The movie actually does have descent amount to do with the works of William Blake. It pretty much follows the broad outlines of the Blake's second book of prophesy, Milton: A Poem in Two Books. In that, John Milton (a famous dead poet in Blake's time) returns to the Earth in the form of a shooting star from Eden and becomes a Christ like figure who travels through various obstacles in order to die in the western ocean and trigger an apocalypse, all the while pursued by Satan. The apocalypse in Blake's work is usually symbol for the eradication of the bullshit of society. Nobody does not mistake him for the actual poet, but a reincarnation to actualize the book of prophesy. He even takes on the role of Los from the poem. There are numerous other smaller homages.

It always amuses me to think that in Jackie Chan's Shanghai Noon, they actually used Native actors to play Native roles - but Hollywood just cannot get to grips with the concept. Especially when - as much as I love Jackie - his films are usually as culturally sensitive as a brick.

Kyle- add Atanarjuat: the fast runner to your list of films to review! A film made by an inuit director using inuit actors and specifically made for an indigenous audience. Also a fantastic film!!!!

With all of this discussion of acid westerns, I'd love to hear your thoughts on other Western deconstructions with Native actors. "Ravenous" (dir. Antonia Bird) is a genre-hopping bloody mess with a score written by Damon Albarn (as he watched the movie), biting critique of Manifest Destiny and the subjugation of First Nations peoples, and hunger as a metaphor for both ambition and aggression. Plus it's got Begby from "Trainspotting" eating people.

their was another Johnny depp movie in 97 that he directed but didn't release cause it was panned at the Cannes film festival called the brave where he plays a homeless native American who at his last ditch effort he agreed to star in a snuff film

Thankfully most of the Cheyenne characters in longmire are played by First Nation actors for the most part.

I know this video is a few years old, but if anyone’s reading thing, Tanto was original played by a Native American actor.

That misunderstanding about tobacco reminds me of something I've noticed about Anime subs vs dubs. The different translations between sub and dub aren't so much about the different understandings of the language as different understandings of the characters speaking the lines. And of course there's the matter of translating the same word differently in different contexts.

What I find amazing about the movie is that when I was about to see it I went in thinking that there would be boring at some parts, but from beginning to end I was never bored.

I watched Dead Man as a part of a western cinema class, which gave it interesting context. I think we did Stagecoach, High Noon, Django, The Good The Bad and the Ugly, Unforgiven, and perhaps most pertinently, Soldier Blue. Nobody definitely stood out among the native characters in that selection.

Wait...a nerdy white dude that heads out west to start a new career, runs into outlaws, one of which is a cannibal, then meets a sage Native American who is considered an outcast among other native Americans? That sounds familiar... (William Tell Overture plays)

Nobody has to be somehow a reference to Nobody in 'My Name Is Nobody,' a character who deconstructs the spaghetti western he's in.

Nobody from "My Name is Nobody" is in turn a reference to Ulysses in the "Odyssee" , who introduded himself as "Nobody" to the Cyclops he ended up blinding (it's a pun on his name that only works in Ancient Greek).

you mean, Harvest Moon the group and the song Dancing in the moonlight? Really? This movie is what he got out of that particular, group or music? Wait...What he had a really bad trip?! Yikes! 🤪😮 I got the James Brown reference. Yes, I highly recommend "REEL INJUN" I saw that on Netflix. I'm wondering was that last sound bite, from the movie (Annie Get Your Gun) I love that film?😊 Good video I really enjoyed the context.
