It's a common false idea that if you don't eat junk food and go to gym many times a week then your calories in/calories out can't explain your weight. But the truth is that it's extremely easy to overeat on normal food. It's the portion sizes. Someone very close to me is very obese, but doesn't really eat junk food. But their portions are huge. Like a casserole dish that would last me 2 days is one meal for them. But it's not only their portions; I'm short, and people regularly comment that my portions are too small. But if I ate bigger portions, I would get bigger. It surprises people how easily calories add up and how little a very short person needs. And the gym is for muscles. No matter how many times a week you excercise, weight loss happens in the kitchen.

Let's say she was 250 and exercised twice a week--she'd need something like 2750 calories to maintain her weight and 2250 to lose at a rate of 1lb/week. Then after losing 30lbs if she did no other changes, her new tdee would be 2550, so her new calorie goal would be 2050. I suggest people adjust their tdee after every 10lbs of weight change for best results. This applies to both gaining and losing weight.

I haven’t gone through WLS but it’s a pet peeve of mine when people think it’s a short cut, “cheat”, or easy way. It shows their ignorance about how it works. It’s not magic. It’s helpful. You still have to eat fewer calories than you burn. Good job on the 180 lbs. Don’t let anybody make you feel you didn’t earn it.

I was obese, had a wreck that disabled me so I had to use aids (wheelchair/walker/etc) to get around, and the looks of disgust I got from people at the grocery - one of the few chores I could do for my family - nearly had me in tears on more than one occasion. The fact that, multiple times, some self righteous witch felt the need to say something about the contents of my grocery cart - always an item requested by my husband - made me really want to never go in a store again. If delivery or pick up had been an option then, I never would have. I tend to be an optimist, give benefit of the doubt to everyone until proven otherwise, and when she said how long she had been dieting and exercising, my first thought was, "omg, have you seen a doctor? something must be wrong with you!" but that thought was immediately replaced with "she's lying somewhere - to herself when she accounting for her intake, or here." When I started tracking with an easy to use app, I started noticing all the times I would instinctually go for food and the only thing stopping me was I was too lazy to record it. A little taste of something here and there - no, that one bite won't undermine your efforts, but the fact you take a dozen bites a day will. Recently had an eye opener when I realized that not all of my sugar free drink mixes/supplements were 0 calorie - one actually has 50 calories! Again, one little 5 calorie water flavoring isn't going to derail you, but drinking 5 or more a day, with that sweetness and acidity actually making you feel more hunger, is contradictory to being accountable for your intake. It sucks that it takes no effort at all to get obese - it's quick and easy like sliding down a mountain easy, but losing an excessive amount of weight is so freaking hard with so little positive feedback along the way. IDC about all those ads saying "lose 10lbs and it's like 20lbs off your knees" or whatever it says, chances are (if you're extremely obese) you won't feel a difference until you lose 50 or more lbs, and no one may notice a difference until you lose even more than that. I remember going to church, so proud of receiving my 75lb loss charm at WW, even though no one there had noticed I was even trying to lose weight. All that pride went into the trash when I overheard them asking a normal size woman if she'd lost weight and she beamed and said, "Yes! 8lbs!" Ma'am, I could lose 8lbs in boob sweat in a day. That is so not fair. I lost about 100lbs before people started noticing I'd lost weight, but once I'd lost 140, they started noticing if I lost more than 5 lbs. Where was all that encouragement when I thought it would never happen? I'm 30 months into my weight loss/ fitness journey, have at least another 40lbs to go, and I know, because of my relationship with food, I will have to follow my eating plan for the rest of my life. Alcoholics don't get to stop avoiding alcohol, addicts don't get to stop avoiding drugs, and I don't get to stop exercising control over my food choices. I am so glad I started out my journey with the promise to not make changes I couldn't live with - if I couldn't see myself doing it for the next 20 years, it wasn't an option. I didn't set a goal to lose X lbs, either. My goal was to get stronger and build muscle mass - something that can actually show as weight gain. I figured if I did that, it would increase my metabolism and endurance, and weight loss would naturally follow or at least be easier to achieve. I committed to 3 days a week, 1 hour of exercise (walking and strength training), and in over 2.5 years, I've only missed a handful of days. Most weeks, I exercise 4 or 5 days, and I'm always at the gym 2hours or more, but knowing that 3 x 1 is all I *have* to do, makes it so much easier. As for diet, no foods are forbidden, but mindlessly eating is. I do have a calorie target, fat and carb budget that I try not to exceed, but focus more on reaching my protein, fiber, and food diversity goals (getting foods from every food group). Seeing my food as fuel by looking at the macros, changed my relationship with it. Knowing that, while I may enjoy the convenience of grabbing a burger at Sonic on my way home from the gym, it barely makes a dent in my protein goals, I will have to eat a ton of veg when I get home to even start to feel full, and I can't have any fats at all for the rest of the day - how can I get my protein in then? - makes me drive on by. Anyone who thinks weight loss surgery is "the easy way out" has no clue. The super restrictive, liquid only for a long time, diet is so restrictive that it could be considered a war crime. The amount of time they will have to spend thinking about food - about getting in their water and their nutrition - daily for months or years after is insane. The amount of restriction they will have to live with to keep the surgery from failing requires the dedication of an athlete. Add to all this, it's MAJOR EFFING SURGERY, on your freaking digestive system!! It will take a year just to recover from that alone! I've had surgeries on other parts of my body and hated recovery so much that, despite all the loose skin I have now and will have at the end of my weight loss journey, I can't see myself having it surgically removed - just can't see it being worth the recovery process at my age (55).

