Don't worry, this completely boneheaded decision to leave Vader alive is counterbalanced by the inquisitors' even more ridiculous decision to leave Leia alone after the series ends instead of immediately taking her again to fish Kenobi out for a second time. Sure, Vader doesn't know about Leia, and Palpatine told him to stop pursuing Kenobi, but the inquisitors do, and it's their job to kill jedi. If you have no moral barriers to kidnapping children, like the inquisitors, and you could have a Jedi dead in just a couple days, why wouldn't you do it a second time? Maybe they don't do it immediately, I don't care. You can't tell me the inquisitors would wait any longer than a few days to kidnap Leia again, especially when all of them know that this would work because it worked so well for Reva the first time. You can be absolutely certain that they'd be all over this, given that they talked so often about being next in line to be the Grand Inquisitor. If you could walk up to Vader and say "yeah, I killed Kenobi", you'd probably become the Grand Inquisitor on the spot.

@Richard_Nickerson Жыл бұрын
@Ali Chaudhry So, you've decided to dig far deeper than this show ever indicated that it did on its own, created your own interpretation below the surface of the question, and feel that it's justified? Even in your scenario, then my initial question still remains: why didn't Obi-Wan say literally anything in response at all? Why is it impossible for your headcanon that Vader isn't strong enough to mask his intentions in that moment? It was also clearly a last second decision, and the Emperor has shown basically every time he uses Force lightning that he can't just stop it and seems pretty distracted. Also, the one good thing TLJ did was show that even extremely powerful Dark Side users can be tricked by their apprentices: Kylo Ren killing Snoke instead of Rey? Vader clearly made a super quick decision at the last second, and the Emperor was clearly distracted by his love of lightning torture. Also, we're basically constantly told that Vader is even stronger than the Emperor, so... 🤷‍♂️ I don't think you've thought this through as much as you think you have.

And on a final note, pay close attention to when the voice modulates between Hayden and James specifically when he says "I am not your failure, *Obi-Wan"* it's such a jarring shift that it could be written off as an editing mistake. But throughout the series Vader has only ever referred to Kenobi as Obi-Wan, and Master when he has the advantage. But in this particular scene it is clearly Obi-Wan talking to Anakin. I think Anakin was going to say "I am not your failure, master." But Vader interjected at the last moment to deny Obi-Wan as much closure as possible.

Is it really a coincidence that the best Star Wars stories that have come out of Disney so far have all NOT been directly connected to the Skywalker family? The Bad Batch, The Mandalorian, and Jedi Fallen Order. It's pretty clear that the writers just don't know how to make a cohesive story around the Skywalker family because their stories were already complete. But Disney is just too scared to step away from them because they are the characters the fans fell in love with. Hell, even the the things that don't directly require the Skywalker's involvement still have the Skywalker's in them at some point. JFO has the Vader scene at the end, Mando Season 2 has that Luke scene, which those are both amazing scenes, but it still proves that Disney just can't help but shoehorn the Skywalker's in. Anyways, sorry for the rant lol
@moscanaveia
@moscanaveia Жыл бұрын
Wow. JFO was Disney? Really? More like a studio subsidiary to Electronic Arts. Please. The Vader cameo at the end is perfect there, however. It shows neatly that, even after all he learned our big boy Cal is only a fruit fly in the food chain. It's also not shoehorned at all, Vader is ultimately the commander of the Inquisitors, and while hunting Cordova's holo-thing was Trilla's pet project, ultimately this is something Palpatine himself was thirsting for since thate Clone Wars arc centred around the same list of Force-sensitives. Vader's involvement was not at all unwarranted, especially as part of the climax. It is even foreshadowed by the Ninth Sister after her last fit of rage: You can't stop the Empire. Comparing it to Luke Deepfaker's unearned save of Din and his fellows who were neutered for the sake of fan service, is borderline sacrilegious to the excellent writing in JFO and the higher standard Mandalorian is capable of (as demonstrated by season one). To illustrate my point, in that Mandalorian season that is called Book of Boba Fett, writers undo the conclusion of Mandalorian S2 in a heartbeat.

