The statement, “Oh you look tired, the girl is stealing all of your beauty…” may not accurately predict the sex of your baby, but it often predicts that the person you’re talking to is an a-hole.

Unless you are offering to cook for them and do the dishes, then don't tell someone pregnant, that they look tired. That's being an idiot. And if they've given birth it means: I'm going to take care of your baby, while you take a shower, where you can actually wash your hair.

My wife was convinced that one of our twins was a boy and the other was a girl because one of them was so much more active and aggressive, sometimes kicking the other across her womb. She literally once felt one of them kick and then felt the other one get knocked against the opposite side of her abdomen. She said, out loud, "Baby A, don't kick your sister!" She wanted to be surprised about their sex. I didn't. So I already knew they were both girls. I just quietly chuckled to myself. Their personalities haven't changed in the 10 years since. The one who did that kicking is now a great soccer player. Scored 2 goals a few days ago. Her sister does dance. (Come to think of it, they were kicking each other a few hours ago...)

I have twin girls and one of them was always getting on her sister taking most of my belly space and I could feel it. When they were born, the quiet one has her ears folded and her foot rotated to the inside due to being squeezed all the time. Now they are 18 months old and the the first baby still wants to have all of me and doesn’t let her sister sit in my lap 😄

My mom used to teach 6th grade science. Every year, when she was teaching about moon phases, she would have her students figure out what the moon phase was on the day they were born, and then tally up the results to see if there was any truth to the full moon theory. She did this for at least ten years, and taught 6 classes a day with about 30 students in each class. The students were always spread evenly across the moon phases. For some reason, my mom took great delight in proving the full moon theory wrong. 😂

To be fair, her study doesn’t account for induction of labor/scheduled c-sections or how long the labor lasts. If a woman is in labor for 36 hours it may be in a different phase at that point. The full moon theory only talks about women going into labor naturally. As a labor and delivery nurse I will die on this hill forever like she says 😂😂

Now look at the lunar phase of the natal chart of the mother, a transit chart for the mother on the day of birth, and the progressed Moon aspects to the natal Moon in the mother's progressed chart. You can also look at Mars transits and Mars progressions. Mars rules bleeding in Astrology. The Moon rules the uterus and fluids. It's not as simple as looking for a full Moon in a natal chart of a child. You need to look at the mother's natal, transit and progressed chart as well.

Some of these old wives tales can be really damaging. After I miscarried, I had a coworker essentially blame me and say "I told you so" because I was still lifting boxes and putting my hands above my head at work, and they had warned me not to. That was devastating in my emotional state. I can now look back and know that my pregnancy was technically over by the time I found out about it. The OB had me wait 4 weeks to see them after I found out, estimating it would be at 10 weeks by then. There was only 5-6 weeks of fetal development, and no heartbeat. I couldn't have done anything.

My favourite myth is "bad eyes" - people belived that strangers can curse their babies by just looking at them. It actually might saved thousands of lives, because not letting strangers see your newborn prevented whatever bacteria/viruses/fungi they were carrying from spreading on said newborn (and it's underdeveloped immune system).

I think a lot of these old wives tales sadly come from wanting to blame the mother when there's an undesirable outcome 🙁
@hekkoCZ
@hekkoCZ 2 жыл бұрын
Or maybe from the other side - from trying to get more control. You can't really control a pregnancy, but you can stop from reaching above your head. Similarly you can't control a thunderstorm, but you can light a candle (in my country there was a tradition of lighting a special "thunder" candle to ward the house from being hit by a lightning; it didn't work but it gave people an illusion of doing something). I think a lot of superstitions come from trying to seize control over things people in the past didn't really understand, especially if they could harm them.

If it's not blaming the mother, it's blaming _something._ Possibly because people don't like being ignorant. In the absence of modern medicine, there's a LOT that people didn't understand and needed an explanation for. Technically, we're the same today even with modern medicine. Lots of us are looking for answers and there are plenty of people willing to either fabricate them or assert an explanation without realizing the flaws in their judgement.

I just thought it was because of all the myths, symbolism and association with the moon or moon deities symbolizing fertility and good harvest, so any moon worship, stories and folk tales would be passed down, but I can also see how full moons are much more memorable than crescent moons or new moon or half-moon or what have you xD

While stationed in Hawaii I heard of a tradition of a pregnant woman NOT being allowed to wear a closed or circular lei as there is a superstition that if a closed Lei is worn the baby will be strangled by the umbilical cord. So the lei would be worn with the ends dangling..not tied in a circle. Sometimes this will suffice as a pregnancy announcement!

