As a person who's struggled with weight my whole life, my heart goes out to anyone who's weight has spiraled so out of control they're over 300 pounds. Carrying 200+ pounds of fat wrecks the body, and even after major weight loss, those effects remain and create issues for the rest of a person's life. It's easy for healthy-weight people and the medical community to judge significantly overweight - it's hard not to - but in reality, it's a mental health issue more than a weight issue. Just like with a depression, you can't just tell someone to 'snap out of it', or 'stop eating'. It's a hard, hard road.

First off, its awesome she got her mobility back and I hope she keeps going and gets more healthy. Secondly, as long as they don't discourage people from losing weight if they want to, why would anyone have an issue with her salon? Losing weight comes from a place of self love. And until you are ready to lose weight you need a place where you feel loved. So the plus size salon definitely deserves to exist for those women. It doesn't really matter how you tell someone these days; you can say it nicely, or are you can be a jerk. They will take it exactly the same either way. We've gotten soft and it really hurts to admit this. We have no resilience. We curl into a ball when things don't go our way. One way or another, our society needs to be more healthy. Obesity not only causes death, but it lowers the quality of life (constant fatigue, lower immunity, health issues, more prone to injury, and sooo much more). Take care of yourself people please!

I understand that there's a difference between being plus-sized and being so big you're immobile. It's good that there's bigger chairs for bigger women. But at the same time, if you are so big thay you break a salon chair then I think that should be a "click moment" to change. Especially here in America, a lot of our furniture is already designed to go up to bigger sizes so if you're breaking a salon chair then I have to think that you're past 350/400lbs. I don't know that I necessarily think it's bad she started the business but I don't think it's an overall solution for bigger people.

I totally agree with your comment. I can't understand how making things bigger will help morbidly obese people. I think it does the opposite and makes them become comfortable the way they are. We don't know everyone's story. It is always helpful to feel like there is a place in society for you and that you have a chance to still feel like a "human". I'm sure these people feel helpless and alone when they don't get the chance to do basic things like get their hair cut. They could have lost 100 lbs and plan to lose 500 more, but they won't be able to get a good hair cut for 5 years if we don't create these types of places for them. This woman is both providing a safe place for other struggling people and she continues to work on her own health and is able offer her insight on morbid obesity to future clients with this.

What has put you in a position to binge constantly? self love? no. I think the salon is great, because the thing is, we can’t take someone, isolate them, confine them to their homes in shame, and then go “okay now try to eat less and exercise”. Like it’s just not going to work. Shame is a frankly terrible motivator and depression is the motivation killer, how can we expect anybody to take care of themselves and their bodies much less make drastic changes under those circumstances? So as long as the salon doesn’t become some sort of safe haven for FA misinformation, I think the salon can be a great idea.

I just had a thought and maybe it's KINDA dumb. But if we had more places that catered to being a safe space for morbidly obese people that would help them. It would help them physically and mentally and in that lead a healthier life. We can sure debate on what healthier means, but movement needed to get to and from a space and just being mentally well leads to doing and moving more and that is never a bad thing. That's the thought. Some may see it as a problem and that it lends itself to "feeding" the problem, but I can see the solution in it too. That's it. That's the thought.

Maybe if people can feel more confident about themselves, say from getting to go to a salon and being glammed up, that that may motivate them to make changes to their lives? I think feeling good about yourself and valuing yourself are key components to weight loss. It can be easy to not change your habits when you feel ugly or like you're not worth it. I think her salon is a great thing and having a business that helps overweight people doesn't encourage obesity. Hope her business is doing well.