"the writers just don't know how to make a cohesive story around the Skywalker family because their stories were already complete." Bingo. They are profiting off fan nostalgia, but there is no creative reason to do it (and there never was). You don't pick up a finished book, scratch out "the end," and keep writing. You can only make the story worse that way. But they had all this money invested in purchasing Star Wars, so of course they weren't going to leave it alone. The result was inevitable.

I think the show would have been better as a sort of monster of the week/slice of life deal, where instead of having one overarching mission in saving Leia, we instead have Obi-Wan going about living and surviving on Tatooine, protecting Luke while also coming to terms with the fact that the world he knew is gone.
@matthewmatthew981

My take was gonna be a high-stakes heist adventure right after the credits roll on episode 3, where right before/after dropping Luke off at the Lars, Obi wan goes back into the galaxy to erase all traces of his former identity. That way, Vader and Kenobi could have a rematch, but it wouldn't break with established canon because Vader wouldn't know he was fighting Obi Wan (who would be in disguise.) You could even play it up with Obi Wan needing to ensure he escapes Vader without blowing his cover, and then we would get some actual stakes. (And of course, Obi-wan would be trying to erase his previous identity to make sure the Empire could never discover him and Luke on Tattooine.)

Wouldn't surprise me. Alex Hirsch's S&P saga on Twitter is a shining example of how Disney shoots its creators in the foot whenever they want to make something great. I really didn’t like that they gave Reva a redemption arc. I’m so tired of the whole “I’m not bad anymore, so that makes everything I did okay!” And the fact that she does SO MUCH bad stuff, and dialogue that roots her motivation to make it unchanging, establishing her as a real villain, just adds even less sense to her realizing “damn, I shouldn’t kill this kid, I should stop being bad ig” like… you’ve already killed kids… you’ve already done SO MUCH WORSE. It felt so forced for fake tension because you KNOW Luke can’t die, so ofc she wasn’t going to kill him. I just wish the reason for it was better than what they gave. She should’ve been killed by either Obi Wan or Vader, hell, maybe even Owen. Keep your villain villainous, not redeemable, evil. It’s getting tired and predictable

It’s sad to see, because Star Wars already has probably the greatest irredeemable, fully evil villain of all time in Palpatine. They’ve proven that it works in this universe. I think more writers need to understand that having a tragic backstory doesn’t give a villain a free pass to redemption. Most villains are enhanced by having understandable, deep backstories that make you feel for them. It adds even more depth when you don’t go the predictable route, and you instead keep that villain evil. Them being redeemABLE does not mean they need to be redeemed. I think they did it pretty well with Maul. He had a very tragic backstory, being stolen from his home and essentially tortured by a psychopath his whole life until he was turned into a ruthless killer. But he never turned away from the dark- he was evil, he knew that, and he accepted it. When he died, he didn’t get redeemed, but he still had a powerful moment of peace with his greatest enemy. An acknowledgment that, if things had gone differently, they could’ve been friends. An acknowledgment that neither of them were the greatest villain in each other’s story. That should have been the direction they went with Reva’s death.

Hey, remember that one time they spent the first third of the arc establishing this character and their motivations, the second third questioning those motivations and ultimately succumbing to their base desires, and the last slowly realizing it was never worth it and defecting and spending half of that third making up for his mistakes and EARNING that redemption? Yeah, they don't do it like Zuko anymore.

I'm forever going to be salty about the fact that Andrew Stanton COULD have been who wrote the show FROM THE JUMP vs just episodes 5 and 6. Like why not just have him on FROM the get go Disney? You know his roster. He helped write a LOT of really iconic and memorable, and good Pixar movies, including as far back as Toy Story. Meanwhile Harold has little to no experience. And characters as nuanced as Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi DO NOT belong in the hands of someone with cursory knowledge of Star Wars....yet that is exactly what happened. And this is the result. And if you like the result that's fine. If you don't that's fine too. A true fan of SW, will let people air our their opinions, and not say "you're not a fan you're a hater" if they have an opinion that differs from yours. If you're going to brush off those of us who wanted something deeper with "well Star Wars is never meant to be deep" you need to go back and rewatch The Mandalorian, Rebels, Rogue One, Clone Wars, the prequels, The Force Awakens (a lot of people agree that it had a LOT of potential even the characters), and the original trilogy. We have gotten better SW content. So the consistency should be there; it's there with Marvel. A few duds sure, but in their roster, it's mostly wins. To see so many go "it's just silly space adventures" is just a tad concerning. Because that's how Disney is seeing Star Wars too. When all of us know, it can be something much more meaningful. When it HAS been much more meaningful. I hope things can get better. For everyone. Because we deserve it. Especially the ones who are just seeing this amazing galaxy far far away for the first time. edit - well phase 4 is kinda rocky and Love and Thunder is an L so maybe MCU isn't as consistent as I thought lol