When I was at the hospital in labor, one of the nurses told me that it was a full moon, and since nurses believe a full moon causes more cases of labor, many of them call in sick, leaving the facility short staffed. Just spitballing here, but when you mentioned that how many of them revolve around the child's sex was down to not having the technology we do now made me think of another potential contributing factor; a baby's sex was more important to people the further back we go - like how parents in many parts of the world would pray for boys and even kill non-male babies. In this scenario where you're more heavily invested in the sex from a personal and cultural standpoint it makes sense that people might come up with all kinds of incidental correlations they said would be predictive.

I had no idea that some of these are international, wow😅 Here are some more that i've heard growing up in Bosnia: 1- stepping over cords or hoes(garden ones lol) will cause umbilical cord to wrap around the baby at delivery (so specific😂) 2- cutting you hair while pregnant will make your baby less intelligent 3- petting an animal while pregnant will make your baby hairy (for example if you pet a cat's belly, your baby will have a hairy belly) 4- if you have a specific craving and you cant have it for whatever reason, if you touch your skin anywhere while craving that thing, your baby will be born with a birthmark on that place you touched and it will resemble your craving (shape and/or color wise) 5- if your baby is lying transverse in ur belly - its a girl, if its vertical - a boy 6- if your nipples turn darker during pregnancy - its a boy
@kataw0404

That one about the cravings, a friend's mother has the belief about the opposite. If you crave a food and don't get it, you'll have complications and might lose your baby. While she was pregnant with my friend she craved something but refused to eat it since it was expensive and not always yummy. Plus, she didn't believe her mother's superstition. She went into early labor and my friend nearly died. Each pregnancy after that she always caved to her cravings.

Yes, I also noticed that mamy of those tales are international. But I guess many of them came with immigrants from Europe. Maybe in other ethical communities those are different. And actually in Poland we have exactly the same superstitions. Few more of them are 1) Don't wear any necklaces or your baby will be strungled with umbilical cord or 2) When you get burnt (hot water, fire, whatever) or you get scared don't touch any part of your body (or at least not face or any visible part) as your baby will be born with birth mark at this place.

She was my smallest at 8lbs 1oz. Was told during my second I shouldn't be working I will hurt the baby and it would be small. 8lbs 9 oz, very healthy. Third one told I shouldn't exercise to much,my stomach muscles would crush the baby and restrict it's growth. Also told to put my arms down never reach over your head. I will strangle my baby. She was my biggest 10lbs 3oz. Luckily I only listened to my doctor and none of the unsolicited advice of strangers.

I had very uncomfortable heartburn with both of my pregnancies. My son was born with some hair but nothing luscious. My daughter was born… well, she was bald. It is funny!! My daughter was born in May of 2020, and I had HORRIBLE heartburn. My ob told me to take pepcid and I took it twice a day, every day. It wasn't perfect, but it took the edge off. However, around March of that year, zyrtec was recalled and then pepcid couldn't keep up with the new demand and it was impossible to find. It was SO bad, I begged everyone I knew to check their nearby drugstores and pharmacies for it. I told myself that well, at least she's going to have gorgeous hair!! My daughter was bald as a cue ball.

Just had my baby 2 weeks ago and for my entire pregnancy, my chest was on fire from heart burn to the point where it was interfering with my ability to do basic things. The ultrasound tech was actually able to show me his luscious locks while he was still in me and I was about 30 ish weeks pregnant. That still didn't quite prepare me for just how much hair he ended up having. He has a full head of super soft wavy/curly hair. We get compliments on it all the time. I, on the other hand, was bald until about 3. Now I have long, thick, curly hair that I seem to have passed on to my son.

When I was pregnant with my first baby, we didn’t find out what we were having. I was so so sick, and miserable the whole time, and all of the older women around me, and even strangers, were convinced I was having a girl because of the old wives tale that girls steal your beauty, and are more likely to make you sick. It was a boy, my second pregnancy was a breeze, and I never got sick once, it was a girl. My third I was sick and miserable again, and it was a boy, and this pregnancy that I’m currently in I’ve had a pretty easy time, only got a little sick in the very beginning, I just found out it’s a girl. I really think for me, my body is just super sensitive to the extra male hormones in my body for my boy pregnancies. My grandmother also got very upset with me in my first pregnancy because I continued my doctor approved work outs, she was sure the cord was going to get wrapped around the baby’s neck. I have heard so many old wives tales since I started having children, I couldn’t even tell you how many. There’s a lot of superstition around postpartum also, my elderly neighbor was very upset when she saw me outside on my front porch with my baby, and said that I wouldn’t heal right, and that women shouldn’t get out of bed for a month after having a baby.

