Hope you guys liked the video! Whilst editing this video TLDR News EU posted a great video about the situation with Iceland's military and went into a lot more detail on the history behind it. You've missed the reason WHY the UK bowed to Iceland in the Cod Wars: Iceland's location is extremely strategic as it lies on the way to Russian arctic. In the Cod Wars, Iceland simply threatened to withdraw from NATO, and the US told UK to leave Iceland's claimed maritime zone.

@@TheCaptainSplatter @PBjarniTh There is no requirement for a vote of NATO members to allow for a country to withdrawal from NATO. Withdrawal from NATO is done entirely on the part of the country that would so choose to do so, the other members of NATO can not force a country to remain a part of the alliance. A unanimous vote is only required for a country to join NATO.

@@tvuser9529 More like "TL", but it's not entirely consistent. Sometimes it's more like we would say a double L in English (for example the "ll" in "Snæfellsnes" is pronounced more or less as it would be in English, but with the sound coming from closer to the tip of your tongue, rather than the rear of it). And sometimes (particularly at the end of words) it's more like a "t", followed by a voiceless aspiration that sounds more like an English "sh" than an "L", but there isn't really any way to accurately spell out how it sounds in English. "Eyjafjallajokull" sounds pretty much like AEY-yah-FYAT-tla-YO-kutsh. In order to make sense of the double "L" including a mysterious "T" sound, I recommend trying to pronounce the "L" on the tip of your tongue rather than gutturally. Then say "LLLLLLLLL", with each L making a distinct sound. Notice how each L will be separated by a distinct tapping sound, like a "t", but formed by your tongue against your gums, rather than through closed teeth.

When at 9:50 you say Iceland has had a democracy for one thousand years you are only partially correct. What is now Iceland's parliament, Alþingi, was founded in 930 AD where the major landowners in Iceland had most of the voting power, it was more of an oligarchy. Then under the norwegian, later danish, rule Alþingi lost most of it's powers. When Iceland started to get home rule Alþingi was reinstated. Besides that, nice video.

In WWII Iceland lost 230 people to the war. This might not seem to be a lot - but the population only numbered about 140 thousand at the end of the war. The percentage lost to the war was therefore about .17% whereas the United States (for example) lost .30%. In other words, Iceland's per capita losses (mostly among sailors and fishermen killed by U-boats and aircraft) were about half those of the United States. It is worth noting that the Icelandic deaths were all among civilians - probably exceeding the per capita civilian death toll of most other countries ...

It's membership in nato is what makes its geographical position important, because the interference of naval ships over that vast stretch of ocean is what makes the supply lines so hard to set up, not because the ocean is large. If Iceland was instead allied to China and US/Canada/UK was invading, the fact its surrounded by so much ocean would be a non-sequiter.

I am not sure it's as easy as you try to portray it to be. Because it's so strategically relevant, the Brits and later Americans occupied Iceland during WWII and controlled its exports to Germany AGAINST Iceland's wishes for neutrality. Sure, they're prob glad they werent in the German (or later Soviet sphere), but they had no say in this either. No army, no choice. Their location might make them immune to the need for its own army, but it does not make them immune to foreign occupation or becoming a theatre of war. EDIT: I agree, people should get medals for pronouncing that volcano's name. Also yes, the US put a lot of pressure on the UK to stop the cod wars. Just as they undermined the UK a few other times.

The fishing industry has become our biggest curse. There's only a handful of families that control the fish and they make billions from it. The constant instability of our currency works in their interest as most of the fish is sold to other countries, so if the Króna gets weaker they get more of it when the buyers pay the same price. In 2012 the nation voted and over 65% accepted a new constitution that would change this, however the officials in government who are owned by the fishing companies refuse to honour it, something that has created a lot of tension the past decade. We have a minister of finance that has a massive conflict of interest due to his involvement in the financial industry, to the point where he has told his relatives to buy certain cheap companies just weeks before he himself enacted new laws that made said companies worth significantly more almost overnight. We have a government littered with corruption and we are way to small of a nation to do anything about it. But we sure are peaceful, eh?

Iceland is part of the Scandinavian brotherhood, we have their backs in any event. Unlike Russia, we love our lil bro. Even if it stings that they are so much better than us at football.

The real reason of why nobody invade iceland is that they won't be able to prononce the street name
@Sacto1654

I disagree. Reason: Iceland's highly strategic location in the Atlantic. In fact, the capital of Reykjavík and the main airport at Keflavík would be first strike targets in order to deny the use of Iceland as a base to operate long-range NATO planes used for anti-submarine and anti-shipping duties.

Iceland is hard to invade, but very easy to blockade. Let's say Post-Ukraine War Russia had a massive "accident" with it's GPS systems, meaning a couple of planes bound for Icelandic airports crashed on the runways blocking them, and a few ships ran aground blocking the major ports - in days Iceland would be on it's knees. There would be no threat to invade, so no NATO Treaty to be invoked. Then it would be all down to brinkmanship - how much countries thought controlling Iceland was worth vs the risk nuclear war. Totally impossible? Maybe, but In high stakes geo-political games, the very unlikely can and does happen. Let's remember Iceland didn't win the Cod Wars by any form of force, but purely because of political expedience. He who lives by that sword, could just die by it as well.

No thanks. I live in New Zealand and we are way safer than an island that would become an American military base in any serious conflict.

Iceland is smart to remain independent. Anyone can look at the cold war and see that global powers only ever see smaller nation states as pawns rather than equal collaborators. The idea that China would be any kind of aggressor in the Atlantic is also laughable, so there isn't really a need to double down and become further embedded within the US sphere of influence.

2:40 Iceland however does not act friendly to Russia and this has resulted in some issues with diesel fuels which many shipping boats run on. Unfortunately Russia seems to be open game with disparaging actions and politicizing of the news. Which is ironic for a nation, and city (Reykjavik) which boasts of inclusivity and tolerance.
