Thank You DTG! i definatly tried my best to give the most compelling story with what infomation i could find, but the reality is that betheasda just didnt create the Ordiil family to be anything out of the ordinary. Or at least, that i could find.

I've gotten chillrend at level one before, and the effect is only five Frost damage with 10% weakness to frost for 20 seconds, but I learned since the frost damage weakness lasts 20 seconds if you keep hitting them consecutively before the 20 seconds is up on the first attack the weakness stacks, so even the weakest version of chillrend still chews through health.

I was performing quest for Dark Brotherhood. I saved a man from ghosts.The man who I saved, started speaking with this old man about the goblins in the field. Thats how started this quest. It was awesome.

The two easiest ways for a low power character to save both brothers is to either do the quest when you have Martin and Joeffrey following you, or when the two Jemane brothers are following you. If you wait until level 25 to talk to the old man you get the strongest version of the sword and it is actually the most powerful sword in the game by one point. But you can get Goldbrand five levels earlier (the second most powerful sword) plus, all of the leveled undead at upper levels havebig frost resistance, while only the fairly wimpy O-gate dremora are leveled and resist fire.

+Typhotix thank you! Chillrend is the highest damage per hit sword in the base game. (No DLC). But the other factors weigh in as well. For it to be this strong you need to be level 25. And the enchantment doesn't last long, like most swords. Personally I think umbra is the best sword in the game, it has the highest damage with no enchantments, but because it has a soul trap effect you can pair with azura star and power all your other weapons, including chillrend allowing you to rip through daedra gates, cables and dungeons.

What do you do if you fail to keep the two brothers alive and you still want the sword? I heard a rumor that you can kill valus Odiil and take it from him so I killed him and he did not have the sword on his corpse or anywhere in his house. I really want that sword and need it to get through the oblivion gates please tell me how to get it if I couldn't keep the brothers alive and I stupidly saved after completing the mission

If you’re still interested just get umbra and look up a tutorial because umbra is the strongest one handed weapon you can obtain in oblivion you could also use it to get chillrend because umbra is extremely powerful if you’re still playing oblivion this will help

crap...did this quest last night, didn't realise that both sons needed to survive...so no chillrend for me...in fact, got fuck all reward for clearing the goblins...pretty pissed with this quest.
