There’s some cool stuff but the only things I like, for the most part, are all superficial. The only time I enjoyed the actual writing was in episode 5 when the Anakin vs Kenobi flashbacks paralleled Vader being blindsided. Everything else was extremely mediocre or straight up trash. Not even the technical stuff lived up to what a multi-billion dollar company should be able to produce. Like you said, cinematography and choreography were lackluster.

I disagree that that Reva's character had "so much potential". I don't care if they improved the way her motivations are conveyed to us, her motivation sucks. She survives order 66 as a youngling so her plan is to join the empire to get close to Vader, committing countless atrocities in the process, hunt down one of the few Jedis left in the galaxy that could oppose the empire that you hate so much in order to get closer to Vader, committing countless more atrocities in the process, to then betray and kill Vader at the end for revenge. And in the end, we're supposed to relate or show sympathy for her just because she decided not to murder a ten year old boy? This is some Fire Emblem Fates Conquest level bullshit if anyone gets that obscure reference. She just flat out should never have been conceived as a character, she adds nothing to the Star Wars story except plot holes. None of this is the fault of the actor who I do share some sympathy for, but at the same time, I didn't think her acting was very good. She was constantly voice-cracking and squealing orders. I think it was poor casting, she commands no presence and isn't imposing in the slightest.

People are too nice about Reva’s writing. How is “the backbone” of her character written well? She wants revenge for her Jedi friends being killed, so she takes a job killing Jedi? That’s bizarre. I know she needed to get close to Vader but this is isn’t good writing, it’s just the first thing that came to the writer’s mind. And then the Luke part of her story is insane. Can anyone explain it??? Does she know he is Vaders son? Whether or not she does, what would killing Luke accomplish, particularly when it’s clear Vader doesn’t know he exists? She said it was for justice, lol. That’s like if someone ran over my cat, so in order to avenge her, I personally kill some random pets around the neighborhood.

A continuous theme in Star Wars is that being driven by rage, hatred, anger - essentially, the dark side, can give you power, but can make you fixate on a goal regardless of what you lose and who you hurt outside of that goal. Anakin shows this. Luke is goaded toward this but resists it. So this absolutely tracks for Reva. In her hatred of Vader, she could kill other jedi and do awful things because she just needed to kill him and avenge her fallen friends. I just wish they had introduced her character this way - instead of getting gut stabbed and then mysteriously finding her way into the Inquisition, why not have her show her anger at Vader killing her friends enough to harness some dark side power to deflect a blow by him? Then he pulls a Force Unleashed and takes her to be used for the Inquisition. Something like that. Totally agree regarding Luke, though. She should have just died in episode V and saved some screentime in VI. After losing utterly to him, she lets her anger go and comes back to the light, only to die. It would have been far more impactful.

I have a suspicion that when the writers finished their draft, they thought it was a sign of intelligence for them to break canon left and right, then do a bad patch job and say "Look how brilliant we are!". There's a saying in my country "Like rats fixing a pumpkin". The patch job for the mess *they made* actually made things worse. One must ask "What was the point of this story?" Was it for memberberries? Was it so the writers could make their mark on the Star Wars universe? Did the benefits outweigh the costs? The cost of cheapening mental trauma as a plot device subservient to the main plot, the cost of turning Darth Vader into a Bond villain, the cost of sending the message that forgiveness is cheap despite the crimes one has done, the cost of inadvertently turning Leia into a psychopath, the cost of diminishing the quality of writing because they know the fans would do the work for them with the smallest specks of content, etc. And the gains? A shoehorned redemption for Reva, a strange journey for Obi-Wan to get over his guilt in killing Anakin (even though that was not an impediment by the time blades were drawn on Mustafar), and a long-winded explanation of how Ben Solo got his namesake. And while Luke did not see lightsabers, didn't he remember the time he was chased by Reva (who is clearly NOT a Tusken Raider as his uncle said) and got pulled by some supernatural force? And how, after nine years, did he still have the gall to refer Ben as a crazy old hermit after that meeting? Reva's problem goes beyond late revelations of motivations. She lacks ambiguity. You can't make me sympathise with her just because her target was Darth Vader because, in the process of doing so, she does what Vader did to her in the Temple. Her turning point was when she was about to kill Luke. Okay, how many kids and Jedi fugitives has she hunted yet not trigger this epiphany? Why is Luke the trigger, and not the dozens of victims she has kill/capture for ten years? At best, she's what TvTropes calls a nominal hero, someone who acts so villainously that the only reason she's "heroic" is that she targets the bad guys. This is why her "redemption" is cheap. Not to mention that by Star Wars' own logic, her redemption is only complete through noble self-sacrifice. Oh and the massive heat on Obi-Wan and Bail generated from this plot dies off because Palpatine is jealous that Darth Vader is obsessed with Kenobi. The way that scene was presented is strange. I thought peace is a lie, there is only passion. So a burning passion for revenge fueling the Dark Side, coupled with the pragmatism of chasing one of the most powerful Jedi that could intensify the rebellion (remember the Empire knows about this network of rebels and Jedi underground), all that is insignificant because Palpatine is jelly he is not getting Vader's full attention. Not to mention the fact that there is strong circumstantial evidence that the Organas are traitors. Hell, that alone should have intensified surveillance. They could have gotten footage of Obi-Wan hugging Leia.
@christopherstein20242 жыл бұрын
Why did she even want to kill Luke? Because he was Vaders child? Really?