It's so easy to do. Disney has all the components to deliver, they're just too lazy to assemble it. Disney does not write good stories, none of the people they hire are talented - let alone posessing the genius that is necessary to carry on the legacy of George Lucas and the team of other geniuses involved in the making of the OT and PT. Star Wars has always had deep meaning, it's supposed to be mythology. But something like the Lucas movies can only come from a time when pioneers existed in screenwriting, practical effects, sound design. When they were allowed to exist, and allowed to thrive. It could only exist at a time when you had fascinating old actors to bring on in roles that deliver iconic, small things like Sebastian Shaw's BEAUTIFUL performance as Vader at the end of ROTJ. I don't think it can be done in this country, with these legacy companies full of trust fund babies, nepotism hires and insipid yes-men. For all the things Feloni has done, he hasn't done them because he's particularly talented - he just tries to deliver when no one else cares. I think Deborah Chow comes closer to understanding what needs to be done in these projects, but in this series, she dropped the ball on the basics. Bad shots, bad sets, bad music, and a script that had zero business making it through to a final cut. Now, I'd prefer that to someone who might be better at those things but have zero idea how to make Star Wars work (JJ and Rian), but this is an IP that Disney cannot afford to lose to a slow death. I don't know what Disney's relationship with Joseph Kosinski is like, but he and Gore Verbinski are the only decent live action producers Disney could tap. Maybe Taika Watiti can do it, but he only a chance if Disney lets him do it. Disney needs to fire Patty Jenkins, shelf her project just so it doesn't do to Taika's what Solo did to the film that Kenobi should have been.

So clearly, Disney sees his talent with Marvel and said "hey what can you do with SW?" which that's great, but AGAIN SW isn't just silly space adventures and it's VERY different from Thor. The fact that Taika wants to step away from the Skywalker Saga is comforting, but I really would like to see some more content from that era. Shadow of the Sith was incredible, and I love how it ties things together for the ST. Seeing Anakin in full form even as a ghost is great. Maybe the future could be in books? Who knows. Reva was the character they wanted to write about, that's why she got so much focus even when it was a detriment to the story they were selling: the story of Kenobi and Leia. Ignore for a moment the horrible writing and directing that led to Ingram's below-par performance. This could have been two separate shows set at two very different times, or Reva could have been a legit villain rather than that nonsense they pulled in the final episode. Hell...split the show in two, have the Grand Inquisitor be the big villain of the Kenobi series with Vader looming behind him, set up Reva as a legitimately evil subordinate who is forced to question things but never fully redeemed., and then have HER story be a separate miniseries that takes place right after the Battle of Endor. Or save her redemption for an encounter in the Ahsoka series as both she and Phoenix Squadron hated the Grand Inquisitor. Her backstory is revealed then and only then, and her return to the light is earned fighting Thrawn and saving Ezra or whatever the plot of that show is going to be. ALL of this would be more satisfying than what we got...but their priorities were on rushing Reva out as a character in the spotlight before anyone got the chance to like her, which was derailed by her being made so unlikeable by the script and direction. And then keeping her alive was to allow more merchandising off of her in follow-up stories. Counting their younglings before they get slaughtered, as it were.

I think it was perfect as is. This is Obi-wan's arc. He couldn't commune with Qui-gon because of the trauma he experienced at the end of the Clone Wars (and that's why he also sucks and fumbles a lot with his laser sword - intentional jab - at the beginning of the show), and him only really being able to reconnect fully with the Force by coming to terms with his past was a very nice touch for his character. Having Qui-boi show up and fish him out of trouble would cheat that moment out of him. If you ask me, we have seen too few Jedi ascension moments. We never see Obi-wan transcend his failings and truly earning the title of Jedi Master. Until now.

