NATO had a treaty with Russia to not have bordering countries join nato. Ukraine has always been seen as part of Russia (in russias eyes). Neither Russia nor USA are angels, they are just competitors for influence within Europe, they both have done plenty of clandestine operations to get where they are now, and after the fall of the Soviet Union, there were plenty of neutral countries liberated from bear's influence. A new battle for the influence thus began, until the West met the East through their expansion of influence with each other again. The difference is, that no large nation wanted to join Russia's sphere of influence by a democratic process, only as a dictatorship puppet state, as Russia is not enthusiastic about democracy, not even an illusion of democracy as the West has for the same reason why China isn't a democracy, it would be counterproductive to the unity of the nation that would at best end like EU, at worst like the middle east. That's why only the Crimea region that was part of the Russia for a long time joined Russia somewhat legitimately and without any fight as somewhat larger piece of land.

Well, he just suddenly understood that even when Russia had made strong economy, good relations with the West, military spending decrease and had pacified rebels they werent even considering integrating Russia in NATO. Russia asked NATO in the 90s many times, Putin asked to joinn NATO in the early 00s and even tried to do that with Medvedev in late 00s. They didnt even listen. America thought Russia joining NATO would destroy their domination over the Globe. All Eltsin and Putin got were 15 new NATO countries with american bases on the border of Russia. Ukraine, Syria and Libia were just the last points when US made Russia aggressive towards NATO. At this point the war was unbelievable but quite obvious. By the way, when Putin announced the War on 24th 02.22 he said not only about aggressive NATO expansion (media loves telling about it) but also about the fact that he many times asked joining NATO and always got ignored. but you should forget that because Putin is just bad and you should pay more of your money to the military magnats.

It’s refreshing to see intelligent individuals in this chat who see through the veil of politics. I think the main reason people in the west have some form of respect for Putin is because he does not appear desperate to label other nations as villainous or dangerous, he may imply it in a subtle way but he’s doesn’t come off as the impulsive mad man that so many of our media outlets have portrayed him as.. it’s the one sided narratives in the west that create so much distrust in our governments, and as a formality distrust in our leadership.

There are many factors here, but a big one is that Putin probably knew Western leaders wanted to look good in their country and constituents’ eyes when they seem to be cooperating productively with Russia (previously the big bad Soviet Union), and even seeming to bring them “to heel”. The closest Putin ever got to cooperation was suggesting once that he wanted Russia to be invited into NATO, as opposed to applying to the organization and going through the meticulous approval process like every other nation.

Ukrainian people chose their leader! through popular democratic vote, as soon as someone who is not under Putin became President , he took Crimea and funded Separatists in Donbass region in 2014.
