Ashley Burbank yes it’s a 3 year degree here. There’s various nursing degrees, midwifery is one of them. If you want to be a midwife AND a nurse it’s 2 separate degrees. Most mothers are cared for, and babies delivered by midwives here (a couple consultant doctor appointments) unless your are deemed high risk or having a c-section then you get a doctor. But there is always a doctor or two available in the maternity hospital if needed.

I had had a positive pregnancy test, was having all the symptoms (nausea, and all that jazz) went for a checkup and they did more bloodwork (I guess that was just routine) I was told that the results said that not only was I NOT pregnant, but could not have been pregnant recently (I was at 14 weeks) They suggested 3 possibilities: It was a blighted ovum, the pregnancy was ectopic, I had experienced a hysterical pregnancy. They sent me for an ultrasound to figure out which. What we saw was a perfectly normal fetus sucking his thumb and doing summersaults. My "Blighted Ovum" will be 34 this summer.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MENTIONING THE HOOK EFFECT. Please, please, PLEASE bring this up again in a longer video in the future. I didn't find out I was pregnant until I was 17.5 weeks as a result of the Hook effect (both urine AND blood tests) when I finally got an ultrasound and confirmed the HUGE fetus hanging out in my uterus. My doctor was stunned and couldn't understand how it happened. It's crazy how little this phenomenon is discussed in the medical field, because apparently it happens a LOT more than we think and gets chalked up to an error in the lab. TEN NEGATIVE TESTS IS NOT A LAB ERROR. I didn't even have a NAME for what happened to me until last year when I saw this video for the first time. During my second pregnancy, however? Picked it up right away on all the tests, and I knew from the jump. Bizarre how different two pregnancies can be... Thanks again for bringing it up MDJ!

hi! sorry your comment is old but I have a question. I'm searching for this effect on the web and there isn't a lot of precise info for this. Your pregnancy was quite normal appart from those failed tests? Did you do the first test early on in your pregnancy? I'm trying to get pregnant, but I've always had irregular cycles before the pill and stopped the pill less than a year ago. So I know periods can be even more irregular... Long story short, did two tests (negative) 10 days appart and now I'm wondering if I should get to my ObGYN (but he is far from my home so I'd rather not go if not necessary), my general practitioner, or get yet again another test :/

I used probably 10-12 home pregnancy tests, all were "I dunno" - no specific lines, if it was to be blue lines, mine showed a purple smudge.. I KNEW I was pregnant, I started spotting and went to the ER, where I was dismissed (just another urine test), finally over a weekend, I had to know, I'd had a miscarriage before and no other children, I was 36.. I called my OB/GYN office on a Sat. morning, and got a Dr. I had never seen, but God Bless Her! She called the hospital and ordered blood work, I went and they said to call them in an hour, the tech taking the blood knew how badly I wanted this pregnancy... When I called in an hour, they put me on hold for - ever, but the speaker phone at the hospital came on and the people in the lab were all cheering and congratulating :) It was an incredibly difficult pregnancy, but my daughter was born ON her due date weighing 6lb 8 oz.. She is 27 now and I am certain she still hangs the stars and the moon, my baby blessing, I still thank God many many times a day, and send her a quick "I love you, I am so proud of you" text everyday... She was an honor student with a very difficult major, but she did it, and now last night told me she is getting married... Miracles do happen, she proved it.

I took a pregnancy test came out negative, had what I thought was a period. I was feeling pregnancy symptoms for the next couple of weeks. Took another pregnancy test, came back positive. I was pregnant. Then my “period” came again. I thought I’d miscarried. Freaked out, I’ve had a miscarriage before. Went to the hospital cause my blood type is A- and I need a Rhogam shot. They did an ultrasound, they found the baby was 8 weeks. They saw a heartbeat. It was strong. She was born super healthy and is now 9yrs old. She’s my miracle baby.

Congratulations on your baby! So sorry you had to go through miscarriages. I’m A- too Got Rhogham for bleeding early and having a SCH but told the OB doctor first appointment I wanted the fetal rhesus testing. There’s 2 companies I found in the USA that offer it. But the doctors office needs to order the kit. They do testing pretty standard overseas to reduce the risk of exposure for the mother to viruses. Ireland had tens of thousands of mothers exposed to hepatitis before they knew about hepatitis. Billion to One unity NIPT screening , out of California testing after 10weeks devyser - NIPT fetal rhesus screening, out of Rowell GA testing after 10weeks I believe Of course we can only make the decisions with the info we have, and I didn’t have the test done before I had bleeding. The ER doctor said I’m in 10-30% risk of miscarriage, so praying everything resolves. Hope this helps in the future. I plan on still getting the test done so I know if I need any more or not.