The assumption I got regarding Reva's resentment of Obi-Wan was because he was Anakin's master. It's like when people look at young people who go off and commit really horrendous crimes, and they ask, "Where were the parents? Why didn't they stop this?" We as a society tend to assign partial blame for the crimes to the parents and their assumed failure, even when the person who committed the crime is technically an adult who's responsible for their own actions.

And Obi Wan going to Utapau to kill Grievous was the catalyst for Order 66; Palpatine had to separate him from Anakin and so then leaked the info of where the general of the war is at. The Council pounced on it, and it was a secret mission that culminated into a big battle. Remember, Obi Wan went there first, alone without Cody or the 212th. He was set to engage Grievous alone in an assassination mission and then the battle was to distract his forces. Reva as a youngling wouldn’t have ANY idea about ANY of this, she just knew Obi Wan was always with Anakin and they were very close

Kenobi, to me, feels like a show full of amazing moments and amazing performances. It's just that to get to some of those parts, you kinda have to sacrifice logical and cohesive side of things. For example, Reva getting closure is an awesome moment for her character and true to her arc but you have to jump through all of these logical leaps to get there. So many contrivances to get her to that point. After Episode 4, I learned to live with the directing and writing quirks and to just enjoy the excellent acting and great scenes that it had to offer. It's not amazing but it's not downright awful. It was a fun ride, but it definitely had it's bumps

My entire view of Star Wars just got turned on it’s head. I always thought of Obi-Wan as Anakin’s Father figure. Like the guy who raised him but I’m only now realizing they really were brothers. Qui-Gon was Anakin’s real Father figure. He saved him from slavery and brought him to the Jedi Order and fought for him to be trained as a Jedi. And it was only because it was Qui Gin’s dying wish that Anakin he trained that the dogmatic Jedi Council allowed it. Without Qui Gon Anakin would not have been trained as a Jedi and the Jedi literally would have just thrown him back into slavery without a second thought. But with Qui Gon dead the young Obi-Wan must fill a role that he is not prepared for. Literally the day after he becomes a Jedi Knight he must now raise his younger Brother as his own. It makes that line “You were my Brother Anakin, I loved you.” Even more powerful and makes Obi-Wan Luke’s Uncle rather than Grandfather. This also give’s Luke a real juxtaposition between his two Uncle’s with Uncle Owen not wanting him to get involved in the war and ignore the Empire while Uncle Obi-Wan wants him to fulfill his destiny and take his Father’s light saber as his own. Anyway my entire view of Star Wars just got flipped on its head and I just wanted to share that

It seems very apparent that this project was intended to be a movie and Disney forced the issue of making it a 6-episode series to fit their content model. Episode 1-4 were stretched so thin for content it was comical, and all of the actual meat of the story was reserved for 5 & 6. Also, what the hell was the cinematography of this show? The shaky cam drove me insane. Watching this show was like trying to make conversation with someone who refuses to make eye contact with you. Just establish your shot and film it! Use lighting and color to make it visually interesting! This entire show felt like a muddled gray/brown sludge visually. I was actually really excited for Deborah Chow to direct this show considering her past work, and I’m not sure if it’s on her or the constraints Disney gave her, but the show is visually terrible and does not feel like a Star Wars project at all.

This show also failed to establish how the heck Reva’s plans would have ever been able to have worked. Somehow and for some reason the archives listed that Kenobi has a connection with the Organa’s, and dating 10 years after Order 66 and the fall of the Jedi, her plan literally requires Obi Wan to live, for Bail Organa to not send an army of people to search for Leia, for him to specifically contact Kenobi, and that finding Kenobi would promote her to Grand Inquisitor over the actual Grand Inquisitor. Being cunning and resourceful is all well and good (if you can call this plan smart), but the Grand Inquisitor is also Cunning and Resourceful. Reva is literally listed as the weakest Inquisitor by ALL of her peers. Her plan isn’t a plan, its loosely strung up ideas that need an entire handful of coincidences to line up and happen perfectly, only to get slightly closer to Vader … despite already being an Inquisitor. Despite knowing Vader and Obi Wan live, she would have never been strong enough to have ever taken on a two of the strongest Jedi/Force Sensitives to have ever lived