@@christopherstein2024 It is so unclear why Reva has gone to Tatooine. No part of Bail's message refers to Luke as Luke Skywalker. "The will to live" or more importantly "the will for revenge" is absolutely a thing in Star Wars as far as the Sith are concerned. One of the main antagonists in KOTOR 2 kept himself alive by the strength of his hatred, even though he had been struck down multiple times. Similarly, Anakin only survived on Mustafar despite his horrific injuries because his hatred would not allow him to die. Therefore, I can stomach why Grand Inquisitor and Reva both survived being impaled by a lightsabre. It's not the best but it's possible. However, after Reva decided that she wasn't going to be Darth Vader and let go of her hatred, she should have died. Thereby indicating that she had left behind "the will for revenge" and finally found peace.
@heresjonny6662 жыл бұрын
The thing is, the KOTOR 2 guy was seen as an enigma for his ability to keep himself alive via sheer rage. Anakin was the highest potential force user alive at the time, and so him being able to harness that power via rage to survive until Palpatine finds him is also passable. The grand inquisitor should've survived just because of his race - two stomachs meaning he could live. Reva is not powerful, nor an enigma. She should not have survived it. And the rage excuse doesn't wash for when she was a youngling given she wasn't a dark side user then. But above all that, it would have been so much more narratively powerful to have her just die vs Vader.

It was a wet fart of a finale overall and reek of cost cutting corners (reliant on close up shots and shaky cam to simulate tension visually, instead of writing/directing it better in the performances). The writer wrote him to be completely powerless, but when Bail asked him to rescue Leia... He said 'my duty is with the boy'.... Really? Let's say if there's an attack on Owen's farm, how could Obi-wan help them? He buried both lightsabers in the middle of the desert (which he magically founds them again after 10 years). He's got no gun, like no weapon at all (as we saw none in that man cave he's in). tbh It's just lazy writing and plot holes all around, just to cash grab the fans.

You can write Obi-Wan with depression, PTSD, survivor's guilt etc. But it needs to be addressed head on. Much like the scene with the homeless clone trooper, whatever mental illness Obi-Wan has is given only superficial focus. It is only there as instant angst generator linked to his power block. The writers only want quick emotional reactions without diving into the serious subject that cannot be resolved in a single step. Thus, Obi-Wan starts as a depressed bum with no explanation of what happened. He resolved it in 15 minutes in Eps 4. And a quick burst of Leia's memory resolved his "loss of confidence" in the final fight. Don't expect Lucasfilm writers or the fans to come to a group therapy session because these fools clearly do not want to stare into the abyss as the patients do.

Not only that, the writers of the show completely forgot about the existence of TIE fighters. They show them hang from the ceiling, yet are never launched when TWO BLOODY AIRSPEEDERS attack the base! And apparently Vader's star destroyer forgot to load any fighters before departure, too bad, they could have used them to CHASE DOWN THE TRANSPORT WITH NO HYPERDRIVE, which was apparently drifting lazily to the left well enough that like 40 turbolasers couldn't hit it, while the destroyer followed Obi-Wan.