Because she said she’s had uterine problems, I’m going to say this: the medical establishment is still woefully behind the times on anything having to do with abnormal female reproductive issues. I don’t know how many women I know who were told that they were fine and nothing was wrong only to either give up and get sicker than sh*t OR to finally find a doctor who looks just a millimeter deeper and finds an actual issue that is actively going on. I hope she finds a better medical team bc there very well may be something going on. Editing to add: I’m not at all disagreeing with anything John is saying here. Just talking about a suspicion I have about this particular case.

I'll say another thing as well, as someone that suspects I might have PCOS (two of my sisters have it): I feel unreasonably hungry sometimes. Not because I haven't eaten enough, but because it's getting near my period and my head screams at me to eat anything and everything. It's really quite easy to snack a bunch and think "I'm not eating that much." A lot of times you aren't eating huge quantities either, but if it's the wrong food then you're quickly way over. This is especially true if you are short. Plus, healthy doesn't always = low calorie. Think about nuts for example, they're healthy, but not low calorie. I think most people are lying to themselves, though they probably do also have issues that make it harder. I'm not saying that to be mean to anyone, I just wish people would believe in themselves and their power to change things.

After fixing all that and going on meds to regulate my hormones I started getting energy back and started losing some. Then my Dr suggested bariactric surgery. She said with thyroid issues it's an uphill battle and to get to a healthy weight she suggested I take drastic action. I'm one year post gastric bypass and 111 pounds down! I feel so much better!! It wasn't hard for me because I was already eating healthy! I eat the same portion I did prior to surgery. I finally realized I wasn't crazy. My body needed the extra help. But I developed an extreme attachment to food to deal with my trauma starting at the age of 4. That's something that feels impossible to fight against. But unlike this woman (who I feel for and I understand her pain) I know exactly why I'm still fat. Weight loss happens in the kitchen. Even on anti-obesity meds and after weight loss surgery. I yo-yoed for years on diets in the overweight and obese ranges. My last straw and wake up call was having a heart attack. I finally got referred to a preventative cardiologist who prescribed me a glp1. With wegovy and diet and exercise, I lost 70 lbs and moved from obese to a normal bmi. Even more important, I reduced my average blood pressure and therefore reduced the dosage of my blood pressure meds and cholesterol meds. I was on the road to getting a sleep study, and getting diagnosed with sleep apnea. I now no longer need to wear a cpap 8 hours a day strapped to my face. I was on the road to diabetes, and now have a healthy a1c not even close to diabetes. It’s really not about just the pros and cons of the drug or surgery, it’s thinking about what happens with me if I remain obese and do nothing (or do what I’ve always done - yo-yo dieting). That was a risk I could no longer afford. I’ve been successfully maintaining my weight for 6+ months with the help of wegovy.

