Jon's death became so unimportant that I don't think it was mentioned once in season 8. Even though there was a whole storyline of Dany finding out about it. When they first meet, Davos says that Jon "took a knife in the heart for his people". Dany is intrigued by this, and asks Tyrion what it could have meant. Tyrion thinks it was just a metaphor. Dany is still intrigued, so she asks Jon about it after she comes back from the battle with the Lannisters. Jon gives an evasive answer. And finally, when Jon returns from the wight hunt and Dany sees him without clothes, she notices the huge scars on his chest and realizes that what Davos said was literally true. And then - she never asks Jon again about it. She discovers that a man she knows came back from the dead, and she kind of forgets about it. You'd think they were going somewhere with this. You'd think maybe Jon's death will have some consequence, some meaning, beyond providing him a free pass from the Night's Watch. No. Nothing.

Remember Benjin? Bran and Meera never mentioned him to anyone at the Night's Watch, and then Jon clearly freaks out after seeing Benjin, but never brings him up later. Also, seeing wounds on a person's chest is not proof, we never actually hear her say anything that suggests she knows it's real, that he really did come back from the dead. And Jon? He clearly didnt want Davos to mention that bit, otherwise he never would've looked at him like "Dude, stop". Besides, there was lil point to bringing it up later. So Jon was killed an brought back. He could still be killed, otherwise he wouldn't have needed to assemble some army to fight the Boltons. And there was no consequence just as there was no consequence for that guy that got brought back nearly a dozen times, compared to him, Jon is a newbie in terms of "brought back to life". In truth, the whole "Gandalf should've stayed dead" makes GRR Martin a hypocrite cause that other character was brought back in the season that D&D didnt write, that was all Martin. If death is final, then why does some rando get to come back several or more times?

One thing that annoyed me about how Jon's story was handled was that he has left the Night's Watch and no characters EVER point this out. It pisses me off because leaving the Night's Watch should be a HUGE deal - it's a breaking of his vows, he's considered a deserter, and yes, he dies, but NOBODY OUTSIDE OF THE ROOM HE WAS RESURRECTED IN KNOWS THIS. Plus, he wasn't just some random guy. He was the Bastard of Winterfell, who rose to become Lord of the Night's Watch. All the highborn of Westoros should know about that but it's never addressed properly. It should have been a similar case as Jaime being the Kingslayer. They probably would have called him the Wildling Deserter or something. I'm not even saying he should be rounded up and executed, because by the time he leaves The Night's Watch, he's got an army of Wildlings behind him. To the people of Westoros, he should be an evil turncloak and deserter who abandoned the Night's Watch and lead an army of Wildlings passed the wall and into the North. From there, he takes Winterfell with a Wildling force. Can you imagine how easy it would be for his enemies to spin this story as him being the ultimate traitor? There could have been all sorts of problems brought out from this where Jon gets a reputation not unlike the "Demon Monkey who killed his king and murdered his father". They could have tried to do some damage limitation but the political upheaval of Jons actions should have caused some serious shit to go down.
@spookshow3 жыл бұрын
One of the MAJOR problems in the show from season 6 onwards is everyone is so fucking credulous. Nothing is ever questioned or examined. Someone finds out Jon came back from the dead and they're never like "so you're a walking corpse, what's the deal with that?". All this shit about Jon leaving the Watch is never ever questioned. And every fucking thing Bran says is just accepted as gospel. Who the fuck cares if he can see everything - why would that mean you have to believe him about, say, Jon's parentage? Is he incapable of lying? No one's going to bring up the bag of FACES Arya keeps under her bed? The entire male line of Freys is wiped out - who did that? Who cares I guess! God I'm still so mad about this shitty show.

He should’ve been revived as an ice wight; it’s a huge shift in the status quo that makes sense, pushes the noble Jon down a darker path, and makes the audience question if Jon is still in control of his own body, which could be a whole thing on its own. But alas. What we got was a haircut and Jon losing any semblance of personality.

I now imagined for a moment Stannis replacing Jon in the last three seasons and it's crazy how much better the show becomes suddenly. Stannis died wrecked by guilt for killing his own daughter, and his resurrected self is now characterized by that guilt and self-loathing. Recognizing how his insistence he should be king destroyed everything he really cared for, he now wants nothing to do anymore with his duty he once held sacred. Imagine how impactful it would be if Stannis, of all people, said "I don't want it," when other people suggest he would be king. In Jon's case, it was just some random nonsense, we didn't even know why he "didn't want it." But for Stannis, this simple sentence would have major implications for his entire character. Davos and Melisandre would now have to work together to convince Stannis to be the resurrected hero they believed he was supposed to be, even though Stannis doesn't want to even be king anymore. At a later stage, Davos would discover that the king he loved so much that he got him brought back from the dead, actually killed the child Davos loved as a daughter, which would be a major character moment for Davos. Also, the impact of Jon's death wouldn't be lessened by his resurrection, while the audience would now have to accept that the main hero leading against the white walkers is someone they saw burning his own daughter alive.

