Not that Trevor will read this, but I wish he would have taken the time to listen to Michelle's words after the unveiling of her painting. So nice to have her eloquence back in the White House, even as a guest. She spoke of the meaning and importance of the portraits and what it meant to her. As always, she made me proud to have had her as our First Lady for 8 years.

Once it was unveiled, that was EXACTLY the interpretation I had: in a country where Whites have always held a majority, there soon came a non-White person who stood out and became their leader. It also offers some insight into the person as well: nothing in the background but plain ol' white to symbolize humbleness, simplicity, and purity. This was a president who came from a non-opulent background and throughout his career never succumbed to the riches of the offices he held. He could have continued serving as Senator in perpetuity; he could have finished his 8 years and still been looking to remain influential in politics (as Trump has been doing), yet he chose a life in retirement as he was entitled to. He was never corrupted by power, never felt entitled to any office he's ever been elected to, and even with money, he still lives a modest lifestyle without the need to brag about it. This painting captures the essence of the man Barack Obama was, is, and will be.

Hmm. Interesting way to look at it. I guess while the background symbolizes him at the beginning of the Presidency, then his hyper-realistic, aged, and solemn foreground would symbolize him at the end or after his Presidency. Barack Hussein Obama, as President came in during times of uncertainty and hope. Then he spent 8 years of his life giving up his vitality in exchange for a different forward-thinking nation.

President Obama’s portrait is reflective and shows the many aspects of his eight years in office. The stress and strain of being the first black President and the vile things that were done, written and said about him, including the ugliness, disrespect of the Republicans and the vow to not allow him to accomplish nothing while in office. Who could smile with all those thoughts running through his mind. I’m glad they made it out alive.

Michelle's portrait exudes the fact that she is an intelligent, independent woman of substance, and at home with her sensuality; she *knows* who she is, and is in touch with all aspects of what makes her so attractive. Her sense of humour is also there in the mix. I was startled by Barack's portrait, but one day later, I realise that the stark background emphasises what an extraordinary and unusual human being he is; it makes him stand out, as it should. I also liked the portrayal of him as a "no frills, no fuss" guy. What you see is what you get. Perfect.

If you listen to Obama, he explains why he chose his artist. He wanted his portrait to be real because he didn’t want an airbrushed, romanticized painting of him as POTUS. But, I do think some kind of shading in the background would be nice. But again, his portrait will be impactful stuck between George W & Trump. So in that regard I take his point, and he will be the honest and real POTUS sticking out against two dangerous presidents. Michelle’s is gorgeous and I love she is showing her arms! I was struck by how it was a bucking of convention, a nice dark background to blend in with previous portraits... then I realized, HE would blend in with a dark back ground, which the white guys stand out from, so itn a way, this is going to match in that the figure stands out. But it's also a mark of progress, used to be you avoided too much white in a painting because the natural varnish used to protect paintings would yellow within a few years and it'd look dingy, but with technological advances that's no longer an issue.

The portraits of POTUS & FLOTUS Obama are exquisite. I love that side smile on Miss Michelle's face. Every time she threw one of those smiles it was code for OH PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! I love it- Ha, Ha.
@maargenbx1454
@maargenbx1454 Жыл бұрын
Obama’s portrait is incredible to me. One thing I realized early on when Obama was a Presidential candidate was that so many members of the general public really didn’t know much about him but spoke as if they did. I realized that so many people projected their own hopes, fears, anger, and biases onto him and interpreted their own projections as his character. This worried me for his sake. While I knew his opponents and enemies on the Right would never correct the misperceptions they spread about him, my concern was that when his supporters on the Left had their idealistic perceptions confronted by the challenges of an actual administration in real life and real time, they’d be disappointed that this guy couldn’t address every problem, would make mistakes, and couldn’t transform this country into an ideal version of what we could be. I was afraid that when they realized this his supporters would turn on him, not because he wasn’t doing an adequate job as POTUS, but because he couldn’t meet their unrealistic expectations. What I like about this portrait is that it doesn’t put Obama in any context. Like the man himself, everything about him other than his figure is to be interpreted by whatever projection is provided by the viewer - there’s nothing to contradict their perspective on him. Obama is the perfect Everyman - even his mixed ethnicity makes him someone that anyone can see themselves - or their enemies - reflected in. This portrait also presents a figure that the viewers have to put into context for themselves. If any of this reads as criticism of Obama, the artist, or the portrait, it’s really not. I voted for Obama, I was satisfied with his job as POTUS and Michelle’s handling of her role as First Lady. As he’s a politician I expect that like all public figures they present to the public exactly what they want the public to see, I have zero idea to what extent that matches or contradicts their private reality. What’s fascinated me more since the Obamas entered public life is the public’s reaction to them. I get the impression that this portrait of Obama, more than any other Presidential portrait, was designed less to be about Obama than about the viewer’s reaction to the portrait. If that’s the case I think that’s absolutely brilliant.

@Susan Van Dunk ... Racial Colour-blindness is a dismissive and hurtful microaggression that causes more psychological harm than overt acts of racism. It is ambiguous, often unintentional, and attacks a person’s mental well-being by rejecting the biggest part of their identity. By placing Pres. Obama in an all-white space, the artist is asking you to recognize this, and the silent trauma experienced by any Black man, of any status, as he stands at the center of an all-white space. This is not the artist asking you to be colour-blind by any means, it is the complete and utter opposite. It is a celebration of experiences with an acknowledgment that our history is not so ancient and we still have a long way to go.

So what I’m hearing, is as a person living in the south in a state with severe laws against abortion of any kind, is to never buy the new Apple Watch. I don’t trust that my state government wouldn’t subpoena Apple for that information if they suspect that a woman has gotten an abortion. Like what were they thinking? What you name your son just might determine his future. Back in the early 1970's I lived in Illinois. There was a DJ, that was given his Mother's maiden name for his middle name. His middle name became a huge hook for his profession. He became one of the most famous DJ's in Chicago Radio history, and was even enshrined in the Radio DJ Hall of Fame. His name is John Records Landecker. His saying, or hook he used at the time was "I am John Landecker, and Records truely is my middle name". This became so popular that he even wrote a book called "Records Truely is my Middle Name". That wouldn't work in today's Radio because they don't use records anymore, I guess timing is apparently everything.

Once photography became a thing, people started using portrait paintings as a way to portray more subjective things/perceptions of subjects rather than the more "objective/realistic" way photography did. When representing something with photography alone, you're limited to mostly costuming/styling, composition, lighting, and props.

So the apple watch can detect your fertility cycle, any variation to your cycle, and your location. Including whether you move closer to an abortion clinic. Hmmm. Perhaps if you are a woman of child bearing age you should just stick with Timex watches for now.

Not that I don't appreciate pondering what if white House paintings were alive, but compared to the gravity of the implications of normalizing fertility trackers? USE THE LIMITED TIME BETTER BUDDIES

Exactly, cops have already paid for our data, so apple watch tracking fertility information is just a deeper way for them to monitor us and keep reproducing people (women, transmen and nonbinary people) under control like a ward of the state. Extremists aka Republicans will do everything they can to keep us from leaving the state to get reproductive care if it means it may lead to an abortion and they've already started in several states since Roe was overturned. This "watch" is a monitor for the government and I also wish Trevor and the team talked about it here, but I hope that Roy Wood Jr. will talk about it in depth in the Behind the Scenes segment.
