Hi, third degree burn victim here. For the people wondering why Vader didn’t just jump over or go around the fire when his suit is mostly fireproof, that trauma STAYS with you. I got burned in a water heater explosion at 8 years old, I’m 41 now, and even watching certain scenes of people being set ablaze can be too much sometimes. I actually had to pause this episode and get a glass of water after seeing Ben get dragged through the fire, so I have no problem believing that for all of the evil acts we just saw him commit, Vader also wants NOTHING to do with it. Yes he was obviously toying with him and was disappointed in the broken shell of a man Ben’s become, but even if he’d intended to finish the fight there (and he clearly didn’t, he one-handed him that whole damn fight) he still sent the expendable Stormtroopers to go near the flames to pick him up. Vader’s a lot of things, but immune to mental trauma he is not.

Ironically, his home base is Mustafar. Literally surrounded himself with the same lava that immolated him.
@thegreatjedi3092 жыл бұрын
Actually, Vader had overcome that trauma. In the comics he had fights on Mustafar against the natives while constructing his fortress, and at one point he and his army was practically flooded with lava. But he wasn't triggered. He just used the Force to create a bubble, swam through the lava, and continued fighting. This is the whole point of Vader as a Sith Lord. He has no fear. He IS fear. He is depressed af, but that hatred of himself is the very source of his dark strength. Vader has no qualms about wading through lava if that's what it takes, and that reignited blaze could've been easily put out by another blast of wind with the Force. But Vader wants to defeat Obi-Wan in a fair fight, just to prove that he is indeed superior. He finds no joy nor satisfaction in Obi-Wan in this present state.
@alexdeghost27292 жыл бұрын
The actual reason he let Obi Wan get away is because the comics establish that he only wants to throw himself at hardships that can match him in a fight and for years he’s been dreaming of fighting Master Obi Wan. Not this weak hermit. So he let his strength return.

"One of the themes throughout the films is that the Sith lords [sic], when they started out thousands of years ago, embraced the dark side. They were greedy and self-centered and they all wanted to take over, so they killed each other. Eventually, there was only one left, and that one took on an apprentice. And for thousands of years, the master would teach the apprentice, the master would die, the apprentice would then teach another apprentice, become the master, and so on. But there could never be any more than two of them, because if there were, they would try to get rid of the leader, which is exactly what Vader was trying to do, and that's exactly what the Emperor was trying to do. The Emperor was trying to get rid of Vader, and Vader was trying to get rid of the Emperor. And that is the antithesis of a symbiotic relationship, in which if you do that, you become cancer, and you eventually kill the host, and everything dies." ―George Lucas, on Darth Bane's role in the Sith backstory[34]

I like how Vader “matured” his rage. You can tell he’s absolutely seething, hungry to make his former master suffer. But he’s also disappointed in how Kenobi’s skills have deteriorated over the years, and wants to destroy Kenobi fair and square. We all know Vader coulda just taken him, but so does he. He wants Obi-Wan to get back to full strength so he can humiliate Obi-Wan, proving to himself and to his master that he is no longer the learner.
@madelinegarber78602 жыл бұрын
O totally. I agree. He wanted to test his strength and make him suffer both mentally and physically. He wanted him to fully appreciate what Obi Wan had done to him. It would’ve been too easy to just kill him outright like you said. He wanted to show him who he’s dealing with so he has a chance to get his shit together. Then destroy him utterly.

I was thinking back and it almost feels like this might be the first time Vader is truly the evil villain he was always thought of as. When we first see him he's kind of Tarkin's attack dog. Leia even says as much with the Tarkin holding Vader's leash line. The Imperial officers thin so little of him they make fun of the force within choking distance. Sure Vader shoots down some fighters but who hasn't in Star Wars? Then in Empire we get some Force choking but it was never really played as scary. There are times we even kind of want him to do so and it is played with a darkly comedic touch. It's not till Anakin kills the Tusken Raiders then the force kids who are unable to recognize a man who is clearly no longer on their side. During Rogue One Vader gets the biggest cheer of the movie when he has the most brutal hallway fight since Daredevil. This is the first time where he is killing people not because they have upset him or they have information or they are stopping him from retrieving information. Yes, it's likely he's hurting those people to draw Obi Wan out. Given what he does later, by which I mean both torturing Obi-Wan and stalking him like he's Michael Myers, it's almost certain he simply enjoys hurting people. He knew exactly where Obi Wan ( I should call him Ben since he doesn't go by Obi Wan anymore apparently) was hiding and could've just walked in. He could've called him out and said he was going to start hurting if Ben didn't show his face. Instead he pulled one guy through a window and hung him out to dry. Snapped the neck of the same guy's child which is all kinds of messed up. Then he drags a woman behind him for no other reason than he can. Except the other reason is he doesn't value life at all anymore and he's become so numb this is the only way he can feel anything. Or he now enjoys hurting others as some kind of retribution for the way he was left to die. Who really knows? All I know is there's more going on than trying to get Ben to walk through a door when I'm sure Vader could simply rip the entire front of the building off and have someone go grab him. As strange as it sounds I think this was needed. We should be scared of this guy. They were going for a more family friendly tone in all other Star Wars projects. Now that they can go more adult we're seeing the things that should've always been there from a character who has gone through what he has. Well done Obi Wan Kenobi people.