OMG- imagine if instead of nothing, they had Jon deal with people thinking he's some kind of Jesus, and that's what make Dany freak out about him, instead of "he's an inspiring person and people like him more" or whatever thing they actually did. Like, maybe he could abscond with a dragon, and she realizes she's not the specialist special. Imagine if Bloodraven was actually Bloodraven from the books, ie more than a little evil. Imagine.

It's funny you mention drama. To paraphrase David Mamet: "'Information' is not 'drama.' 'Drama' is not two characters sitting in a room talking about a third. Drama is what happens when when a character with acute goals encounters obstacles in the way of achieving said goals." From season 6 onward, characters begin to lose acute goals in favor of blurry aspirations. Others become a vehicle for information and are guided by their characterization, which they spout out to anyone that listens (Cersei: "I love my children and being bad feels good so I'll do this") or is spouted by other characters (Tyrion: "Cersei loves her children so she'll do this").

Something that occurred to me only while watching this video is that basically all that Jon dying & being brought back does is let him leave the Night's Watch honorably. Because he served til he died, which was his oath. Then he was brought back, and he's like "Peace out! I'm done!"
@NineBreakerUIXB3 жыл бұрын
That's how I viewed it too, his death and resurrection served only two purposes. 1: "omg Jon died! :O" 2: Jon leaves castle black. They literally had a medieval combat jesus character and couldn't think of any way to build upon it....christ
@duncanlutz36983 жыл бұрын
Which is honestly bullshit. People would just tell him "well you died and your watch ended... but now your back and so is your Oath." Many just accept that Jon dying frees him from the Oath because "It shall not end until my death." Jon died: his watch ends. But the oath also says " I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come." Jon has life again, and thus, Jon must serve again. Instead of arguing that resurrection frees him, it could just as easily be argued that the Oath holds so long as Jon draws breath. If Jon is resurrected and lives to see another night, then he better be spending that new night on the Wall. Basically, instead of being a loophole, death can be argued as only a suspension from his duty. And even if this loophole is accepted in this world, Jon would first have to convince everyone that he did in fact die, for realsies dead, but he "got better." So why doesn't Ramsay constantly rant about how Jon is a deserter and Oathbreaker? Even if the people accept that Jon's death frees him, why aren't Jon's enemies trying to deny his resurrection and pin him as a criminal in need of a good execution? Why isn't Jon showing off his scar and screaming at the Umbers or whoever that he left the Watch "honorably?" Why does no one mention this again!? FFS one of the first scenes in this entire show is Ned executing a Watch deserter: this is a big deal. And yet Jon doesn't have to convince a single soul that his Jesus trick let's him off the hook. But at the end of the day, Westeros doesn't strike me as a society that takes strict legalese seriously enough to accept ambiguous loopholes. It's a very much "might makes right" society as seen when Cersei just straight up yeets Bobby B's last decree and throws Ned in the dungeon. Not one single soul in that room spoke out against Cersei violating the dead King's last command. And that includes Barristan Selmy, a living legend upheld as a perfect knight. Nothing about Jon's resurrection makes any sense in the show!
@NineBreakerUIXB3 жыл бұрын
@@duncanlutz3698 Aye, it's a plot hole that's seldom spoken about, I think because the show glosses over it so fast that their attempt to conceal their bad writing actually worked for once lol. But it's ridiculous all the same since there are so many cool ways the death and resurrection could have been utilised in the future and Jon being branded a traitor would've been a cool story that doesn't even require him to die and come back to life. Just off the top of my head, here's how it could've been done without him dying, seeing as this serves absolutely no narrative purpose going forward, let's just take it out and add some things that will. Thorny Al and his men still attempt to kill Jon, but rather than just standing there and taking it like a doofus he fights back, kills one or two red shirts and escapes the castle wounded, eventually being picked up by the nearby wildling camp in the next season so that we still get a cliffhanger of him dying in the snow. Now he is an outcast just like his wildling friends which aids him in gaining their assistance for the Battle of The Bastards later. Meanwhile, Thornmail Al seizes control of Castle Black due to being the runner up in the election and tells the Watch that Jon has betrayed his vow because he loves the freefolk so much, some buy it, some don't but all go along with the new regime due to not really having a say in the matter, or any evidence to the contrary. This sets up a descension in the ranks angle and an overthrowing of Thorne that only occurs when Sanza arrives at Castle Black looking for Jon and her and Big Brei T are told they're not allowed to leave until Jon is brought to justice, he does this with the belief that he can use her to apprehend Jon and keep his treachery a secret. This happens later than it did in the show because in my version Sanza and Brienne don't have a jet pack they can share. It also gives time for Jon to recover from his wounds and Thorne time to send word to the rest of the realm that Jon is a rogue, this aids Ramsey in convincing the other houses to fight with him against Jon as well as Cersei a means to discredit him later. The wildlings are pissed about the betrayal because now they're going to be hunted anyway and Jon wants to free his sister but as they're about to launch their attack civil war breaks out amongst the watch between those loyal to Alliser and Snow, with T Brei and the smartest girl in the world caught in the middle. The crystallised water loyalists manage to open the gate for Jon and prickly flower stem is brought to justice, with the rest of Westeros left to make up their own mind about what happened. Now Jon is already branded a deserter but The Watch aren't going to punish him for leaving to pursue the man who raped and tortured his sister and is currently living in his home. It's by no means perfect but I think it's better than what we got and has a lot more set up and pay off.

