This reminds me of when I recently went to inquire about a gym membership and the guy that was helping me was giving me a lengthy (unsolicited) speech about body fat percentage. I made a joke along the lines of “wow you’re giving me more information than my doctor even does” and he said “We are doctors. Doctors of fitness...” at which point I laughed, but then noticed that he kept a straight face because he apparently wasn’t kidding. I also later asked him if he was a personal trainer but he was just the front desk guy, so he actually had zero qualifications to give me advice 🤦🏻‍♀️ needless to say I’m still looking for a gym lol

This is SUCH an important topic! It’s so harmful to beginners for influencers w/ no actual qualifications or experience to provide info, services, & products while claiming to be experts when they’re not. I actually got attacked in the comments of a recent video on John’s channel for speaking up about this issue, which proves some of the points made here. There’s unfortunately an endless amount of misinformation & low quality services/products being pushed out daily by people who have no business calling themselves fitness professionals, & it’s harming the consumer most..... In the end, don’t make the mistake of conflating the size of someone’s following or their physique for the amount of knowledge, experience, or the quality of info/services they have to offer.
@poopmaschmoop4122
@poopmaschmoop4122 3 жыл бұрын
This topic really doesn’t get talked about enough! I’m working towards becoming a personal trainer so I can give education advice on current topics in my community. ( But I’m new to the fitness world and I’m trying to learn all I can. I’m certainly not certified yet) In general, I make videos based on my experience right now. But people ask all the time for meal plans, macros, etc. I’m working on educating myself. But I certainly don’t feel like I have the knowledge to give advice about these subjects. I have had to politely tell a few people that I can’t give them a macro breakdown because I’m not qualified and that would be irresponsible. There’s so many factors that play into designing a meal plan/macro breakdown. ( if you make a mistake someone could end up in the hospital) I have seen so many influencers in my community specifically, giving people terrible advice when they’re not qualified to do so. Then they turn around and post these “challenge videos “ because they get views. These videos ultimately convince thousands of people to try a dumb 30 day challenge diet because an influencer said it was healthy. It’s one thing to give examples of your nutrition plan or work out routine in a vlog style. As long as you’re not being super specific. It’s another thing when you are sharing a “meal plan for weight loss” without any knowledge of nutrition except for anecdotal evidence.

Thats because people get a following and automatically think this word "influencer" gives them power. It goes straight to the ego and they're done for. At that point its all about arrogance and ego. Yes!!! The “expert” claims are also harmful to those of us who are actual experts. I’ve been a personal trainer for years and I have a weight loss specialization. That’s an actual certification, but a lot of clients think I just gave myself that title because that’s what people do on social media 😫
@WhatIsItToBurn
@WhatIsItToBurn 3 жыл бұрын
The problem with those PT and weight loss specialist titles is the amount of people who SUCK that also have those titles. My university does PT courses. Having "Personal Trainer from University of X" looks really good (it's a good university, all certification is proper), but so many people that get it have no idea. It makes it harder for the PTs who do know (like yourself) because of how many ignorant PTs are out there. My mum wanted to lose weight, I told her to eat a caloric deficit and move more (just to start, she is very unfit. I was going to build her up at her own pace because she has health issues and is nearly 60). She asked a PT and she said "Do HIIT 4 times a week with lifting 4 times a week, eat a keto diet, and have a personal session once a week". Does the PT method work? Yeah maybe, except it didn't here. My mum ate a caloric surplus on Keto (PT said "it's impossible to gain weight on KETO" lmao) and HIIT for her made her hate life. After asking around the other people, turns out this PT just tells people to see her once a week, puts them on HIIT and KETO. I know it's anecdotal, but I have seen so many bad PTs.

My thing about the “hormone balancing” topic that is frustrating is that there are a lot of women out there walking around with hormone issues. When you bring it up to your Dr they either 1. Don’t want to do a full panel test 2. They dismiss you saying you’re too young or something to have those issues 3. Just refuse to do any of the testing needed to do it. 4. Your insurance doesn’t cover it. Paying out of pocket for this tests are super expensive. So naturally following influencers who have gone through something similar are nice to witness and observe to see what kinds of things they did to help themselves. What’s frustrating is when people replicate what someone else did without knowing their exact condition. No two diagnoses should ever be the same. Hormones are like a symphony. If one is even a slight bit out of wack you’ll hear when a someone in a real orchestra is off pitch. Some supplements can actually make your condition worse. As someone else said previously. It’s very difficult to navigate the space of wellness on the internet’s when soooo many people constantly say things that contradict eachother. Especially when the professionals can’t come to a conclusion on a topic. It’s even more annoying when a company tries to offer a “cure all” when it comes to hormones but it’s nice that there is even an option out there that could help the right people. That’s why finding a good brand is essential. (I do know that 1st Phorm does do 3rd party testing now- just as a side note - I’m not a big Bowmar fan but I appreciate how transparent they are too) If someone needs hormonal help the best bet is finding a good register dietician who can help you navigate that space. There are far too many “diet experts” out there that have NO credentials. When it comes to influencer turned business owner- it’s heartbreaking to see when things take a wrong turn. I was so upset by some of things I’ve seen Balance do. I really hope they are able to turn it around. Business is freaking hard. I have multiple degrees in the subject and can still admit there is SO much to learn. A lot of which will come from making mistakes unfortunately. Everyone who was burned by them deserves to voice their opinion but I also hope people keep that same energy with other brands as well. The thing with the influencer culture is that this is totally uncharted territory. We as a society are still learning and finding the boundaries of this new direct to customer sales technique that has come from the social media realm. It will be interesting as time goes on to see how institutions like the FTC get involved so fewer people get scammed.