There should be a tv show where all the obese people who say that they can't help it (and who are accused for lying), would check in in a medical center for a month and eat only monitored. NOT Secret eaters, because it's premise is that everyone lies, but a show that would investigate just how little or sensibly person can eat and STILL not lose weight, of how much their weight loss can differ with excately the same parameters.
@strategicsage76943 ай бұрын
This is something that really has been studied extensively. Not on a TV show, but under far better and more controlled circumstances. Short version is: the overwhelming majority of people who think they are counting their calories accurately, aren't and are underestimating what they eat and/or not tracking everything, and also that there is some metabolic variance between people but not a great deal and people who think they have super-low metabolism, don't actually unless there's some extreme and rare medical condition going on. You can predict by someone's weight with a very high degree of accuracy a reasonable range of calories for them to eat and consistently lose weight.

If you consistently eat at a calorie deficit over time, there are only two possible outcomes: 1) Reduction in body mass 2) Immediate death Any other outcome violates the first law of thermodynamics. No violation of the first law has ever been observed. People don't just drop dead from a calorie deficit unless they are already severely underweight, so if you are overweight, the outcome of a consistent deficit over time will be a reduction in body mass. There is no other possibility. This doesn't mean very much in practice, but it's important to keep it in mind to keep yourself grounded. The hard truth is that if you aren't losing weight, then you aren't in a deficit. Once you internalize that, you can finally take the steps needed to actually be in a deficit and finally lose the weight. In practice, I've found these are the most common reasons people aren't in a deficit when they think they are: 1) Overestimating calorie burn from exercise. This is a big one. Some people *dramatically* overestimate. The calorie burn that it shows on the treadmill is total nonsense. Your exercise probably burns way less than you think it does. In my opinion, it's best not to factor in exercise at all when you are calculating your budget. 2) Not updating your budget as you lose weight. The less you weigh, the lower your basal metabolic rate will be, and the more efficient your movement will be, which makes point 1 even worse. You need to periodically reevaluate your budget as your weight decreases 3) Not counting snacks or cheat meals or cheat days. I've found it shockingly easy to eat 5000+ calories on a cheat day, which basically wipes out the progress of the rest of the week. Or you might ignore that one snack cause it was only like 100 calories, except it was actually 200, and you actually had a 200 calorie snack 5 times today. 4) Not counting condiments, sauces, dressings, toppings, etc. When I switched to a higher protein diet as I started to lift weights, I hit a plateau for a month before realizing that I was pouring 500 calories of oil into the pan whenever I would cook chicken. Those "little things" add up fast.

I feel for her. I’ve definitely been there. I was only able to start losing weight when I upped my daily calories to around 2300 calories from 1200. And that’s because at 1200, I was miserable, stressed, sleeping poorly, and ultimately binging regularly because I couldn’t control myself once I “let loose.” 2300 seemed like so much but then I realized it was actually an amount that satiated me and I stopped having intense cravings, stopped binging, slept better, and had energy to move more throughout the day. It was still more calories than my “healthy weight” permits but it was a great deficit compared to what my weekly averages ended up being.
@discordantduck18083 ай бұрын
key to note that this works when you are honest with tracking your calories and you stick to it, if you go rewarding yourself with "cheat days" and lie about what 2300 actually means you'll just run into the same problems. this is why it worked for you and didn't for her.