This is a stupid comment sorry. 1. Reva goes after Luke to kill Luke to get back at Vader. She doesn’t know that he doesn’t know about him. 2. Let’s say the destroyer chased the rebel ship. Praising something like a brainless idiot is something that someone that wants you to remain mediocre would do. Keep doing what you do. YES! Disney has done a very poor job with probably the easiest series idea out there. An Obi-Wan Kenobi series should have been a no brainer. Just have Kenobi reflect on the past, have some flashbacks with Anakin that help us and him understand how he failed him and how Kenobi grows as a teacher so he can do a better job with Luke and have some action at a low level. If the series has to be 3 episodes, so be it. Oh, and one last thing: the series should have been about Obi-Wan Kenobi, not Reva (also, it doesn't make sense that Vader didn't kill someone who knew he is Anakin Skywalker immediately) or Leia. The one with the most amount of character development should be the one the series is named after and this was NOT the case. PS: you're totally right on the directing being mediocre. The shot of the final fight, for example, feel just random.

I have to disagree that it would be a no brainer to write this. This time period was pretty much complete with Obi-Wan being an old guy on Tatooine in 4 that didn't hear his name "in a looong time, a long time" and Vaders reaction to meeting his "master" again. So I always expected this to be kind of akward and they didn't change my mind. With the networking in Star Wars, it's something I have been frustated with for a long time. I used to partially blame Filoni for this, Ahsoka really is the Reva to Anakin if we are honest with ourselves and of course she also gets more screentime in the Mandalorian that most Mandalorians in the show. And nobody dies anymore. For me they already ruined it with Maul because that guy was more than dead in the film but seems like other fans are getting tired of it too.

Vader's mask getting damaged and the words shared between him and Obi-Wan has probably become one of my favorite scenes in all of Star Wars. Say what you want about the rest of the series, but this specific moment is perfectly written, directed, and acted. Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen have such good on-screen chemistry. Of course it's a good moment, you know why? Because it had been done before in rebels. Anything that is mildly good or entertaining in this show is either a call back to the OT/PT or just a total rip off of something that had been done in SW already. I couldn't even enjoy that scene to the fullest because it had been done much better before.

I think generally speaking, the show did a solid job at converting an emotionally-broken for years Obi Wan into a heart-filled, focused, and strong af Ben Kenobi (i.e. killing Maul in 3 moves, something you knew he couldn't do before isolation). However, as a viewer, I think Episodes 5 and 6 were really the ones that "filled" all my desires for the show. Honestly at the end of Episode 3 I was on a big low for thoughts on the directing, and the depiction of the other inquisitors plus the first vader fight was interest-killing for me. As the show progressed though I think it fixed itself with regards to Reva and Kenobi. If the series was instead a Movie as opposed to a TV series, and the filler Reva hunting scenes were cut down to one chase, everything would've panned out much better.
@fxbeliever1232 жыл бұрын
When the Grand Inquisitor says "the will to live" that was more so directed to Reva and why they kept her around; redirecting her anger for their purpose, than it is to explain his own survival - at least that's my takeaway.

Yeah I also think he got that wrong. Might have also been a reference to himself looking forward to his own revenge while he was injured. Also I don't think that she survived being stabbed twice, that seemed like a reveal of their inner feelings with Vader catching "the Youngling" in the end. Fight of the century..? 🤔 That's gotta be a joke right.. . Imo.. another illogical dimly lit, card board episode that seriously comes across as more of a PARODY of their better movie selves. Fight scene lacked a certain gravitas when instead it should have been super epic; was nowhere near the standard, for example of.. Maul vs Kenobi /Qui-Gon, ROTS, or any off the Vader duels from the Movies. Even the KZbin SC-38, lol, still appears far more thrilling and compelling. Vader's fight scenes work better in more enclosed/confined environments, like within a facility or on board a ship, as opposed to wide open, very dark spaces. In this episode, Vader appears relatively oddly under-powered, and ends up towards the end of confrontation, going from the powerful force wielding, dark Lord of the Sith.. literally single-handedly, manhandling entire spaceships; to simply getting beaten up, lol again, nerfed then ko'd initially by a few floating rocks🙄, that he seemingly now cannot pause/deflect, despite having kinda force paused a huge rock only a few moments earlier. . And, considering what a neck breaking, homicidal, galactical menace Vader is, would otherwise make no sense, that you'd then allow someone like that to live.. Lol, it's just written all wrong and they've done Vader character no favours here.. It's like Disney just throw all the right ingredients into a large pot but then fail to properly prepare ingredients or cook em right. And, let's not even get started lol on the shanked Reva, uniquely on this occasion, not even having the need to use, the over used lol, Bacta tank... Episode and whole show has been kinda off. Lacked movie quality /cinematography, poorly and inconsistently written, and looked like entire series had been filmed on a dimly lit theatre stage on an even tighter budget. Lol I even had to adjust the power saving settings on the ole tv box to high brightness 🔆. Maybe Kenobi and Vader are just not meant for TV, certainly not in the manner that Disney produce and write it anyway. Something tells me that maybe a Netflix would have done a far better job.. But I'm reaching and digress.. For me, episode was simply ok - ish in bits, underwhelming in parts, and nowhere near mind-blowing.. It'll be interesting how folks feel about this in a couple days time, once the dust settles and everyone's had a chance to digest.. 🤔 .

