They use good quality ink at the Royal Society. Those old signatures have not turned red, as happens when the black iron compounds of cheaper inks oxidize to rust with time.

I can't tell if the inks just aren't iron-gall, or if they've gone to great effort to preserve the paper. It's obviously not flimsy paper, but iron-gall inks would still eat through untreated paper after a couple hundred years. Looks like they still use flexy-nibbed dip pens, given the inkblort incidents.
