My wife was convinced that one of our twins was a boy and the other was a girl because one of them was so much more active and aggressive, sometimes kicking the other across her womb. She literally once felt one of them kick and then felt the other one get knocked against the opposite side of her abdomen. She said, out loud, "Baby A, don't kick your sister!" She wanted to be surprised about their sex. I didn't. So I already knew they were both girls. I just quietly chuckled to myself. Their personalities haven't changed in the 10 years since. The one who did that kicking is now a great soccer player. Scored 2 goals a few days ago. Her sister does dance. (Come to think of it, they were kicking each other a few hours ago...)

My mom used to teach 6th grade science. Every year, when she was teaching about moon phases, she would have her students figure out what the moon phase was on the day they were born, and then tally up the results to see if there was any truth to the full moon theory. She did this for at least ten years, and taught 6 classes a day with about 30 students in each class. The students were always spread evenly across the moon phases. For some reason, my mom took great delight in proving the full moon theory wrong. 😂

To be fair, her study doesn’t account for induction of labor/scheduled c-sections or how long the labor lasts. If a woman is in labor for 36 hours it may be in a different phase at that point. The full moon theory only talks about women going into labor naturally. As a labor and delivery nurse I will die on this hill forever like she says 😂😂

Now look at the lunar phase of the natal chart of the mother, a transit chart for the mother on the day of birth, and the progressed Moon aspects to the natal Moon in the mother's progressed chart. You can also look at Mars transits and Mars progressions. Mars rules bleeding in Astrology. The Moon rules the uterus and fluids. It's not as simple as looking for a full Moon in a natal chart of a child. You need to look at the mother's natal, transit and progressed chart as well.

Some of these old wives tales can be really damaging. After I miscarried, I had a coworker essentially blame me and say "I told you so" because I was still lifting boxes and putting my hands above my head at work, and they had warned me not to. That was devastating in my emotional state. I can now look back and know that my pregnancy was technically over by the time I found out about it. The OB had me wait 4 weeks to see them after I found out, estimating it would be at 10 weeks by then. There was only 5-6 weeks of fetal development, and no heartbeat. I couldn't have done anything.

While stationed in Hawaii I heard of a tradition of a pregnant woman NOT being allowed to wear a closed or circular lei as there is a superstition that if a closed Lei is worn the baby will be strangled by the umbilical cord. Just spitballing here, but when you mentioned that how many of them revolve around the child's sex was down to not having the technology we do now made me think of another potential contributing factor; a baby's sex was more important to people the further back we go - like how parents in many parts of the world would pray for boys and even kill non-male babies. In this scenario where you're more heavily invested in the sex from a personal and cultural standpoint it makes sense that people might come up with all kinds of incidental correlations they said would be predictive.

I think a lot of these old wives tales sadly come from wanting to blame the mother when there's an undesirable outcome 🙁
@hekkoCZ3 жыл бұрын
Or maybe from the other side - from trying to get more control. You can't really control a pregnancy, but you can stop from reaching above your head. Similarly you can't control a thunderstorm, but you can light a candle (in my country there was a tradition of lighting a special "thunder" candle to ward the house from being hit by a lightning; it didn't work but it gave people an illusion of doing something). I think a lot of superstitions come from trying to seize control over things people in the past didn't really understand, especially if they could harm them.

If it's not blaming the mother, it's blaming _something._ Possibly because people don't like being ignorant. In the absence of modern medicine, there's a LOT that people didn't understand and needed an explanation for. Technically, we're the same today even with modern medicine. Lots of us are looking for answers and there are plenty of people willing to either fabricate them or assert an explanation without realizing the flaws in their judgement.

My favourite myth is "bad eyes" - people belived that strangers can curse their babies by just looking at them. That still didn't quite prepare me for just how much hair he ended up having. He has a full head of super soft wavy/curly hair. We get compliments on it all the time. I had no idea that some of these are international, wow😅 Here are some more that i've heard growing up in Bosnia: 1- stepping over cords or hoes(garden ones lol) will cause umbilical cord to wrap around the baby at delivery (so specific😂) 2- cutting you hair while pregnant will make your baby less intelligent 3- petting an animal while pregnant will make your baby hairy (for example if you pet a cat's belly, your baby will have a hairy belly) 4- if you have a specific craving and you cant have it for whatever reason, if you touch your skin anywhere while craving that thing, your baby will be born with a birthmark on that place you touched and it will resemble your craving (shape and/or color wise) 5- if your baby is lying transverse in ur belly - its a girl, if its vertical - a boy 6- if your nipples turn darker during pregnancy - its a boy
@kataw04043 жыл бұрын
That one about the cravings, a friend's mother has the belief about the opposite. If you crave a food and don't get it, you'll have complications and might lose your baby. While she was pregnant with my friend she craved something but refused to eat it since it was expensive and not always yummy. Plus, she didn't believe her mother's superstition. She went into early labor and my friend nearly died. Each pregnancy after that she always caved to her cravings.