People don't generally get the idea that a statistical difference that shows up in a large study doesn't lead to any real difference on an individual level. For MANY differences between the genders the differences between them are smaller than the variation within each gender, which means that you can't make any meaningful predictions about any individual person based on those statistical differences.

I'm a believer in the Moon myth. I was induced when I had my daughter. My induction was supposed to be 24 hours before I actually went in, because other women kept coming in to the hospital in labor. Every time a bed would open up, they would have to call me back & tell me to stay home because someone else had come in. There had been a Full Moon that night. When I finally got the last call to come in at 7am the next morning, I said "For real this time?!?!" The person that called me had mentioned that full moons always do that in hospitals. LOL!

I hate it when people say oh it's just severe morning sickness though. It's not, at all. Comparing morning sickness to HG is like comparing a gentle breeze to a hurricane. Too many women are left untreated or undertreated or feel they have no option but to end the pregnancy because of the severity of their symptoms, and so many end up repeatedly hospitalised or even on TPN because they can't even keep water down even with large doses of IV or subcutaneous antiemetics. It's horrible, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. People can, and have, died from this and it needs far more awareness (and the doctors need to stop relying on ketones to decide they need treatment, alone it's just an indication).

I was told if you count 22 weeks from when you very first feel the baby move, that will be the day the baby would be born. My own study of this was surprisingly accurate. Two different friends we tested it on were right on the date calculated from the first move. The other 5 or so, my daughter included, were within the week of the the “predicted” date. It’s fun to do, and very satisfying when it is right. 😁 P.S. Based on mine and my sister’s pregnancies, having “all day sickness” longer than the normal amount of time, means “it’s a girl”. 💖 Same with our nieces and friends. The barometric pressure idea is interesting. I have fibromyalgia and I guarantee you that I can feel even tiny changes in barometric pressure. To the extent that when I start to hurt more for seemingly no reason, the first thing I do is check the weather to see what changed. So it wouldn't surprise me if we first d hard proof that it affects pregnancy and birth. Yes, every OB doctor, nurse, and midwife I know preps for the full moon rush in births, but I've often wondered if the moon affected the way both they and the mums' reactions than it affected the actual birth rate. Maybe one day we'll find a definitive answer there too. Congrats on your millionth subscriber! I've recommended you to my daughter and my aunt, and will keep on passing your videos! Cheers.

My eldest wriggled around so much during my 12 week scan, the sonographer had trouble focussing on her. At some point during her months of wriggling, she managed to get the cord wrapped round her neck twice. In my case the nuchal cord was dangerous for her. Every contraction was putting strain on the cord, and her heart rate dropped by 50%. The decision was made for a c-sec as the baby was in distress. A few years later, I ended up talking to my aunt about it. She told me that they discovered my cousin had the cord round his neck three times during the delivery. She had to have an episiotomy so they could cut the cord, and allow safe delivery.

There is some evidence that European Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) (basically elk) females in good condition (dominant females) are slightly more likely to have males. This is may be caused by the female’s uterus/hormones/something changing slightly allowing the male sperm to have a slight advantage compared to the female sperm. If I remember correctly, male and female sperm do better in slightly different acidity or something related. But essentially, better condition females are more likely to give birth to bigger, better condition calves. Producing a dominant male calf means he will outcompete other less quality males, so the mother will have more grandchildren. Females with worse body condition will produce slightly more females, because females are basically guaranteed reproduction, so if the calf isn’t going to be big, it’s better to be a female who will reproduce than a male who will never reproduce. But this is not well understood, and we don’t know the exact mechanisms yet. Hopefully my not great explanation makes some sense.

I read a similar theory about human populations. That male fetuses need on average more nutrition than female fetuses. Or if said in another way - female fetuses can survive in worse conditions. As a result during the famines, the overall population would see increase in female births, and during abundant years on the contrary. Of course it is valid in large numbers of the whole population, rather than individual families

I love that you’re doing this video! My husband and I have been going through old wives tales just for fun, but it’s nice to know which ones actually have some validity to them. I’m super bummed about the heartburn one though! I was so hoping for my child to have my husbands curly hair! I’ll check back on all of these when they’re actually here. 😂

Well, my mom was told I was "clearly a boy" from the shape/direction/height of her belly as she carried me. I'm certainly NOT a boy ... My hypothesis for people's certainty is that after multiple girls, the statistical probability that the fifth baby will be a boy was ... well ... tempting. Just not scientifically accurate. Those are fun, BTW.