Makes sense now, when Vader says in a new hope “we meet again at last, the circle is now complete when I was with you I was but the learner now I am the master” goes to show they will most likely fight again on Mustafar and Obi wan will defeat Vader in some kind of way that will make Vader understand deep down he doesn’t know everything there is about the force and that Obi wan didn’t teach Anakin everything. idk. I think it's possible Obi will never truly fight Vader. In the original trilogy, he simply lets Vader strike him down. I do not have a problem with her character per se. And not what she gets to do, but how. Not getting punished by the grand inquisitor for continually refusing to follow orders. I am happily surprised by the show so far. The third sister character reminds me of some of the Sith from the later EU books, just ruthlessly blind aggression and ambition. The actress is doing a great job being counter a point to a broken Kenobi.

This. The Inquisitors are that regular type of Dark Jedi or petty Sith Lord that most non-saga Star Wars has always been full of - much the same as a dozen minor Imperial Remnant Warlords (including Snoke and Kylo), much the same as Malak, Sion and most of the TOR Sith, much the same as all the forgettable dark jedi who flit in and out of the story in the pre-empire and post-empire EU. Their position and influence is propped up by Sidious, Vader and the military might of the Empire - and yet for all that, those greater evils ultimately make plain how pathetic and petty their villainy is. That doesn't make them bad characters, just outclassed in both power, ambition and complexity of character by two of the greatest villains ever put to screen.

The fact the actress, Ingram, is getting such "attention" should say to the Star Wars fanatics who are taking this a bit too seriously...she's doing a damn GOOD job! A bull in a china shop is the perfect way to describe Reva....she's so focused on her ambition that she's not thinking about the consequences in the end.

That split second where she sees the Jedi symbol and almost touches it was absolutely killer. I feel bad for people who are missing out on her performance because they’ve already decided she’s a bad actor for playing an angry character as angry. In between that, her reaction to the death of the child, and her somehow knowing Vader’s true name, I don’t buy that she’s just an ambitious grunt who thinks Obi Wan will get her promoted. There’s something much deeper and more personal here, she blames Obi Wan for something.

It’s supposed to be depressing because Obi Wan himself is depressed and has been for a decade. He turned away from the force and lives with nothing but regrets. He’s on a journey both mentally, physically, and in regards to the Force, spiritually.

Freck and the stormtroopers seems to have a very friendly relationship. He's happy with their presence and offers them rides back to base, they seem to be on familiar terms with him and he goes directly to the authorities when something seems strange to him. Just normal everyday business in the galaxy, where everyone gets along, regardless of species.

"I don't know why Jedi don't use guns more often." In the novels (legends now), Luke does away with a lot of the arbitrary rules regarding age limits and how to dress, and what weapons they could use. He was like "if you're better with a blaster, use a blaster. If you're more effective with a crossbow, use a crossbow. If you're a traditionalist, cool."

I agree with your take on Reva. Ingram is doing a fantastic job portraying her character as the directors want the character portrayed. If we assume the Third Sister has heard the stories about the Second Sister it makes sense that Reva would not want to repeat those mistakes and it motivates her to be a go getter.

It speaks very well of the director - as well as the writers and other show-runners - of this series that they were able to infuse actual tension - genuine, nail-biting tension - into that fight scene with Obi Wan and Vader. I mean, we know neither of them are going to die now; we’ve seen both of their deaths, already. Yet, it was harrowing. When Vader put his lightsaber into the ground, I was like, “Wait, what? What is he doing?” The fire spreads across the ground in a wave. “WHAT IS HE DOING??” When Obi Wan falls into the flames, I was like, “Wait. No. They’re not going to let him burn are they? ARE THEY?” I mean, he didn’t seem scarred when we saw him with Luke in the first Star Wars movie, which I refuse to call “A New Hope” because I’m cranky, old and set in my ways. But who knows what the rest of him looked like underneath those robes? Maybe he did have permanent burns. That little Leia is doing an excellent job. I think Carrie Fisher would be proud. Lastly, you guys were talking about Darth Vader’s voice, done by none other than James Earl Jones. That’s what gets me about the twisted people giving Moses Ingram a hard time. What color do people think James Earl Jones is?! There have always been Black people in Star Wars because they’ve always had him. I mean, if you’re going to be racist, at least be consistent about it. Sheesh. I saw Moses Ingram in “The Queen’s Gambit” and she’s a good actress. I’m glad, as a Black woman myself, that she’s representing in the Star Wars galaxy. Hmm, well, maybe little girls shouldn’t exactly look up to her, considering her character, but they can look up to her as a person. So far, she seems to be forging a pretty bright career path.

Anyone else think Leia's speech to her cousin is actually foreshadowing Reva's whole deal? “You’re scared of him. You want him to like you so you repeat what he says. Even though you don’t really know what it means. You think being like him will make people frightened of you, but really, you’re the one who’s scared.” She certainly looked scared for a second when big V snapped that younglings neck in the street.

You two are my favorite reaction channel on all of KZbin! I looked forward to this one so much. Obi-Wan was weak because he cut himself off from using the force to hide himself, just like Luke did when he was on the island hiding. It's been 10 years since he used the force. He struggled to save Leia from falling off that rooftop. Vader has always had a give up attitude. He could have stopped the door from closing after he killed Obi-Wan in A New Hope, but he didn't. The fire was the same kind of Vader attitude. It's still a part of Anakin's fear of the sand, and how things didn't go according to plan to save his mother. He may be super powerful with the force, but he still has the same kind of attitude of Anakin alive in him.