Wow! This seems to be more common than we think. I didn't find out I was pregnant with my daughter until I scheduled a ultrasound. I was convinced I had another cyst on my ovary or something. I really thought I was pregnant until I kept failing DOZENS of home pregnancy tests over 2 weeks past my missed period & my OB ran all kinds of tests - all came back normal... except my prolactin levels were higher than normal.... during that ultrasound, I found out I was almost 7 weeks pregnant! 😊 That explained my high prolactin, but not all my negative pregnancy tests! Testing positive late or not at all on home pregnancy tests seems to be alot more common than we think! I hear stories all the time now since I had my daughter!

My mom says the Doctor turned around so fast his glasses almost fell off his nose. Him and 4 or 5 nurses just started massaging her stomach. This happened again with my brother 7 years later. Two days later I spiked a fever and was back in the E.R. for an infection in my uterus. A few tests later, I found out I was still pregnant. I can not find anyone else that has experienced this. EDIT: My daughter was NOT a twin. I did not lose a baby. The lab tested what was removed from me and there was no fetal tissue present.

Yep I've had this. I lost a baby at 9 weeks and had all the tests and was told the hormones were lowering so I had definitely miscarried. 4weeks later I still felt pregnant but the gp assumed it was psychological. They redid bloods to be sure and it stated I was pregnant. They re scanned me but the baby was tiny compared to it's now what should have been 13 week size. So we were told to prepare ourselves as with the baby now very small and the previous hormone changes we could lose it. 4 weeks later we went for another scan and the baby was now the size of a 12 week baby and had grown 4 weeks worth in 4 weeks. A specialist was called in and it was confirmed the baby on the scan was not the same baby from my supposed miscarriage as the dates and babies size and weight gain didnt match. I had been pregnant with 2 babies conceived 2 months running and the second baby had managed to survive the miscarriage of the first baby. The second baby is now 11 years old.

As a medical laboratory technologist, one of the possibilities for getting a false negative serum test for bHCG is taking too much biotin. The amount in a normal multivitamin doesn't interfere much but if you take extra biotin it can cause your bHCG number to be falsely lowered. Edit: hook effect on a serum test is extremely rare. Our assay goes up to 1 million IU/L and the average pregnancy maxes out around 100,000.
@TheEmmakathryn5 жыл бұрын
Would the hook effect be more likely in a qualitative serum test? Or with older lab techniques? Also hcg can drop after 8weeks or so? (Although unlikely to drop below 25 so... I dunno) this has always fascinated me!
@hedgers20055 жыл бұрын
@@TheEmmakathryn I'm not sure about qualitative serum testing, I've never worked with it. I would expect that it would be more likely as the testing concept would be similar to qualitative urine testing and therefore have similar limitations. HCG levels do drop starting around week 10-12 but they tend to stabilize well above 4000 and can stay as high as 100,000 for the remainder of the pregnancy, so they should be detectable at any point. I say should, human bodies are weird and do crazy stuff we've never seen before.

That could be it. Biotin is in a lot of supplements for dieting for women (not for men, for some odd reason). Even more commercial fitness brands like Prozis have gone crazy with marketing Biotin as a diet supplement for "better energy metabolism" and "more healthy nervous system", plus the whole healthy nails and hair thing, with 5000-6000mcg per day. Considering also normal diet foods, such as eggs, spinach and cauliflower, which also have high amounts of biotin... Would this be enough to interfere with the test?
@hedgers20055 жыл бұрын
@@sorayaimperial it would be enough to interfere if you are taking more than 1 mg per day. The degree of impact on results depends on how much exactly you're taking but it still shouldn't be enough to mask a mid-pregnancy HCG result completely. It definitely could mask an early pregnancy result though. Biotin interferes with a lot of immunoassay tests as it can be a part of the reaction itself. Troponin results can appear decreased as well if you take too much, and that's what tells a doctor if you're having a heart attack 😬

@roxystarlite41065 жыл бұрын
I'm the complete opposite lol.....I knew a week early that I was pregnant all 3 times. My uterus produces mass amounts of HcG so there was always a faint line 5 to 6 days before my period was going to start. The first one was an accident but intuitively I knew I was preg. The 2nd was planned so o tested a lot anyway and the 3rd was like the 1st, once you've been preggo you kinda know what it feels like you for you.
@glaciemdraco5 жыл бұрын
Weird, isn't it usually that 3 weeks have to pass so the test would have a chance of being positive? Or did I get that wrong? Either way, it just shows how every woman's body is different (gotta love genetics). I guess you have to trust your gut at times, too.
@roxystarlite41065 жыл бұрын

EMT here, we move patients from the stretcher to a bed with the sheets all the time. The stretcher is usually much closer to the bed than that and there are people on either side helpping but we dont get anything extra to help unless they’re already on a board of something like that
@MsMorganThorne5 жыл бұрын
I've been retired (paramedic) for about 12 years now, but we always did sheet transfers. Usually, it was one person on each side of the bed/stretcher, so you can take the weight at the chest and hip, sometimes with a third person bringing the feet over. We might add a transfer board if the patient was especially heavy, but it's totally normal.