Actually, not long ago I read a study that statistically, if the first two babies are the same gender, the ones following will likely be that same gender... and the odds of that increase with each baby. So if baby 2 is a girl, odds are higher 3 will be, also. And then if 3 is also a girl, odds get even higher that 4 will be a girl, and so on. Now, I know 2 families who each had 3 girls, and baby 4 was a boy... so NOTHING is a guarantee. lol

My mum often tells me this story about how when she was pregnant, the aunt who lived in the same building as us came RUNNING downstairs telling my mum that an eclipse was going to take place. She advised my mum to stay inside and not look at the moon or sun because it could create a dark hair spot on her child. She proudly mentions that this is the reason I am "fair and beautiful" it just sounds like mumbojumbo to me.

Right before a big storm when the barometric pressure drops the number of reported deaths to our office goes down. Then after the storm has passed and pressure returns to normal we will get a slight surge, as if it needs to equal out.

Chinese Asian here! 🙋🏻‍♀️ 1. Confinement period is a big deal for after delivery. For a month after delivering, the mum is instructed to do nothing but rest and feed the baby. An elder lady or even (confinement) nanny will be around to care for the mum and baby. There’re extras thrown into the mix though: herbs, not allowed to shower, not allowed to drink water (only longan red date tea). Yep. For a whole month. 2. No cutting of anything on the bed during pregnancy, as it’s believed to hurt the baby/bring bad luck. Not sure if it’s true but.. why would anyone cut anything on their bed? 🤷🏻‍♀️

My son was born with a full head of gorgeous hair and none of that hair fell out like it does for most babies. I had hyperemesis gravidarum (extreme morning sickness) and GERD (the worst heartburn you can imagine). He was (and still is) so unbelievably, adorably, beautifully, handsome that it might just have been worth it, lol. Oh, and my hormone shakes after delivery were so bad that I looked like I belonged in a detox facility!

I had debilitating morning sickness the whole time I was pregnant all three times. 3 out of 3 babies with full heads of hair.. Also, I always knew the sex my baby would be. I just knew. Two times the ultrasound tech tried to tell me my girls were going to be boys. Man, if those techs could see those girls, now. Definitely female. It never occurred to me to pick out a boy's name for my girls or a girl's name for my son.

I knew I was pregnant before I took the test and it was basically the earliest day it would show up. Then I knew I she was a girl long before the ultrasound. And I told everyone for months she'd be early. She was 11 days early. One week before my OB was like "you've got 3 more weeks". I was just like, sure doc. She's gonna be here before that. Sometimes we just know. She was also born with a full head of hair and my heartburn was horrendous the whole time. It was honestly my worst "symptom". No nausea though.

I have a question! My mother only has one ovary. Several years before she had me, she said that during work she felt something “slip out”, thought she had started her period, and when she went to the bathroom, she saw something gray and circular. She went to the hospital where they told her she was perfectly healthy, nothing was out of the ordinary, and that it was likely just a cyst. It wasn’t until years later that doctor’s told her (10 years AFTER I had been born) that she had only one ovary. This was because they had discovered she had uterine fibroids and during the process, also discovered the lonely ovary. I’ve tried googling to see if this exists but I can only find stuff about full-on uterine prolapse. I’m just curious if just ovaries can actually fall out of the body for whatever reason.

While pregnant with our 1st kid, I did regularly go to a local clubhouse for young adults and older to keep socially active (new to the area and didn't know a soul beside husband and MIL). At the time when it was obvious I was pregnant the people at the clubhouse tried to guess the gender according to how my belly was shaped/'hanged'. One said if the belly is high, it's a girl; low, it's a boy - while at the same time another claimed the exact opposite: high = boy, low = girl 😅 Both were absolutely convinced their guess was correct 😂 I could only say "Yes," and let them argue about who was correct 😂

I always get a good laugh at these. As the mom of a bald girl, I had horrible heartburn, was eating a banana almost every day at the time of conception, and I carried low (I am short, with fairly wide hips.) Even ultrasound can be wrong, if it's done early in pregnancy or the baby is in a position that blocks a clear view.