This is exactly the same with men too. Even in countries where it's free (I am English), your numer 1, 2 and 3 still stand. As a man, I think this is why so many men buy steroids, SARMs, etc. I know so many men who have cupboards full of suppliments (legal or otherwise) for these things that it's crazy. The fact men and women all follow what someone random says, just because they look like we want to, is crazy.

@@WhatIsItToBurn thank you for letting me know that. I appreciate it. I’m sorry that’s happening to you guys across the pond as well. Hormones are so delicate and complicated. I’ve had hormonal issues for ages and the only “solution” I have ever been offered my modern medical experience is being offered to go on the BC pill. I was sadly a supplement junkie at one point which probably didn’t help my hormones issues. Now all I take is a fish oil, prenatal, and maybe some protein powder if I couldn’t get enough protein in throughout the day. My heart breaks for those who get taken advantage of in these situations.

@@Megan___ Yes! I've have hormone issues for a while and I've worked my butt off to get a job that I knew had incredible insurance, so that I could finally go to the doctor and get the full panel tests done because previous doctors just shook their heads and threw their hands in the air. It's crazy because my Dr said that my hormones are considered "normal" even though my symptoms would suggest otherwise and it may be because certain receptors are hyper sensitive. So even with all the tests, I ended up walking away with few solutions and became...desperate to find my own. If I didn't know any better, I would be that person buying loads of "hormone balancing" products and getting scammed because of how distressing some of my symptoms have been and how long I've been going through this and how much I just want to get things back to normal.

Hm. Interesting talk and important to point out some of the harmful things about the industry. I noticed that cardio is really getting slammed right now (and for the last few years), but it's something I really enjoy and what got me into fitness in the first place. And that's just one of the things that's so wrong with what some influencers are pushing these days.

I am so happy I found your channel!!! The first video I saw was your balance athletics video and I had no idea what drama was even going on until you. It’s crazy because I thought I was someone who is pretty submerged in the fitness industry, follow a decent amount of people on insta etc, yet somehow I missed what was happening. Now I find this video and YALL are talking about EXACTLY what I’ve posted on my old insta months ago about a certain supplement company who claimed many things about their products but personally I knew the owners and tried the products and knew it was BS. But because I’m a small “influencer” people don’t listen. So THANK YOU for doing what you do with these videos!!!

@@angum8264 in my experience, I have *never* experienced a stimulating effect from caffeine, and more often than not, I can drink highly caffeinated drinks and go to sleep. I don't speak for every person with ADHD, but I would assume if you have ADHD, caffeine wouldn't energize you like it does others. But I don't know everything you have going on ya know, so I don't want to say anything for sure.

I consider 99 percent of these "influencers" dangerous. They have no idea what they are talking about and I feel sorry for the young impressionable kids that follow them. I'm sick of social media, it has become toxic and I'm on the verge of getting rid of all of it. There is nothing "social" about it.

I completely agree that the targeting of vulnerable people through manipulative marketing is WAY more prevalent in the influencer space.... The fact that influencers, even ones with 1 million+ subscribers, seem so much more attainable makes their influence so much more impactful because they don't seem larger than life like celebrities do. People often don't realize that these popular influencers have marketing teams, PR people, management, and ulterior financial interests just like celebrities, but without the publicity and reputation that makes people more skeptical of celebrity endorsements.

Regarding 3rd party testing: it's expensive. In the race to get to market after discovering a new ingredient or formula, manufacturers will skip 3rd party testing so they can beat their competitors to market. Other times they're a weak company and just can't afford it. And sometimes they just don't care; they just wanna cash in on a fad and don't care to validate their products.

Oh shit I didn’t even know you were sponsored by BPN but their preworkout is tasty as hell and their protein is pretty good too. I’ve been getting a bunch of samples from different companies because I’m so picky about taste. I like BPN but so far everything by EFlow has been my fave with regards to taste and energy! I think a video going over some large supp brands and some of the most reliable ones would be helpful as hell especially for folks like me who are starting to work out again 5 times a week :)

My father, who.is 63 years old, thinks that since he has lost 100lbs that he can motivate people to “never say never”. He desperately wants to become an influencer. He met his goal by doing Keto and weightlifting. That is great that he achieved his goal, but it’s so frustrating that he now wants to take his “show” on the road. He asked me if I want to join him and I told him “no”, because I still have weight to lose and I do not feel it is right for me to provide information to people when I am not licensed, educated, or trained to do so. Plus, I am not on a Keto diet or any fad based diet. I only count my calories and use portion control for weight loss. So, it really bothers me that my father, who does not hold any degrees or certificates, thinks he can literally motivate people to lose weight. Funny thing is, I did this all on my own, without his help and I’m down 99lbs....
