It's sad that Robbie's father developed Parkinson's, but it was beautiful to see how Liam and Robbie became forgiving and respectful to each other because of that.

I’m the same. I’m a big fan of both. If I was on Desert Island Discs, they’d both at least be on my shortlist. But I’m a bit younger than them, from near where Oasis are from, so identified with them, and went to the same rehab that Robbie wrote ‘Angels’ (which Noel said he wished he’d written, remember). There are angels in the main entrance hall in the corners and some church people who came every week told me he spent a lot of time in there lying on the benches, as did I. There’s a pond with fish in too. Guess my taste is quite eclectic as I don’t mind a bit of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, too. Why close yourself off to beauty in this world, however it comes, and from who?

Like most of the feuds surrounding Oasis, it was media fuelled and media driven. But what Robbie did was play them at their own game for his own fame. Unfortunately for Oasis, just as they were turning on him he was ascending to a pop stardom, one that hasn’t been comparable in the Uk since imo. He really was huge for about three years or so. Angels probably got as much, if not more air play than Wonderwall during those peak years. Towards the mid 2000’s it just got a bit sad, seeing them pop up in celebrity gossip columns, or attending the Brit awards that had lost any edge that it might have had in the mid 90’s, and so no one cared. I think Liam has mellowed out more and that helps. But so does knowing that your rivalry antics won’t get the press it once did anymore

@@abcxyz53 don’t think they made him suicidal, he was already like that from the get go. Oasis were close to becoming more of a nostalgia act. Yes they still had/have a large following, but their music by then wasn’t as relevant or interesting. I said the Brit awards had lost its edge. Even so, I think they have ‘outdone’ Robbie and Blur yeah.

I would agree, his first two albums kind of slid under the radar (especially his first) and probably most his biggest hits are on those two (especially his first album, which often gets over looked), but there was probably a period from 1999-2002 after he had found his feet as a solo artist where a Robbie album was getting more hype in the build up to its release than a Oasis album was.... I think Noel probably took a shine to Robbie a lot more than he let on, but like a lot of these guys over the year, once that shine wore off, he was fast to throw them under the bus, and as usual, used Liam as his mouth piece (this is one thing I have noticed since the split.... it used to be Liam that would come out with the "controversial" comments, and Noel would sweep in and look like he was the level headed one.... but since the break up, Liam has completely mellowed, and Noel has become something of the "bitter" one)

You missed a key scene in the feud. After Robbie Williams sent a wreath to The Sun newspaper, reporters were waiting at the airport for Liam to land to get his reaction, since he had been out of the country at the time. It was here that Liam said he was going to batter Robbie Williams. It was this threat that then prompted Robbie's boxing match idea at the BRITS 2000. So, Robbie didn't just come out of nowhere with the idea of fighting Liam. 😊I looked for footage of the airport interview with Liam but couldn't find it, so maybe it never happened, though I do remember it fairly well (Mandela Effect?). Anyway, thanks for the video. Great fun, as usual. 👍

I honestly didn't know that this rivalry was much longer-lasting and spiteful than the comparably short feud with Blur, but it seems logical that it was based on Liam and Robbie having a go at each other due to their relationship with Nicole, and Noel happily joining in. Jealousy is a powerful feeling that brings out the worst behaviour in us. Amplify that with lots of cocaine, fame, money, ego and tabloid media frenzy and you've got an explosion coming.
@clark82
@clark82 10 ай бұрын
The Blur thing was mostly for the media.... as Bonehead has said in interviews since, they would regularly meet in the pub for a pint, while the front of the newspapers talked about how they can not be left alone in a room without a fight breaking out.... I think after that feud had fizzled out in 1997, Robbie was the next "target" for them as his star was on the rise, and (arguably) between 1999 and 2002, a Robbie Williams album was probably more hotly anticipated than a Oasis album was (the feud pretty much died out after Oasis had got back on their feet, and Robbie's career started to flounder after Escapology).... I think major difference between Robbie and Blur was that he actually played the game just as much as Oasis did (for all the Oasis v Blur rivalry, it was always pretty one way with Blur never really bringing themselves down to that level).

For a band whose audience were aimed at teenage girls Take That weren't bad. Gary Barlow played piano and wrote their songs. And those songs had actual words. I'm not a fan of them but they were geniuses compared to the rubbish that's in the charts right now. Now it takes about 20 songwriters to come up with a load of crap with the same few words repeated over and over for three minutes.

When take that split up, Robbie was not even the one that everyone thought would have a career...... most the media had made their mind up that Gary Barlow had the talent that he would get by, and Mark Owen was the one that everyone thought would be the dark horse who would go on to have the best solo career...yet both have hardly done anything as solo artists, and Robbie went from strength to strength. Also, Liam for his albums relies on a team of 4 or 5 song writers to help him (Liam relies very heavily on Greg Kurstin and Andrew Wyatt as his song writing partners)

I don't think anything can really describe what it was like to see Take That fever at its height in real time, and of course Oasis mania and how huge the Prodigy got... Magic time to be alive. A sister of a friend on my road was a bit older and was obsessed with Take That. I think the problem Robbie has always had is that Oasis were organic and true to themselves from day one, becoming massively popular and influential in the process. He was from Take That, a manufactured boy band who targeted their music at teenage girls. Fake, in music terms. It brought him money and fame, but was never going to be accepted by musical purists, let alone influence the musical world any more than a rain drop in an ocean. When he realised he was never going to be truly accepted musically, he fell back on what he knew - a cheeky-chappy showman act producing pop dross, still aimed at teenage girls. That's why his comments at 20:08 are so telling; despite overhauling Oasis in the number of people buying his records or turning up at his shows, he was still no closer to being accepted as a bona fide musician in the same league as Oasis, and that really hurt him. Love them or hate them, Oasis will go down as one of Britain's biggest, most influential bands, the voice of a generation despite breaking up years ago. When Williams hangs up the mic - whenever it is - he'll just be replaced by another manufactured, family-friendly pop star and largely forgotten within a few years. Great video, btw.