Yes, I also noticed that mamy of those tales are international. But I guess many of them came with immigrants from Europe. Maybe in other ethical communities those are different. Few more of them are 1) Don't wear any necklaces or your baby will be strungled with umbilical cord or 2) When you get burnt (hot water, fire, whatever) or you get scared don't touch any part of your body (or at least not face or any visible part) as your baby will be born with birth mark at this place.

When I was pregnant with my first baby, we didn’t find out what we were having. I was so so sick, and miserable the whole time, and all of the older women around me, and even strangers, were convinced I was having a girl because of the old wives tale that girls steal your beauty, and are more likely to make you sick. It was a boy, my second pregnancy was a breeze, and I never got sick once, it was a girl. My third I was sick and miserable again, and it was a boy, and this pregnancy that I’m currently in I’ve had a pretty easy time, only got a little sick in the very beginning, I just found out it’s a girl. I really think for me, my body is just super sensitive to the extra male hormones in my body for my boy pregnancies. My grandmother also got very upset with me in my first pregnancy because I continued my doctor approved work outs, she was sure the cord was going to get wrapped around the baby’s neck. I have heard so many old wives tales since I started having children, I couldn’t even tell you how many. There’s a lot of superstition around postpartum also, my elderly neighbor was very upset when she saw me outside on my front porch with my baby, and said that I wouldn’t heal right, and that women shouldn’t get out of bed for a month after having a baby.

People don't generally get the idea that a statistical difference that shows up in a large study doesn't lead to any real difference on an individual level. For MANY differences between the genders the differences between them are smaller than the variation within each gender, which means that you can't make any meaningful predictions about any individual person based on those statistical differences.

I hate it when people say oh it's just severe morning sickness though. It's not, at all. Comparing morning sickness to HG is like comparing a gentle breeze to a hurricane. Too many women are left untreated or undertreated or feel they have no option but to end the pregnancy because of the severity of their symptoms, and so many end up repeatedly hospitalised or even on TPN because they can't even keep water down even with large doses of IV or subcutaneous antiemetics. It's horrible, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. People can, and have, died from this and it needs far more awareness (and the doctors need to stop relying on ketones to decide they need treatment, alone it's just an indication).

The barometric pressure idea is interesting. I have fibromyalgia and I guarantee you that I can feel even tiny changes in barometric pressure. To the extent that when I start to hurt more for seemingly no reason, the first thing I do is check the weather to see what changed. So it wouldn't surprise me if we first d hard proof that it affects pregnancy and birth. Yes, every OB doctor, nurse, and midwife I know preps for the full moon rush in births, but I've often wondered if the moon affected the way both they and the mums' reactions than it affected the actual birth rate. Maybe one day we'll find a definitive answer there too. Congrats on your millionth subscriber! I've recommended you to my daughter and my aunt, and will keep on passing your videos! Cheers.

I'm so glad you covered the banana thing! I read about that study too and had the same thought as you; how can that possibly happen when it's the sperm, not the egg, that determines the sex. Apparently the study also talked about diet in early pregnancy, not just pre-conception, which I also find difficult to believe given that it is possible for IVF clinics to transfer an embryo of a specific sex, which would suggest that sex is able to be detected at conception. I tried to find the actual study to read, to get the authors' hypothesis as to why this supposedly happens, but could not find it.

I always get a good laugh at these. As the mom of a bald girl, I had horrible heartburn, was eating a banana almost every day at the time of conception, and I carried low (I am short, with fairly wide hips.) Fascinating! I have heard variations on the heartrate and carry position/belly shape as indicators of baby's sex but figured they didn't have much real value. I also have heard the full moon one (and people say it makes for busier hospitals in general, not just L&D) but the barometric pressure aspect of that is new to me. It makes a certain amount of sense that it could affect pregnant people too because I think almost everyone has heard stories about someone's knee aching when a storm is coming or an old injury site acting up predicting bad weather and that has been linked to barometric changes. Some of the tales just seem crazy and it's hard to imagine how people could ever believe that they held any truth (like the arms above your head one!) This was a really fun and interesting video. I love that science these days has the potential to properly explore accepted "wisdom" and find out if there really is anything to it. It's often surprising the cases where a correlation does appear.
@dr5213 жыл бұрын
There is some evidence that European Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) (basically elk) females in good condition (dominant females) are slightly more likely to have males. This is may be caused by the female’s uterus/hormones/something changing slightly allowing the male sperm to have a slight advantage compared to the female sperm. If I remember correctly, male and female sperm do better in slightly different acidity or something related. But essentially, better condition females are more likely to give birth to bigger, better condition calves. Producing a dominant male calf means he will outcompete other less quality males, so the mother will have more grandchildren. Females with worse body condition will produce slightly more females, because females are basically guaranteed reproduction, so if the calf isn’t going to be big, it’s better to be a female who will reproduce than a male who will never reproduce. But this is not well understood, and we don’t know the exact mechanisms yet. Hopefully my not great explanation makes some sense.
@ninaklishevich52803 жыл бұрын
I read a similar theory about human populations. That male fetuses need on average more nutrition than female fetuses. Or if said in another way - female fetuses can survive in worse conditions. As a result during the famines, the overall population would see increase in female births, and during abundant years on the contrary. Of course it is valid in large numbers of the whole population, rather than individual families

