What a beauty. I think the PS series are the only polysynths with a patch panel? Certainly from the 70s. Very unique instrument.

The ps3000 series is my favorite out of the pre prophet polys out there. Nothing sings like those resonators.

Thank you for this video. I'd never heard of the PS3100 but always wondered if there was a polyphonic version of the the ms20.

I need a reissue. That sounds gorgeous and I like to play the occasional 12 note chord with massive amounts of attack and release. Volca PS3100 anyone? 🤣

I’ve never understood how patching works on these synths. A patch cord only transports signal for a single voice - how does this work in a polyphonic context?
@naturarum

all voices have the same parameters!
@Samplers

I get that it's not multitimbral - but that's not what I'm getting at. Patch cords don't normally set "parameters" but are part of the voice architecture, in circuit, carrying audio and control signals. As far as I can tell the synth is not paraphonic but a complete synth for each key. How does the modular routing work when the patch cords are only two conductor cables? You'd need 48 way TRRRRRRRRRRS connectors to make this work like a normal modular synth. Even if the patch cords just make connections in a routing/switching mechanism you'd need a pretty crazy routing matrix to make it work. Is that how it works?

@@SamplersThe patch bay is only for the control voltage, you can't change the signal path.

It looks like you can only patch modulation, which will be monophonic and applied across all voices equally (many polysynths have a single LFO for all voices). There's some unconventional patch points; I assume Attack and Release will modify those envelope parameters for every voice but it doesn't let you actually patch in an envelope itself.

Today we differentiate between paraphonic and polyphonic. paraphonic is basically a monosynth that can play multiple different notes while a truly polyphonic synth is capable of modulating each synth voice differently.
