On the subject of temperaments, it has always impressed me that Korg still implement temperaments in modern digital synths. My Z1 and Radias both (if my ancient brain remembers correctly) have custom temperaments. If you want to know what the fuss is about, try using Pure Major and play some Major triads - it sounds so so sweet! Once you've heard that, you'll realise how dirty the equal temperament major is. If you've got a Korg with custom temperaments, you owe it to yourself to try them out.

Yes, Alex - we indeed achieved those lush synth-arrangements by the mid-80s… What we really struggled to do, was capable sequenced drums (drummers didn’t apply for a while…), you know just before the S-900 made multi sampling “cheap” enough. A Linn, Synclavier or Fairlight made it happen for the big ticket heroes, sure. So, I wasn’t able to use such high-end gear until ‘88, in London’s Advision and Nomis studios. No big ticket for us, though…😅 Funny enough, I didn’t know about the PS-3300, although all my “heroes” had independently used them. How that could be, after reading 100’s of Studio Magazine and SoS back then is a conundrum… As always, huge thanks for sharing…! 👍

“Good luck, buddy. I’ve been barking up that tree for seventeen years!” - Peter Griffin Roland seems the only company too obtuse to put out authentic analogue re-releases. They have completely missed the boat, while Sequential has done the Prophet 5/10; Oberheim a board that covers the OB-X, Xa, 8 and SEM box; Korg has done this, the 700, the MS-20 as well as ARP’s Odyssey and 2600; Moog has done their full modular 10, 15 and 55 as well as the MiniMoog model D…and now the whole phase of analogue revival seems to be winding down and Roland did…emulation VSTs in a box, and even poisoned that concept more by trying to make it a subscription model. You never have to worry about renewing a bloody sub on a dedicated analogue synth.

Fantastic demo Alex. I was hoping it would wind up in your hands to at least test out. As far as famous users go I think the French 70s band "Space" needs an honorable mention here. You can see the 3300 in the video for "just blue" (along with a ton of other Korg gear) and I have a feeling it's the main synth on the first couple of albums, despite them doing publicity shots with a lot of Moogs.
@AlexBallMusicАй бұрын

Just because synth x is in the video, it does not mean that it was used for the recording unfortunately. Vintage Top Of The Pops clips are notable for this, with just 'a synth' being rented from Maurice Plaquet substituting.

@@baward In this case you can see a small picture of the PS3300 in the liner notes, there's a shot of the studio there. Along with Marouani saying they used a "Korg synth". @DestroyER82Ай бұрын
Unsure if they used it in same fashion in reissue as well.. But its even more freaking cool than people even know, because the resonators (and not only them) are actually not voltage controlled, they are LIGHT!! controlled (using a light sources and photoresistors!). Master oscilator and divide down are quite interesting choice, because they knew well how to make VCO's (Korg monosynths) and for example PE-1000 had discrete oscilator per key. I guess it was tradeoff for them being actually able to fit it all into that case as well as not really worrying about possible oscilator drifting when all that stacked up electronics got heated up. Fascinating technology, 70's synths, best synths. ;-) THank you for showcasing, all the best!
@AlexBallMusicАй бұрын

Johannes Schmoelling borrowed Edgar Froese 's PS-3300 when he auditioned for Tangerine Dream. He used Oliver Grall's PS on the album Iconic with his band SAW, whom I will be watching playing live tomorrow. Space used one. The French band Lightwave has one. The Spanish musician Rafael Saez has both a 3300 and a 3200. Hans Zimmer has had one for a long time. The fact RDJ had 3 is just wild. I believe there is a tuning mode on the prophet 5 where you can you panel controls to alter temperament but it’s annoying to do and I love that this instrument invites that. Just love the format of this machine. Feels like korg need to release a eurorack resonator for sure. It would be excellent if they released a euro format step Down poly oscillator actually. This is something that’s not easy to find. I guess for it to be useful it would need a fair bit of extra stuff and would end up being a big module but.. a taste of the 3300 for a bigger audience perhaps ? Great video as always !!
@AlexBallMusicАй бұрын
Yo! Yeah, good point. Lots of component bits could be split out into discrete modules. The Ryk 175 is a similar concept to the resonators and I think they did a Eurorack version, if I remember right.

I'm hacking a Bolina...when my warranty runs out (gives me plenty of time to figure it out haha). But, a Bolina is an enormous Eurorack module, and it's genuine divide down. I want to send the notes through the voices on an analogue poly to do the divide down through subractive thing. I think the raw note could be tapped before the filter circuit in the Bolina to send the note through the voice on the analog poly playing the same note. Maybe an arduino to interface.

I love the audio rate FM with per semitone tuning. Also love these explorations of vintage gear interspersed with actual performances.