The way I see it, even when someone is unhealthy, change and weight loss doesn't come immediately. Everyone deserves to be able to access places for self care and presentation like salons, including fat people. So, whilst if you are at the weight where you break sturdy chairs, you should probably think about making some changes, it doesn't mean they have to sacrifice haircuts until they get there. Although I do find it odd that her first thought when breaking a chair wasn't "oh dear, maybe I should lose a bit of weight if I break furniture." But good on her for starting a business and everything, I hope she succeeds in her goals

Either way it goes she's doing this from a place of love & understanding. It doesn't seem like she's discouraging others from losing weight so why not have a salon that caters to larger sized people. I’m a big girl, not nearly as big as Jamie, but bigger than average. I know the fear of going somewhere and breaking something, or not fitting in a chair. I don’t think providing women with a place they can go and maintain their dignity is a bad thing. I think anyone that is on the larger side has ever not had these fears. It’s been years since I had a pedicure, simply because I’m afraid I won’t fit in the chairs, even though I’m smaller than I was the last time I had one. It’s just a n irrational fear, but it is a fear none the less.

I don’t have 4 hours for a hair appointment. And I work in a public setting. Uneven bangs are a distraction.

Large people exist and they deserve to be treated the same as everyone else. As a plus size woman myself, I know it's important that all sizes have access to those things that make us feel good. The better I feel about myself, the more I'm able to accomplish and the better I treat myself. It's hard being overweight, but people need to understand that we are not "fat". We have fat and fat can lost, but we are not the fat, if that makes sense. I love that this woman took a traumatic experience that I'm sure others of her size have experienced and made a space that will help mitigate that trauma. She's not saying it's ok to be unhealthy. She's saying she knows the struggle and here's a place you can feel good about yourself.

The way I look at it is there needs to be places like this. It's great to be all about losing weight and understanding how detrimental to your health being obese is but to be in a position where you fear leaving the house or going to any setting that would be anything close to what she went through is just horrible. It's wonderful she created a place out of her trauma. I hope she continues to work towards getting healthy and chooses to use her story to help others. As long as the salon isn't promoting not losing weight or losing weight and just creates a safe comfortable space and doesn't skinny shame anyone either it's a wonderful thing she's done. Congrats to her, her successes both the salon, the physical and the emotional and here's to many more.

3 years ago I was 280 lbs. I am now 132 lbs. my goal weight is 125, although most of my friends and neighbors have told me I don't need to lose more weight, for a year and 1/2 I ate 1000 calories a day, and exercised 2 1/2 hours a day, when I hit 145 I increased my calories to 1250 because it helps me to not feel hungry, the last bit of weight is coming off very slowly about 1/4 of a lb. a month but that is okay, actually it hasn't been hard to get the weight off, and I feel like myself again, I was always thin growing up. I am 5'6" and 64 years old if I can do it anyone can, count your calories on a day when you aren't dieting, and cut it back by 500 calories, you will lose weight, not everyone is willing to eat 1000 calories a day, but you don't have to, to lose weight.

She still is! Body positivity is not the same as HAES. We can create safe, comfortable spaces for bigger bodies while also not pretending that being that size is perfectly healthy.

I'm very torn on this. On one hand, everyone should get to feel beautiful, have a place they can go where they feel safe. Have somewhere they can exist without embarrassment or harassment. However, on the other side of that coin, I feel places like these can lead to a slippery slope of accommodating the world for those who are morbidly obese. When, at the end of the day the goal is health, you can't be healthy and 400lb. I feel making accomodations for people on a much larger scale than just a beauty salon, may lead to a lack of motivation to be healthy. Why would someone want to lose weight to climb up the stairs when there is a chair lift everywhere? Change comes from within, and what spawns a change, is hardships. It's a very difficult topic, truly. But I am happy for her, achieving her dream

So true comfort most of the times is the biggest deterrent to change .

A human being cannot be a “literal sitting duck.” OMG such a pet peeve that most everybody is constantly incorrectly using that word. You mean she’s a figurative sitting duck. A literal sitting duck is an actual duck that quacks and has feathers ….and is sitting somewhere.

Literally is always used for dramatic affect. Idk why people get bent so hard by common slang when everyone knows what someone means.