I have a question! My mother only has one ovary. Several years before she had me, she said that during work she felt something “slip out”, thought she had started her period, and when she went to the bathroom, she saw something gray and circular. She went to the hospital where they told her she was perfectly healthy, nothing was out of the ordinary, and that it was likely just a cyst. It wasn’t until years later that doctor’s told her (10 years AFTER I had been born) that she had only one ovary. This was because they had discovered she had uterine fibroids and during the process, also discovered the lonely ovary. I’ve tried googling to see if this exists but I can only find stuff about full-on uterine prolapse. I’m just curious if just ovaries can actually fall out of the body for whatever reason.

When I finally got the last call to come in at 7am the next morning, I said "For real this time?!?!" The person that called me had mentioned that full moons always do that in hospitals. LOL!

I was told if you count 22 weeks from when you very first feel the baby move, that will be the day the baby would be born. My own study of this was surprisingly accurate. Two different friends we tested it on were right on the date calculated from the first move. The other 5 or so, my daughter included, were within the week of the the “predicted” date. It’s fun to do, and very satisfying when it is right. 😁 P.S. Based on mine and my sister’s pregnancies, having “all day sickness” longer than the normal amount of time, means “it’s a girl”. 💖 Same with our nieces and friends. Yes I know it’s all coincidental, but interesting.

Hi how are you doing?
@sabiha.sayeed Жыл бұрын
It's because the baby's movement is felt by the mother at 16-22 weeks, so if you add 22 to that you basically get a full term baby.

Skunks are adorable how dare you 😭 HAVE YOU SEEN THEM WADDLE?!

Yeah, every living skunk I have seen is relatively cute. Now most possums are not so cute in my opinion.

I actually tracked my sleep for something like two years using the sleep cycle app. And consistently it showed I slept worse at particular moon phases. It wasn't the full moon, which might show that the increased light affected my sleep, but I found out my menstrual cycle was lined up with the phase of the moon and j always sleep worse during pms. Maybe the full moon thing isn't necessarily true, but maybe fertility cycles aligning with certain points in the moon cycle might make it seem that way? Much to think about tbh

So the story I always heard about my own birth was that I was born during a full moon and the L&D ward was packed. When I gave birth to my son, it was also during a full moon and the ward was packed. My mom came to visit and noticed it. I love this connection between our experiences!

I've heard that eggs actually release a chemical that attracts sperm; is it possible with the banana study that the increased potassium intake of the female partner might change the type of sperm (male vs female) that's attracted to the egg?
@mothgirl26173 жыл бұрын
that would be a cool study, but do sperms cells have any kind of different chemical attractions due to their sex?
@Elf03043 жыл бұрын
@@mothgirl2617 My theory, was, if there was any validity to it, was that diet may make it easier for certain sperms to travel to the egg.

Well, my mom was told I was "clearly a boy" from the shape/direction/height of her belly as she carried me. I'm certainly NOT a boy ... My hypothesis for people's certainty is that after multiple girls, the statistical probability that the fifth baby will be a boy was ... well ... tempting. Just not scientifically accurate. Those are fun, BTW.

My husband has said that our third kid will PROBABLY be a boy after two girls. I just smiled and said it's still 50/50~
@AwesomeCat20123 жыл бұрын
Actually, not long ago I read a study that statistically, if the first two babies are the same gender, the ones following will likely be that same gender... and the odds of that increase with each baby. So if baby 2 is a girl, odds are higher 3 will be, also. And then if 3 is also a girl, odds get even higher that 4 will be a girl, and so on. Now, I know 2 families who each had 3 girls, and baby 4 was a boy... so NOTHING is a guarantee. lol

@@AwesomeCat2012 True. And we probably proved it by my mom continuing to have even MORE girls after my birth, too! My cousin has 7 boys.

I go against science apparently. I had absolutely no heartburn during either of my pregnancies. Both my kids were born with a luscious locks of dark black hair. Especially my son, his hair was straight up and floofed in the wind.

I’m just here to say I love your nail color and you’re amazing 🥰🤍. I’m due in 3 weeks with my second and I’ve loved watching you constantly

Yes, I had wicked heartburn with all 3 of my pregnancies and all my babies had full heads of hair. While in the hospital I never worried I wouldn't know which baby was mine because of their hair!
