Former President Barack Obama spoke at length about the war in Ukraine, telling an audience in Chicago that the conflict is a "bracing reminder for democracies that had gotten flabby and confused and feckless around the stakes of things that we tended to take for granted," including the United States. Obama also addressed his recollections of Vladimir Putin and how he isn't sure "that the person I knew is the same as the person who is now leading this charge." #CNN #News

This happens because we think the world is a magical place that gets better without we taking personal responsability. Would YOU do what is necessary to be a president? The problem is we want the world to be great, without us participating in the change. Thats why we tolerate bad leaders - cause it takes personal responsability to participate in solving the problems. We don't want that, so we root for the "good" leaders, thinking that by itself absolves us from facing the sh*show that is our world. Good leaders are normal people like you and me.

He ACTUALLY did mean America and the need to fight for democracy right here, right now. The flabby citizen, that’s America! People only come out at a rate of what … 50, 60 .. maybe 70% on a great turnout. And come out only when they are angry .. voting against someone.. not voting FOR a policy! ‘A republic, if you can keep it.’ .. well, it’s less of a democracy today than it was yesterday

@@rickschroth9869 He meant all first world democracies. He was talking about all the nations but in a global sense. And yes, the democracies did get flabby, they thought they could sit back, rest on their laurels and enjoy the fruits of work done by other generations of people without having to look after it themselves. And he is right. I am aware he did not get everything right as prsident, but show me the leader who always did get everything right, there are none. He is however a deeper thinker than most of the recent presidents and seems to have a longer view than most. His most accurate state,ent here is that there has been a kind of reversion back into the old ways of thinking politically and globally. He is right. Again. And it has come exactly at the time we need to be thinking and acting quite differently.

How did Putin change? When Obama was doing this same fake 💩 in Syria like Joe is doing in Ukraine Putin infact backed Assad and the Syrian govt. Soo this lying Indonesian wanna be black fake Muslim brotherhood speaks sophisticated stoopidity and you follow blindly. Obama loves to project who he really is on to people. After Putin did that he helped trump pass out stimulus checks because the democrats have been decade busy DESTROYING America. If y'all love communism so much why don't you go move where communism reigns supreme oh that's right every communist country still uses capitalism in their favor. History will repeat until you actually learn and do something different y'all are insane. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. Joe is nothing but a carbon copy of Obama. You're not learning you're repeating the same mistakes looking different results. Enjoy

When this man answers a question, you can hear how he is working it out in his mind, drawing on evidence and experiences, and reaching his conclusions. Sometimes he struggles, but as a listener you may then agree or disagree based on his line of thought. For Trump, you hear emotions-if you blur all the words and leave only his rhythm and pitches, you can still know what his answer is. For Biden, you hear only prepared talking points, and you know exactly where he deviates from those points, which will be corrected by some civil servants a few hours later.

I live in Germany and travelled to the US in 2014, and my US relations were all much more worried about the Ukraine situation than I was. I hate to admit it, but we Germans were blind and stupid at the time regarding Russias action in Ukraine. Also I remember being very much focused on Syria and the ISIS situation in 2014, because we had a lot of Syrian refugees to take care of in our town. I guess most Humans can only handly a limited number of crises at a time, and Ukraine was too much for me.

The thing is though that the Americans always warn of things especially when they don’t bear the cost - Germany couldn’t just abandon Russian oil and tank it’s economy while the US would even benefit from that - but remember that the US did not send troops because that price and risk was too high for them The US will always take the hawkish stance and in this case yes Europe was too self interested and weak but that doesn’t make the US right - in fact by 2014 many didn’t trust the US to support a EU stance and when trump came to power exactly that occurred, they didn’t trust the US after they spied on us in 2008 or lied to us in 2003… it’s not so simple then

If something, God forbid, were to happen to Biden, would you want Kamala Harris to take over? Or would you like to change the law and have an election among Democrats (in which, Obama would easily win). Then we could address term limits. Republicans can't beat him. That's why they loathe him. Look at how many of them are commenting on this story, drawn in like insects to a flame.

Eloquent at saying nothing about US complicity in this war, arming of Neo-Nazi battalions that have killed 14,000 Russians (not saying the Russians are innocent), encouraging Ukraine to tear up the Minsk agreement and give Russia the finger... etc. etc. Putin is a thug, we all know that, but I believe any President of a nuclear armed super-power would have responded to NATO aggression in Ukraine in the same way. So Obama is eloquent at saying nothing. I am Kenyan by they way, so no racial or ethnic bias to my brother Obama even though he is full of hot air. That said the world wants a quick negotiated peace agreement in Ukraine.

Years ago when I started noticing the rise of nationalisms in various countries, all I could think about was that nazizm was once a popular world view in many countries, not just Germany. Nobody ever voted for concentration camps or a war that consumed lives of millions. People voted for the feeling of superiority over others that nazizm offered. Just the way our contemporary nationalisms do. Look for what's beneath the words. When someone is telling you that one particular group of people is evil and wants to destroy "you", ask yourself who is "them" and who is "us" - how do you define it? Just by the fact of having been born in one place or another? When you listen to them talking about making America/Britain/France/anything else great again, ask yourself what do you feel? Do you start feeling superior to someone? See the red light flashing like crazy?

They are "still" of that mindset(Republicans vs Democrats) & don't see that they both live in the same country. GOP'ers are in their own reality world. . When Obama first got elected, I thought it was the beginning of a new era of optimism and human dignity around the world. You can see the quote from Thomas Jefferson swirling around in his thoughts, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." He very nearly says the words a few times and certainly drives the same message home, that if democracy and freedom aren't fought for, they will erode.

@daniell1483

@@RobertMJohnson I'm not sure of any such mocking going on (citation needed) but even if Obama had, I don't see what that would change. Europe lacked the will to stand against Russia at the time, the cheap energy imports led to Europeans putting money over ethics so they turned a blind eye. And as much as I support Ukraine, them losing this war wouldn't be any kind of threat to us. We could simply turn a blind eye to this war as Europe did in 2014 and the world would keep on turning. Not that I advocate for such apathy, but it underlines the point that Russia isn't a threat, it is an annoyance to us. The US has always cared about Ukrainian suffering and the threat to Ukraine's democracy, not ours.
