stick to a more Waldorf inspired notebook approach. But definitely separate notebooks, the assignments usually have multiple parts and you have no writing space to work that all out. The math however, with the course book, you have room to work it out and write your answers there too.

@@Arleneandcompany thank you! I like that is is laid out so kids can go at their own pace for the week and has ideas for how to extend or if they need more practice. We have had a hard time finding a good fit for LA for my kiddo going in to 6th. We may give it a try next year.

@@SmithsInTheMaking you can also check out the samples and try a lesson out, see how it goes. It’s definitely very versatile.
