You taught me more about drawing the built environment in the last few weeks than I learned from a dozen professors over four years in architecture school. Thank you so much!

Wow. Some comments make me forget to keep breathing 😁 Thank you for such a generous comment. I would greatly appreciate your telling your fellow students about my channel. All the best with your profession. 😀

Hello! What sequence of videos did you watch that was helpful?

People have said for years, "don't draw any tree, draw *that* tree," and how you frame it helps greatly. A great many thanks :>

And I certainly agree with that. My pleasure 😀

I wish I watched this video years ago; the topics and points you talked about such as understanding drawings are really created by marks, not mere lines, is something that isn't discussed much, but it's important to know. I really enjoyed this video! 👍

I have several videos on marks vs lines if you’re interested. That’s great to hear. Thank you for telling me. Much appreciated 😀

Once you started your explanation, my mind jumped to the challenge of sketching trees, so I felt closure when that was the example you chose!

Great. Have you seen my playlist on drawing trees?

Nice explanation. I've been doing a lot of drawing recently and this topic has become more apparent and helped me be much happier with the prices and finishing my work

Hello again Stephen! I've been busy lately and got sick, that's why I don't have time to draw, just browsing your videos and looking at ink drawings on FB, your method of teaching is the best and easy to understand, and you share it here on YT for free! Unsung hero in the art community.

I think one of the things he is saying is that beginners (like me) think that the process of drawing is about copying reality. But reality is just too complex and detailed to copy. So we need to find ways to make marks that give us the experience of looking at a scene, rather then trying to copy every detail in the scene

@chrisnewman9693 and how do we find them

@@KiryTF There are two ways to find out hot to make marks. You experiment and find out by doing or you learn from others that already done the process, which is what most of us are doing. Stephen has talked a lot about mark making in recent videos, how to break up lines, line thickness etc. A good exercise to train up your mark making is to draw texture as a value scale. Or simply copy the work of other artist.

Stephen post two type of videos: theory and practice. This is a theory video and they usually focus on summarize what he do by showing in his practice videos. If this video feels to disconnected for you I'd suggest to check out his drawing videos. In those videos he shows by drawing, from start to finish, what he is talking about.