My weight was holding me back from starting a family, from getting proper medical treatment. I did decide to get weight loss surgery because I was approaching the very real possibility of having my ovaries removed (not related to my weight, but we wanted to start a family and my weight was holding me back from my fertility in that regard.) It was the best thing I ever did for myself, even though in the end other medical issues prevented me from being able to start a family. Having the surgery was also eye opening for me in the way I realized how much I told my self unintentional lies and did exactly what you describe. Which is have days I ate 1000, maybe 800 calories and then had two or three days of binge eating and drinking a month where I would eat and drink all those calories I skipped out on over the week. My activity, mobility and energy had only ever allowed me to move just enough but never enough to make a difference in my weight UNTIL I started losing the weight. Before being approved for surgery I had to go to therapy for binge eating, and see a nutritionist for a year. That changed my life more then the surgery, but the surgery allowed me to lose the weight quickly enough to give me a fighting chance for my goals. I hope she cand find the same kind of peace and balance in life I have.

And with an ED the hormones are affected too. You can eat everything in moderation really, if foods are forbidden they become a focus, so the problem is both physical and psycological.
@Gna_d543 ай бұрын
That's strange advice though because if you genuinely need to lose weight, especially as a girl with conditions that make it harder to move the scale, then you have to eat under your TDEE. The problem isn't people eating under their maintenance but people being on a deficit and then binging every few days, effectively wiping out their deficit. People who are actually monitored always lose weight on a calorie deficit.
@lindanj98303 ай бұрын
@@Gna_d54 I would probably start with adding weightlifting to my exercise routine to build muscles, adjust my food intake to make sure I got good proteins, essential fat and complex carbs. Then with established exercise routines I would cut a moderate number of calories from my daily food intake - this is not a diet but for life, so no elimination of good fats, or complex carbs, and then the hard part - stick with the routines. Even if you decide on gastric bypass or ozempic you still need to have the right lifestyle to start.
@BronzedBeast2 ай бұрын
@@lindanj9830you're a liar lol! Sorry to say this but this woman hasn't dieted before. Starving yourself one day and bingeing the next isn't a diet. Also the fact you mentioned starvation mode speaks volumes. That doesn't exist. Your body doesn't hold onto fat and break down muscle. That defeats the purpose of fat. Here's how your body works. First you use up your glycogen reserves. This is any sugars in the body. Next you start to burn body fat. Doesn't matter how fast. Now true your muscles may shrink because there's no calories going to maintain them, if you resistance train and eat enough protein despite still being in a huge deficit, you will retain your muscle. Just not build any. After your body gets to 3%bf that's when your body stops the fat reserve and starts catabolizing your muscles. Now there is a cause where if you stop eating completely after a few days you'll enter ketosis and if you're still not eating you will slow down and won't burn as much calories. You're not producing any fat. You're burning it still. It's just now you're too sleepy to burn the regular amount

My wife is one of these people who thinks that she can’t lose weight naturally. She would work out three times a week, but a slow 20 minute walk on the treadmill isn’t gonna burn any calories. She would diet. Her diet consisted of her going extreme for four days and then binging on the fifth. She claimed to be able to count calories. She never looked at the nutrition information on the food, and she never measured or weighed her food. She ate out at fast food and restaurants for 75% plus of her meals. This is the way that the majority of these people diet. They have no clue about nutrition or fitness and then they wonder why it doesn’t work.

My understanding is that having metabolic issues with pre diabetes can make weight loss more complicated, unless you really go low carb? I'd also add that when you are heavier you are inevitably moving more slowly than a trim fit person. So burning less calories from your walk or just your day

I clicked on this video so fast because I (DonMom) wrote comments under both of her tiktok rants that I think closely line up with your views. I wish her escape from the crazy pressure. She talks a lot about how everyone has a "Hollywood" idea of her being fat: assuming she stuffs herself with junk etc. Then I saw a video of her trying to prove she is trying by showing how she chokes down protein coffee with chia and flax seed (instead of junk or sodas). Chokes down is a clue there. So I wrote on her second rant that this is a "Hollywood" idea of weightloss. She doesn't have to "choke down" anything she doesn't like especially if she fell for lists of "superfoods". It hurts me she is making herself so crazy instead of being consistent and NICE to herself. I feel for her. I've been there and ugh.