@@startracker5895 I love Oasis a lot more than the Robster and their digs at him were pretty funny to me but yeah they got fed up of him hanging around so went indifferent then got jealous that he was becoming successful (probably more so with them having given him more credibility in the indie / Brit pop arena , contacts ie Owen Morris , Tim abbot, music reporters like Paul marthur etc ) as they were dimming a bit and massively laid into him publicly for his weight issues etc. On top of that Liam was now dating his ex that aborted his (Robbie’s) child. Liam instigated the fight before the Brit awards by saying that he would break Robbie’s nose following the wreath he sent to the sun. I would assume the reason Robbie said he wanted to shag Liam is because when asked why he doesn’t like him etc his only reason is for the Nicole thing and them berating him. Liam is seen as much more as an alpha male than Robbie who is aware that a lot of people think he is gay so it’s like people like Liam wanna mock me for being seemingly gay it’s more funny right now to not defend that but say I wanna have sex with him. Robbie always loved oasis and Liam and you can tell really he just wanted to be accepted by them again. If he was accepted by them he knows he would also be discredited less by the public / oasis fans who copied their insults , particularly the ‘fat dancer’ which has stuck for years. When Liam threatened to break his nose I think Robbie just thought well I know if I put you up for a televised fight I know you’ll publicly admit that that’s not gonna happen and if we do fight I’m gonna properly train and likely kick your arse. It’s also an opportunity to get in the papers and get lots of attention , which of course they did. I think they all had a love/ hate relationship with the press and that was him loving some attention whoring along the way.

Mad though it sounds now, I got on a smallish plane to Nice for a holiday in 1995 and as I walked down the central isle, to my left was a bleach-blond Robbie Williams and to my left was Paula Yates and a sunglasses-wearing Mick Hutchence. I was with my sister and a couple of friends and, being a smart-ass 24 year-old, I muttered as I passed them, "there's a lot of famous assholes on this plane. I hope we don't crash. We'd all be really sad in the cheap seats." And Robbie Williams laughed, which I thought was very cool (of him). I knew who he was, of course, but now I liked him. I saw Hutchence in the otherwise deserted Nice airport an hour later and he was off his tits. Never saw any of them again - why would I? Three years later I was bombing around Tuscany (in a Volvo - sweet ride ;) listening to "Millennium" by Robbie Williams - a lot. I wasn't so much his "fan", but a lifelong supporter. Still am. And that was a great holiday ;)

A point to make about Robbie 3 nights at knebworth. 2.5 million people applied for oasis at knebworth so the comparison isn’t really valid. The summer before Robbie played knebworth oasis had played 3 nights at Finsbury Park so they were still selling tickets. I would think Robbie was bigger world wide especially in Europe and Australia. But oasis would of been bigger in Japan and the states. Both could really of sold out anywhere in the uk. All Robbie relevant hits were written by guy chambers anyway and when he fell out with guy came rudebox.

I remember this, and it's also in the Wikipedia article: "The Irish singer-songwriter Ray Heffernan asserts that he wrote the first version of "Angels" in Paris in 1996, after his partner had a miscarriage. According to Heffernan, he met Williams in a pub by chance in Dublin. He showed him an incomplete version of the song, and that week the two recorded a studio demo. Williams confirmed that he had recorded a demo with Heffernan but said he rewrote the song significantly with Chambers. Before the song's release, Heffernan accepted an offer from Williams's management to buy the rights for £7,500. He is thanked in the UK CD2 single liner notes."

Robbie Williams started out writing the verses, some of which was taken from a poem his sister wrote. Then while visting Ireland he befriended a guy in a pub. They both ended up drunk & back at this guys place where he played Robbie some songs he'd been working on. Once Robbie found out he was a song writer Robbie shared with him his idea for "Angels" & booked a local studio where they could both work on it. They were both drunk in the studio too & the song didn't progress any further than what was already there. Robbie Williams then went back to his home town of Stoke where this Irish guy showed up out of the blue one day, looking for him. Robbie sent him on his way & that was the last he thought he'd hear from him. Robbie Williams would then go on to meet writing partner Guy Chambers. They both worked on "Angels" & as Guy was playing through it Robbie spontaneously came up with the chorus on the spot & apparently the rest of song kind of wrote itself. Then later, after the song was released, the Irish guy resurfaced claiming he played a part in writing it. His only proof was a copy of what he recorded with Robbie in Ireland which included the unfinshed song with the yet unwritten choruses. Because it was his word against Robbie Williams word they settled out of court. The above was told from the horses mouth on The True Geordie podcast. Robbie Williams and the Gallagher brothers are now all in their 50s and I believe now that time is a healer. Like Noel & Liam have kind of like ended their 15 year feud for these array of Oasis reunion stadium greatest hits gigs next year, though how annoying he can be, maybe it's time to hold a permanent olive branch out to Robbie. Both sides older and wiser and globally sold the same around of records at 75m. In retrospect, their career trajectories, personal or love lives as well as relationship with their offsprings are very similar and all of them are as stubborn as each other. Time to reunite and MAYBE work with each other in some ways. You only live once!!!
