That's Liam in the beginning, not Noel. But I imagine they both felt the same. I remember when Oasis hit here in the States. They really were a breath of fresh air. Rock music had become so relentlessly downbeat, at least lyrically. Obviously for Kurt, the depression was real. I mean, he did what he did, so he clearly wasn't bullshitting. But for many, the dark lyrics were just bandwagon-jumping. Dudes who a few years prior were imitating Poison and Motley Crue were now writing songs about how much they hated themselves and how lost they were. 😂 It had gotten stale. So many of them acted embarrassed by fame, and they made a point of never appearing excited about anything. Then the Gallagher brothers came along, giving that all the two-finger salute, being cocky as hell, Liam singing proudly "I'm a rock and roll starrrr!" Oasis ruled.

That's freedom of expression in music regardless of what opinion you might have about it. Its great that Oasis wanted to send out uplifting music for people. It's our biology, environment and influences that make us who we are. I'm not happy all the time craving happy music and messages. Sometimes I am. But other times I want to scream to release anger or cry to release sadness. Kurt had a different experience and felt abandonment as a child being kicked out of his mothers and fathers homes on numerous occasions during a recession in a small poor town even sleeping under a bridge as a teen when he had nowhere to stay. I have similar experiences in my life. So when I'm feeling a certain way it's comforting to know that there are successful people out there sharing the same raw emotions from those hard experiences and not just faking it to bend over because someone doesn't understand it. It's music man. And maybe it's not the same anymore here in North America but we used to have that freedom as any type of artist whether you're a painter, writer, musician or any other kind. It's all controlled now but it didn't used to be like that. On top of all that Kurt was bashed in the media constantly. Pretty tough to write how happy, amazing and accepting the world is when it's not true for you in your life. Art should be raw and real. It's an expression of self. If you don't feel sadness or anger at times you're a robot. I have nothing against Oasis. They've written iconic music and deserve their place in history. But we're all human. Just be you

"I Hate Myself And I Want To Die" is a JOKE title. It's a Kurtism. It's a b-side and isn't on any album and the lyrics are just amusing nonsense. "Runny nose and runny yolk Even if you have a cold still You can cough on me again I still haven't had my full fill". Gallagher is a total git for taking the title literally. I believe Kurt used to say it sarcastically when asked how he was doing. Similar to the way he'd show up at a party and demand of the host "Here we are, now entertain us!" To be funny which ended up in Smells Like Teen Spirit. Kurt was troubled but also quite funny and people continue to completely misunderstand him.

I dont think gallagher was wrong for thinking how he did but he definitely diddnt understand that kurts goal was not to motivate and inspire listeners like him, actually in hindsight kurt diddnt have a goal or any ambition, he simply wanted to portray the pain and passion he felt in his heart and mind. He was a true artist not afraid to embrace the self pity and self loathing because honesty is the best clarity. He did not care to send out hopeful messages he cared to make raw, emotional, honest lyrics and music so that the people who are tortured by the same mentality can resonate and feel less alone in their sufferings. He definitely succeeded with me.

The glorification of suicide or depression is the worst thing for suicidal and depressed people to experience tho, especially if there's no happy ending or light at the end of the tunnel within the writing, because it justifies existing in that realm indefinitely. And then, when their suicidal idol who glorifies darkness actually kills himself, it becomes a demonic enterprise on every level. It's interesting to analyze as a stable music nerd or historian who has no personal investment in the personality of Kurt-- but a lot of kids and teens were all in, and then Kurt cashed out, leaving them feeling even more empty than they did before they got sucked into the cult of his personality.

@l4rkm3ss8 ай бұрын
@@christopher19894 i see your point, i can agree that it can lead to consequences but i think 'glorification' is the wrong word for it. It was more acknowledgment. ofc its always good to look at the world positively but the truth is the world is not positive. There are no real happy endings, to truly feel real passion and love means that tremendous pain is up next. In the end thats just how it is. The only thing we can do is be content with that. Artists like Kurt could see that and wanted to embrace it. Not to glorify the truth but to acknowledge it and display the beauty in the cruelty. Sadly people are very impressionable but that shouldn't stop messages from being sent. Ignorance is bliss but those who want to see past that should have the right to do so. For me this was the soul thing that helped me through my depression, cant say ive gotten rid of it but ive been enlightened, ive been able to make sense of it, i dont want to live, but having music i can resonate with, knowing im not alone in how i see the world, it grounds me and it keeps me here. Cant say that for everyone but its still the case for some. Sorry for the long tangent 😭

