Such valuable insights Stephen. I have noticed how since I started drawing regularly, and my drawing observation grows, it has started to influence my 'everyday' observation and i start to see value, contrast, texture effect etc.. in the world around me. It does help with taking photos that will be interesting references for later drawing too. Thanks for the excellent content you continue to post!

I just want to say, Your content is remarkable I understand most of your audience is 35 to 80+ But I'm a young one 23 And seeing someone who's gone from such a development At such a late age, it's inspiring to me personally.

I was watching a drawing tutorial that went to the extreme with observing. Every little fine angle of the eye needed to be capture to create a "correct" portrait. I could not help imagine the dread in the face of the artist if the subject would dare to blink... What he was teaching was not how to draw what you observe but how to copy. If you already understand the basic form of something the only thing you need to watch out for is what make the subject deviate from the basic form, i.e. capture details or what makes that form unique. It follows drawing is a two stage process, first step is to establish the basic form, and the second step is to fill in the details.

Question: I have taken your advice to do a 20 minute practice drawing everyday. Should I error on the side of fast to finish or getting perspective correct and not finishing? It takes me a longer time to measure angles to be really accurate.

20 minutes is not a magic number. It’s meant to be relatively short and achievable - but don’t feel bound by it. I think it’s worth working at perspective accuracy, otherwise you can build unhelpful habits. Perhaps simpler subjects and smaller sized drawings would also help? All the best with it Karen. 😀

Not at all. Sometimes I print out a colour and a b/w copy and have the second off camera - when a full range of values is going to be important to the finished drawing.