Despite knowing and being frustrated that other people could eat six tacos and I could eat just one, it was still my responsibility to do something. Life isn’t fair. Some of us can really only consume a small amount of calories. I was also tracking and weighing everything. I do believe a small amount of people really are tracking and not losing…so I did what I needed to lose weight. I had gastric bypass surgery. Was it fair? Nope! But it was my responsibility to do what I needed to be healthy.

Going through perimenopause and discovering estrogen dominance was affecting so much of my life; I had to work with a nutritionist; a GYN and my regular doctor to regulate my hormones and eat in a way that reduced cortisol. There were certain foods that I had to eliminate Because they were causing inflammation in my body. Not all calories affect the female body in the same way when I changed over to eliminating certain vegetables and all grains, but still eating in the same caloric way. A lot of inflammation left my body and a lot of water weight and we slowly introduced foodthat I could tolerate, but it took a while for my body to regulate itself so that no matter what the caloric source; I would not have inflammation in my body which contributed to my hormonal imbalance

I don't know.. I feel like there's more going on with insulin resistance and metabolism, especially with women than most people realize. I had been able to get extremely strict and diet and lose small amounts of weight, but if I briefly fell off my diet, I would quickly balloon back up and gain substantially more. Even being super morbidly obese I would have to severely restrict calories in order to lose any weight, I was constantly starving. I was just set up to fail. My doctor ended up putting me on metformin (not diabetic or pre diabetic) and for once I was able to lose weight and restrict calories in a healthy amount. And even if I fell off my diet for a couple weeks, I didn't gain much, if any weight back. I was able to sustain weight loss for the first time in my life. It took me a year to lose 50 pounds but it was a huge accomplishment because I had never been able to keep weight off ever. I am now on semaglutide and have lost another 55 pounds. So 105 pounds total. I have fought my weight my entire life, I am 37 years old and for once I don't feel like I am in a battle. I am able to make much healthier choices and am starting to become much more mobile. I think a lot of this is because of pre-made/packaged foods, especially those with a lot of additives and preservatives. I started making as much as a could at home and if I did use a pre-made item, I looked at the ingredients to make sure it didn’t have any of that extra stuff. Once I really nailed that down, the weight just started coming off naturally(down 35lbs in 7 months). The food-noise went away and I could easily focus on eating when I felt hungry and giving into some cravings on occasion. Also, don’t eat the low fat/low calorie/sugar free options because they are the worst offenders. Eat the real thing and you’ll feel more satisfied with less.

I do, however want to state that my way of losing weight is indeed eat less (junk food, food with addicting properties) and move (the way I like) more. What has worked for me, as a slightly overweight woman to move to normal range was mindfulness, a short period of time with 16:8 intermittent fasting to get a certain sense of a routine around food and being forgiving towards myself by allowing myself to occasionally socially eat at special events or meetups. It's okay to not always be perfect, a diet is not a magic bullet or pill. It's about changing a certain part of your lifestyle and perceviering while being forgiving and mindful towards yourself.

I think her personal trainers forgot to tell her about metabolic adaptation? Weight loss isn’t linear, it plateaus regularly as your body adapts to the lower caloric intake and greater output, and you have to change your routine to suit your new metabolic characteristics. It doesn’t sound like she’s aware of this. The suggestion that people cut out certain foods is bc it’s an easier way of reducing calories, not because those foods are inherently bad. I would recommend that she keep a food diary and diligently write down everything she eats in a day. Sometimes we are in denial about how much we ate until we see it itemized.