The title was a response to all these people, reporters etc constantly asking himself how are you (like the famous t shirt he wore ironically), I don’t think he was actually expressing suicidal it’s at the time. Although in hindsight I see how that’s difficult to believe. They also had a song entitled a rape me that repeated the title many times throughout the song yet it was 100% anti rape and the band had a very hard stance against any kind of violence towards women, in fact the only rule at their shows was no groping the females. So like most thing Gallagher was sadly misinformed.

I believe Noel was ultimately right. I’ve noticed toxic media has done a number on the populations mental health. There have been studies done that show people who watch the news regularly are 10x more depressed compared to those that ignore it. Literally consuming negative media impacts your mind and soul. I mean hell put on one of your favorite songs that is uplifting and euphoric. You will immediately have a pep in your step seconds after listening. Same goes for listening to angsty music. Of course Noel isn’t saying that listening to angsty music will immediately give you depression or make you do the thing the song is talking about. He’s just saying musicians can have a big impact on pop culture. For the record I’m a big Nirvana fan and I get that many people were able to relate to Kurt because of how raw the songs are. But I overall do think Noel was right. Like the larger conversation.

1) it was meant as a joke bc Kurt was tired of everyone saying he was some depressed, gloomy person. 2) if anyone cares to actually look into it, the evidence strongly suggests he was, in fact, murdered. I used to think that the whole “Kurt was killed” crowd were delusional. But then I took a honest look into what the evidence was and I came to the conclusion that Kurt was a victim of foul play. There are just way too many pieces of evidence that don’t point to suicide as the cause of death. Most recently some info from his autopsy was leaked. Kurt apparently had a substantial gash in his leg. How did that happen! Could it have been resulting from a struggle?

He was definitely a victim, look up the videos of the guy who said who killed him, they found him 8 days later with his head cut off in a train yard. Eliciting a response, even one of disdain, is art. Cobain was a genuine Rembrandt of his time. Oasis drives on Nirvana's roads.

As much as I love both bands, I think Noes point towards this is a very good point, since Nirvana was such an inspiration to youngers, releasing a message like that can cause a lot of problems by effecting fans by idolising them with these negative comments, but it's also up to Kurt what he names his songs but I can massively understand Noes point

If people feel upset or depressed and want to write about it, they can. It literally doesn't matter a single bit what Gallagher thinks.

Who care what Noel thinks? Kurt had serious drug, pain, depression and ADHD issues which he would never understand. Kurt was speaking his truth, and it’s not for Noel to tell his what to say.

I really like both Nirvana and Oasis. I think that some people need sometimes hear happy songs and sometimes some darker. People are different, listen different music and that's okay. Noel of course had right to tell his opinion, but Kurt also had right to write these kind of songs. And I aprecciate comments where is explained meaning of the song. :-)

Honesty is what made Cobain and Nirvana legendary. But let's not fool ourselves into thinking this was a joke...he killed himself a year later. What we say and project manifests itself. Gallagher was right that music is too powerful a medium to take lightly (I am paraphrasing)...be careful.

Love Oasis, but the older I get, the more I kinda really don’t care for Liam and to a lesser extent Noel. Well at least how they acted when they were famous in general. They don’t relate to the depressing stuff, so they shyt all over it? Okay, some people have problems and the “be optimistic why are you even saying that sad stuff” take I’ve heard them say, comes off so vapid, shallow, disconnected etc. Telling depressed people to just be happy isn’t going to do anything for them, it’s wildly insulting. Idk, don’t wanna take simple comments this much to heart, but I just think it’s whack as all hell that that was their take at the time

If it wasn’t Noel’s speed, he didn’t have to listen, but we all know Kurt had more talent in his little finger than Noel PLUS his brother would ever have in their entire lives. He was JEALOUS. Artists are not responsible for the mental health of their fans. If their fans are depressed, they’re not going to suddenly feel happy if their favorite band starts singing about butterflies and rainbows. They’ll probably seek out different musicians at that point.