For me, the show lost most of my interest after episode 3. I did like the first 2 episodes, and I honestly thought it was a pretty interesting start of this story, but ultimately, After Leia got captured again, Darth letting Obi Wan go, even though it looked like it wasn't his intention and Reva teleporting from one side of the tunnel to the other was weird. I think if Leia was returned to Alderaan after epi 3 and they showed a more toying vader, it would have worked better. They could've focussed the rest of the story on Obi Wan trying to flee, while being chased by the empire. The setting of the fourth episode was great, but the visual effects, action, dumb moments and the bad story ruined it for me. Episode 5 was kind of fun, the action (except Reva vs Vader) was pretty bland, but the dumbest thing in this episode is the fact that Reva survived. If they had killed her off, they could've focussed the last episode entirely on Vader vs Obi Wan, but instead during the fun fight scenes, they went to the far dumber part of the story. Also why did Bail contact Obi about Luke and that he was going to tatooine to take care of the boy, but ultimately never showed up? Did he bail (pun intended) on the promise he himself made to Obi Wan??

When it comes to these key fight scenes idk why they always make them very dark and murky. From a directing perspective, all the shaky cam style cinematography really makes these scenes feel small. The lack of original score is absolutely the most infuriating thing for me because they used Duel of Fates in every single trailer but when it comes to the show we get this generic garbage (minus Kenobi’s theme). It just makes no sense because we’ve seen what the volume can do in Mando season 2 and Deborah has directed some really solid episodes but everything besides the acting feels low budget and they try to hide that with dark scenes and shaky cam. This is the one show you needed to feel like a movie and they did the opposite… Great to have Ewan and Hayden back tho, I hope we see them again!

They keep an even distance for about 15 minutes and don't get shot down, or have Tie Fighters launched against them. They have a damaged hyperdrvie, but actually have a escape craft with a hyperdrvie. Most likely a compatible one they could salvage for parts. They should not have written that the escape craft had a hyperdrvie because it should be an easy out. When Kenobi leaves the planet.. Have him steal parts, or the lambda class shuttle, then scuttle it.

I liked Episodes 5 and 6, when they actually started telling their story. I agree with everything pointed out in the video, but the biggest issue that I think contributed to my agitated sigh at the end of every episode before those last two is the structure of the show. If this show were a movie, the first act is Episode 1, the second half of the second act after the midpoint is Episode 5, and the third act is Episode 6. There's Episode 2, 3, and 4 all looping through the first half of the second act, each one starting over on a new planet and set piece. The plot barely feels like it's advancing, and spends three episodes undermining tension and trying the patience of viewers. The way it is, it goes back and forth in the rising tension: - Episode 2, Leia was captured and taken to an Imperial operated planet, Obi-Wan rescues her. - Episode 3, Obi-Wan is escorting Leia off planet, encounters Vader but escapes, Reva kidnaps Leia. - Episode 4, Leia was captured and taken to an isolated Imperial base, Obi-Wan rescues her. I think they did this to fit a structure of having each shocking revelation they had in store be at the end of an episode. They probably thought this would escalate the tension, but they stupidly centered the rising tension around the characters' safety, two characters we all know survive. - Episode 2, Ben finds out Vader is alive. - Episode 3, oh no, Reva captured Leia. Will the girl we know survives be okay? - Episode 4, oh no, Reva put a tracker on Leia's robot. Is the girl in danger? Again? - Episode 5, Reva finds a hologram conveniently detailing where to find Anakin's other child, who we know survives several movies and lives to be an old man. A better way, Episode 3 could easily have been split between Episodes 2 and 4: - Episode 2, have Ben rescue Leia and learn about Vader, take her where they're going, and end off with Vader approaching for a tease. - Episode 3, open with Vader approaching Kenobi, they fight, Ben loses, then he wakes up in a tank and goes after Leia and rescues her. The way I divvied it up, Episode 2 has a rescue, some character development, then a Vader tease. Balanced, ending with awareness of audience expectation. Then Episode 3 doesn't open with character development, it opens with action, it opens with Vader vs. Kenobi round two, then it goes on to a rescue mission. That way each episode gives a little of what we want, escalating the stakes of the actual story between Kenobi and Vader, giving each episode a satisfying step forward toward what people really wanted to see, a satisfying escalation of stakes until the story concludes the way we all expected it to. - Episode 2 with Vader hype. - Episode 3 with Vader action. - Episode 4 (Episode 5, as-is) with Vader hype. - Episode 5 (Episode 6, as-is) with Vader action. The structure made people feel like it was about Leia, trying to be "Logan" or "The Last of Us". It should have been structured around the thing they marketed it with: REMATCH. They told me I couldn't do a PowerPoint presentation in the KZbin comments.