Arthur spins his swords around like a flashy buffoon which no swordsman would ever do. 6. Arthur Dane makes all these mistakes and yet is the greatest swords man in GoT. 7. Dane is stabbed through his plate armour.

The Tower of Joy scene miffed me for three reasons: 1. No Oswell Whent. As badass as Ser Arthur Dayne was, even he would balk at the prospect of having to fight five skilled Northern warriors at the same time. There were six at the tower, Lord Commander Hightower kills one before being dispatched by Ned, and then Arthur Dayne proceeds to kill FOUR!? There’s a reason there were three knights at the Tower in the book: The odds aren’t as massively lopsided! 2. Ned wasn’t using Ice, which I do believe was the case in the book. The reason why is that Ned using a Valyrian Steel greatsword against a Starmetal greatsword was the one reason he wasn’t outright killed by Dayne in the books. The Dawn’s unique metal is one reason the Sword of the Morning is so feared: Because it can effortlessly destroy lesser blades and defenses used against it(the only exception being, of course, Valyrian Steel). 3. Dayne is depicted as “far better” than Ned. This may have been the case in the books, but we see Ned go toe-to-toe with an in-his-prime JAIME LANNISTER in season 1 and match him blow-for-blow. According to the screenwriter for that scene, in fact, Ned would have WON if not for the guard’s intervention incapacitating Ned. Even if we assume that wasn’t the case, Ned, who at that point was a great deal older than when he fought Dayne, was an equal match for the fucking KINGSLAYER, who was the best swordsman of his generation. Yet somehow, an in-his-prime Ned Stark(who, again, was able to match the best swordsman of the time while being considerably older) is far outclassed by Ser Arthur Dayne, which is a massive inconsistency. At the very least, the scene should have shown Ned get in some good hits against Dayne or possibly disarm Ser Arthur of his offhand sword, forcing him to just use Dawn for the rest of the fight, before being disarmed himself and barely beaten by Dayne. Then, at least, the show would have remained consistent with how it portrays Ned as a “superior specimen to his brother.”

What I find funny about that complaint is that humans *not* coming back to life is a really big deal in Tolkien's world. Gandalf's resurrection just shows that he wasn't human. Of course someone reading the book for the first time wouldn't necessarily know that, but still. I think it does a pretty good job establishing that this couldn't happen for just anyone.
@ibrahimtall62094 ай бұрын

The whole "nothing after death" bit has always struck me as weird. If there is legitimately nothing after death, then Jon shouldn't remember anything, it should just be like he went to sleep and then woke up again. I think a lot of the cheers for Olly's death are not about the tragic death of a tragic boy, but because Olly was a symbol of stuff that was bad in the show. They naively thought his death meant a return to quality. Olly was the overuse of emoting reaction shots. Olly was the deliberate changing of iconic lines just to piss off book fans. Olly was never a boy traumatized by his parents death, betrayed by his new parental figure, and lead to do something drastic by authority figures that he hadn't done previously despite both motive and opportunity to do it. You can argue that Olly's execution was the Stoneheart-esque mercilessness of fire wight Jon if you really steelman it. But it's obviously not the case. Oh, and the poor young actor who's career would be tainted by this bad role didn't speak this season so they could pay him the acting equivalent of minimum wage, IIRC. Rickon similarly.
