Putin is quite calculating and smart usually, so I'm surprised he made such a stupid move of invading Ukraine and didn't foresee Finland and Sweden joining NATO. He seems to be totally cut off from reality now. Because the Russian military is in an appalling state and is in no way capable of invading and occupying a country the size of Ukraine. And he's in absolutely no position to take on the 21st century military capability of NATO in a proxy war he now finds himself in. He can't even move 1970's tanks across the Ukraine border without them breaking down all over the place and some have parts inside from salvaged from Russian household electrical appliances. It's a major humilation for Russia, showing the world clearly that Russia no longer a great military power and has lost the fierce and respected army it once had. So Russia has resorted to sheer brutality, massive shelling, missile strikes and artillery fire on civillian towns and cities in an effort to either force Ukraine into surrendering, or just to punish Ukraine and degrade the country and prevent its membership to EU and NATO. If I were Putin, I'd be looking for a fast way out of this situation rather than prolonging the pain or dangerously escalating the situation with tactical nuclear use, which I think maybe his only option soon. Some are questioning whether Putin is rational still, and there's also rumours he is terminally ill with leukemia, which may be influencing his decision making into taking huge gambles. Historically, Putin has been motivated by money and enriching himself, but now has more money than he can spend in a lifetime and is nearing the end of his 'career' in his 70's and health failing, he may be drunk with power and looking to leave his mark and some kind of political legacy. He's always been consistent about his desire to re-create the Soviet-era borders of Russian Federation, and to push back at NATO, and has been slowly doing that for 23 years. Often despot dictators that are weakened (and let's face it Russia's economy is in an appalling state, now shrunk to the size of Italy, and a mere fraction of the size of UK's) resort to wars as a way a) detracting from their own failures by rallying patriotic support and presenting Russia as the victim/under attack b) propping up a failing economy through conquest expansion.

Mass atrocities? Back in the real World the UN Security Council did not object to the invasion and after the fall of Saddam it nominated the US and UK as guardians of the country. So the war was legal as determined by the UN pre and post-invasion. A just attempt to stop a dictator (who had killed 2 Million people) from using weapons on its neighbours or Western allies was the objective. It had already used chemical weapons (a weapon of mass destruction) on the Kurdish people. Yes Blair lied about the detailed evidence for WMD but the legal case for the invasion was not based on the dossier but earlier UNSC findings about threats to peace and non-compliance with inspectors. War brings death, but there was already a great deal of death in Iraq and it was an extremely dangerous terrorist State. Saddam used chemical weapons against Iran and also the Kurds, killing and injuring thousands. In the time leading up to the allied invasion, Saddam was acting like he still had a large stockpile of these weapons and that he was producing more -- and several intelligence sources seemed to back this up. Indeed, though you obviously don't know it, there were many chemical weapons actually found by the victorious forces in Iraq -- just not any new ones. All in all, you shouldn't blame Blair for believing what the majority of the world believed; nor should you pretend that he had some secret knowledge that the majority was wrong. He was a man of his time who tried to do what was right when making tough decisions. That's the boring reality. That's all we can hope for from a person.

And have you been on this planet for the last 8 years? Ukraine and Azov Nazis started bombing Donbas in 2014, and have killed about 14,000 people including women and children. Donbas was part of Russia and Communists gave it to Ukraine, and they are Russian speaking Ukrainians who want to protect their language and culture. Ukraine signed the Minsk Agreement to give them those rights. But did not respect the agreement and with Azov started shelling them. You seem to forget that Soviet Union saved Europe in WWII by sacrificing 27 million lives in order to win the war against Nazis. Hitler destroyed six millions n Jews, disabled and gypsies as well. It is obvious that President Putin was not going to let Azov Nazis kill all the Russians in Donbass who in reality are living on their own land. I feel bad for innocent people on both sides who are going through terrible times, but I do not understand all the cheering of Nazis who started this war.

It never surprised me that he was going to use the energy weapon at some point. It was when and if his system was so good then why didn't countries jump at the chance to join? When I heard about the Russian pipe-line for gas to Europe, I was like uh-oh. I knew right away that was a bad idea. I'm so glad the UK isn't locked into near total dependency on Russia for gas, like Germany is. That's a really difficult position to be in now and will be a costly mistake for Germany to open its market up to other energy sources. It will take years and cost a fortune..meanwhile Russia effectively can hold a gun to their heads and raise the price up on gas or cut it off any time.

To this day, lives are lost for insane reasons, and no single victory is written in Ukraine's history. When 1 Russian soldier dies, 5 Ukrainean soldiers die on the battlefield. In the meantime, Russian army has hugely increased in number and power, with far more advanced weaponry compared to Ukraine. Also the ability to monitor the moves of the opponent on the battlefield. European nations begin to protest, refusing to no longer invest money etc. into this proxy war. Why Mr. Blair is a fantasy story teller? Important to remember that it was the parliamentary vote that triggered the war, i.e. a majority of MPs (including Torys) voted for it. Before the voting too place, the senior MPs were shown evidence of exact locations of these alleged weapons by the CIA. With evidence like this there was no doubt it was real. Only a decade later was it revealed that the CIA had DELIBERATELY fabricated this 'evidence'. Blair may have had other interests in triggering the war and de-throning Saddam but the greasing of the wheels was done almost entirely by the Americans. I suppose in a way the U.K. paid a price as well, in that since he left the Labour leadership has been one collosal disaster after another. We were destined to suffer these Tories for many years since (and maybe more to come).

@@jamesmedina2062 when we were kids my sister, cousins and I used to get bullied alot and one day my Dad said to us that to stop the bullying it was up to us. He said we had to make it more than it was worth to the bully and they'll stop. He then explained that if somebody was to hit us we were to hit them straight back but, hit them harder. If somebody was mean to us - genuinely mean and he said that we'd know it when it happened, anything or anyone that tried to make us feel small or less than we were, we were to punch them in the face. Hard. Nevermind waiting for the teacher or an adult as that most likely wouldn't stop the bullying. He was right! We started fighting back. We were 8, 9 and 10yr old kids and we were fighting back against bigger older kids. And it worked. The bullying stopped. I believe what's happening in the Ukraine is just like back then just with more drastic consequences. Putin is a bully and the Ukraine is showing him what its worth to be that bully. Now they need to show him it costs more than it's worth.