One thing I think about is how art is supposed to evolve over time. It can grow more complex, nuanced, and heck, it can even change its own overall identity-especially if that was the original creator’s/creators’ intent. That doesn’t mean it will be good. What really bothers me is that most of the Star Wars content Disney puts out hits an uncanny valley of storytelling. With a few rare exceptions, new Star Wars content may look and even feel a bit like Star Wars, but it does not match up on any serious scrutiny. That isn’t even all about the story concepts themselves, rather the fact that Disney’s Star Wars seems like it’s made by a bunch of writers and creators who *cannot think critically* about how what they are putting on screen fits into the franchise-even if they are actually good at what they do. It doesn’t matter how simple or complicated a story is, but it needs to be *tight.* Disney Star Wars does not feel like an extension to an existing franchise. It feels like a completely different work-once that uses an existing collection of art, slaps on a bunch of poorly-made additions, and repurposes it to say something entirely new (and strange). This happened with the prequels too, but the prequels have had nearly *twenty years* to sit in the fans’ collective consciousness and be ridiculed, praised, ridiculed again, and eventually appreciated for their contributions to the IP. What does all of the Disney Star Wars stuff contribute to Star Wars as a whole? It’s honestly unclear at this point. Star Wars now has three eras of content that are all completely different in tone and storytelling approach: the Original Trilogy era, the Prequel Trilogy era, and the Disney era. The OT and Prequel eras are hard enough to reconcile together, but add in the DIsney era? I just don’t know what to think about Star Wars anymore.

terribly sorry, what justify reeva slaughtering and torturing ppl? DnD players know about being evil, and about motives of being evil and what reasonable to do. star wars became marvel. you dont know if someone will die even if you take their head off. Using leia for any case of the show? brainless. no idea whom gave the o.k. but the show has no connection to the original movies. as i keep saying, saving a show by using a few interesting ideas, and a few nice scene dont make a movie or a show. If someone new comes into the star wars and see this go back to the movies, nothing would make sense. the one whom made approved it, has no writers pride. making something believable inside the imaginary world, and that is a shame.

So Jedi are rock proof? I mean the jedi hit each other physically while fighting they all react so if they get hurt by a simple fist or push how can they withstand rocks and bulders hitting them? That killed it for me while Obi and Vader were fighting. Show was below mid for it being made by one of the biggest companies in the world.

I love how the "This Is AWESOME" segment has scenes for just Episode 6, if only the series was like this without the Young Leia and Foxxy Love Inquisitor stuff

I love the way everyone ignores the racist comments from Ingram herself. This show is horrific.

How tf you enjoy something that’s just whack, let’s say you support a sports team, would you enjoy watching them even if they fell under set expectations and just became mundane ? Or would you only expect the best and have be hopeful for your team ?

I believe the fundamental problem with the production of this series is that it isn't a movie, and it isn't truly an episodic TV show. It's somewhere in the middle. Kind of in the territory of a very long (aka Lord of the Rings) film. HOWEVER, it was not produced as a single, wholistic film. It was produced as a TV show. That means that each episode is handled separately. The writing, screenplay, directing, action choreography, etc, are taken care of by different crew in each episode. Of course there is some degree of overlap, but it explains why some aspects were so hit and miss. Even in a really good standard TV series you will have crap episodes. But because of the number of episodes (12-24 in just a single season) they are drowned out by the positive. In this series it was so short and "important" that a single bad filler episode, handled incompetently by screenplay writers and action choreographers / direction, can almost kill the entire thing.
