Little things like this show a lot of character and insight that was lacking in some movies. Obi-Wan did the best he could but on a deep level he knew he wasn’t ready to train a padawan much less someone like Anakin. The fact he feels he should have died on Naboo at Maul’s hand is telling it shows he accepts fault for not being what Anakin needed and that if Qui-Gon lived his master could have prevented all this. It adds more validity to Qui-Gon being the master Anakin needed.

Obi Wan might not have been the father Anakin needed. But on the other hand Anakin was not in the least bit ready to be a Jedi Master. He was all to willing to bow down when he thought he would save Padme. Instead he lost everything. His wife friends children and most of all his self respect. I just feel.bad that Obi Wan had witness his friends fall

Obi-wan should've known that he lost Anakin way before either his fight with Darth Maul or the Battle of Geonosis. When Anakin heard Obi-wan say to Qui-Gon that "the boy is dangerous", Obi-wan unknowingly broke Anakin's trust in him and planted seeds of hatred that he will have towards him. Both Obi-wan and Yoda should've also known that making Anakin spy on Palpatine would backfire on them because they foolishly handed him over to the Sith in the process.

Good point. Another example of the Jedi teachings being all over the road was Obi-Wan's comment to Anakin in Revenge of the Sith: "Only a Sith deals in absolutes", which in itself is an absolute.

Anakin was weak and the emperor knew it. His self centered actions and his own choice brought him everything he deserved. Obi Wan being blamed for not killing Anakin is just a deflection from the fact that as a Jedi, he could not kill an innocent man. The blame for all the tragedy in the universe was squarely on the emperor and Anakin…..no one else.

Anakin's faults were his own, yes. But the Jedi Order was complacent, arrogant, dogmatic and didn't have much of a moral high ground to stand on compared to the Sith. Even without Anakin, Sidious would have gotten rid of the Jedi. And that would have been their own fault too.
