Thank you so much, I have read it in my textbook, attended the class lecture on it, and reviewed my professor's PowerPoint over and over. Because of you I FINALLY feel like I understand. It might be the culmination of all the studying but this is where the lightbulb lit

If you don’t “gravitate” toward the familiar is possible you “create” the familiar? Like if in the example he had a good loving partner he felt anxious so he took steps to change the dynamic between the two of them to make it more familiar for him?

Thank you. This is certainly good enough. I have had trouble understanding the concept 'object' in this context. I hope to see more good enough videos from this channel. 🇲🇾

Thank you so much for this well-explained video. I could not wrap my mind around Object Relations theory in relation to the enneagram. This is helping me to understand it better along with its implications. Thanks so much!

So that would explain the rigid and strict way we interact with people-we,love people,but we hate some kind of people,although there is no real reason for it.

5:29 wasn't it Virginia Satir that said this?

Yes, even in Dr. Bruce Perry's book, he gives credit to someone else for that quote. I think it was Virginia Satir.

Would be interested to know how can that person change....now that the abusive pattern is gone, how healthy relationship will look like?
@goodenoughpsychiatrist
@goodenoughpsychiatrist 2 жыл бұрын
That is an excellent question. In my opinion, a healthy relationship is defined by what IS NOT rather than what IS. In other words, building a healthy relationship is a journey, not a destination. For instance, as you start noticing your current relationship pattern is not healthy, you may try to move away from that type of negative relationship pattern. Through this journey, you may continuously discover and update what you want in a "healthy" relationship.

I have been reviewing key psychodynamic theories and for some reason, this one just doesn't click..... I know this theory turns the single person psychology into a 2 person psychology focusing on relationships with "objects". But how does this differ from attachment theory? also, is the depressed position and paranoid schitzoid related to this? Thank!
@goodenoughpsychiatrist
@goodenoughpsychiatrist 5 ай бұрын
my apologies for the late reply. I think similarly as you in that both object relations theory and attachment theory talk about interpsychic realm rather than intrapsychic. But, I do think they are distinct. Attachment theory adds a unique layer of biological drive infants have to attach to caregivers while object relations theory discusses the internalized representations of relational landscapes. Of course, the two theories complement each other. I hope it is helpful.

Great video....but just for clarification, that quote about people who prefer the certainty of misery was actually NOT by Dr. Bruce Perry. Even in his book, he gives credit for that quote to someone else. I believe the original quote came from the late great family therapist Virginia Satir.

Hello, there is no good book for the general public for the object relations theory. But, “Essential Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: An Acquired Art” by Teri Quatman is a great intro book for anyone interested in this type of therapy.