I think the big issue is that Disney is relying way too heavily on nostalgia with Star Wars especially. Kenobi was pretty good but honestly I just want them to do something new. The reason Mando season 1 was so good is because we got to get to know a new character. What’s sad about Star Wars nowadays for me is that, before the buyout, everything was made based of passion. The OT and prequels were made out of passion, and clone wars was made to show that passion by realizing George’s vision. Nowadays, there still is passion, but it’s no longer the driving force of the franchise, at least for the mouse. George never cared about reviews when it came to the clone wars series, giving it an above average budget and letting Dave and his team fix their mistakes and improve characters without him having to butt in, he was only there for consultation. And now, as shown with their recent shows, the mouse has no passion for Star Wars, their passion is on the revenue it makes.

I think this is whitewashing pre-Disney Star Wars. It has been about money and merchandise from the very start, but definitely from ROTJ onwards. @@DrPOP-jp7eb That's the thing though. The prequels weren't bad due to a lack of effort. Those movies are almost obsessively detailed. I mean, you only have to watch the first minutes on Tatooine in Episode 1 to know everyone who worked on it put an astronomical amount of effort in to have substance. I don't know what you mean specifically by bad production, but the production values in specific are sky-high - if anything, it's just too clean, but that's probably an aesthetic choice driven by retro sci-fi. The prequels flopped in execution, because Lucas needs an editor to be a competent filmmaker and some of his sensibilities were absurdly dated when the movies were new (the old timey, not malicious but very stupid racist tropes - and the stiff dialogue, which he intentionally patterned after the clunky old sci-fi action movies of his youth) - but they were never, ever lazy. They had a vision and a clear theme and narrative trajectory. Lucas knew exactly what he wanted, and tripped over every Lego in the box on the way there, but damned if he didn't somehow end up at the exact finish line he was aiming for.

I'm going to say it, and it has nothing to do with racism. I don't like what they did with Reva. It's all in the writing here and how often they make her shout. Reva to me was terrifying when she was quiet; when she was like a predator waiting in ambush, it was the little things about her that I liked. I had a feeling she was going to have a tragic backstory, but I am just so sick and tired of female villains not really being villains. I would have loved to see Reva as a full villain, but a quiet villain. I could have sworn that her backstory was going to be that Vader made her kill her friends to save herself, and that she was gunning to be his apprentice because he spared her, and that she actually began enjoying the terrible things she did, the power it gave her. Here's the thing about people with power; they don't need to flaunt it. That's why a quiet villain is so scary, they don't need to shout to be intimidating. Vader not even bothering to use a lightsaber against her at first and then tossing her saber back to her is a brilliant example of this concept. He doesn't need to work to beat her, because he is that good. Now I can make the argument that the character is trying to be tough and scary because in reality she isn't given what they do with her at the end, but even so, I'm annoyed at how often Hollywood will not allow a woman to be a full on villain. Wanda in the Doctor Strange movie is the exception to this and I think the example of how to do this right. You feel sorry for her and understand where she's coming from, but she is still a villain. I want more female villains who are legitimate villains

I disagree. The character was terrible all around and the performance was just plain bad.

After seeing the first two episodes, I assumed what I thought Reva’s motivations were, that she was hurt by Vader in the past and so she joined the inquisitors and sought Kenobi to get close to Vader to get revenge, not caring who she hurts along the way. The way she came across as antagonistic and insubordinate to her fellow inquisitors (hiding something), how infatuated she was with Kenobi in particular, and the fact that leftists cannot in their good conscience actually allow a black female character to be legitimately evil (only white men can be legitimately evil) seemed to lead to this conclusion. Lo and behold that was predictable.

During the ad read, I'm not sure if this was on purpose or not, but it's great framing that at 6:26 "giant shiny coconut crab" gets cut off

5:20 The shaky cam was so disorienting it was just disctracting. I literally said while watching these scenes, "Why is the camera shaking so much?". It ruined what little immersion I had in this show

One of the biggest problems I had is Vader left that girl alive, so she could accidentally discover Luke, and go to kill him- for 1, no, you should be dead, right? And 2, a big part of Hope was that Luke was turned off from the force, on a planet where nothing happens. OH but when he was ten a random sith lady came to kill him, but he had no question as to why, and just went on living as a pouty farmer for 8 more years like nothing ever happened.
