Something that few people realize is the fact that Fleabag can see the priest's fox and the priest can break her fourth wall is them breaking down each other's defense mechanisms and actually seeing each other. What I love about fleabag and the priest is they are perfect for each other when they met but would be terrible for each other long term. He uses priesthood to keep people at arms length, and she uses sex to keep people at arms length. Through season 1 we see her get absolutely railed all the time but she's rarely interacting with the person she's sleeping with she's interacting with us, in contrast when she sleeps with the priest she slaps the camera away. it is finally an intimate private moment and she doesn't want the audience involved. In contrast the priest tries to keep her at arms length in the confessional where people open up to him but he doesn't have to be open himself, theres a literal wall between them but she knocks down that wall by actually opening up emotionally and he ... well we know.
