Dungeon Keeper was a game I enjoyed immensely and I remember playing it very slowly, enjoying the atmosphere and watching the creatures go about their business. So much so that in the second game I got nagged for not being a "real keeper" because it took me so long to beat the levels! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Great games all of'em! btw HOMM3 has also gotten a great deal of support from the community and even an expansion called HOTA and that + the OG version from GOG works well today with decent multiplayer lobby and single player, so I still play it every now and then :D

I very much enjoyed watching your run and it’s interesting to see which of the top strategies I figured out for myself back in 1999-2001 and which ones never occurred to me. Creating too many imps to make it so the Lord of the Land does not spawn is pure genius. I have a question though since I am outside the community. While there is undoubtably skill in running the game this way, has there been any thought as to creating other categories to shake things up and allow radically different types of runs to take place? It’s no secret that the deadly combination of possession and transfer creature utterly break the game for most levels, I figured that out back in 2000. So throughout the last 20-years every time I go back to the game after a long break I put in limitations to make the game harder. 1. No transfer creature 2. No possession 3. No spells 5. No traps 6. No creating Vampires 7. No creating Horn Reapers 8. No creating any creature with the temple 9. No scavenging I also began combining them so I finished a game with all 9 at the time time that I was very proud of. 😄 It was very difficult though. So does the community have any plans to create other categories with such restrictions in place and what’s your person take, is it the kind of thing that would interest you?

Sorry for my late reply! Thank you for your kind words. There are several different categories on speedrun.com but they are not currently contested. A lot of people suggested different categories but didn't commit to running them, hence the vanilla category is the only one currently active.

Been playing through DK again, and it is so satisfying seeing these levels that took me so long beaten so quickly. mostly because of not knowing the layout to go for an early attack on the dungeon heart with the powerful monsters I was bringing. And forgetting that it would be faster to just go for the multiply creatures special in Mirthshire to have two level 10 knights hunt down the hereos whilst setting up an open plan dungeon (because I managed to have a fully fortified dungeon with gem access, about half of the rest of the map had been tunneled out by the time I decided to just finish things) I'll watch the rest once I finish my playthrough where i'm currently on Blaise End.

Mirthshire is one of the most fun maps conceptually but tied worst for speedrunning, tied with Hearth and quasi with Batezek in DD :)

It's something I've been asking myself recently as well. I think I need to proper test which is quicker. Possessing the level 8 Spider is probably the fastest, since you can hit much faster manually and also add in a couple of Hail into the heart. But I need to test this proper!

Well now, someone actually speedruns DK! Funnily enough, I've figured a lot of the strats you use during the decades of casual play, with some twists- for example I always transfer the knight, as I'm not really playing for time and he's really tough. In Woodly Rhyme for example building a huge hatchery and force-feeding the reaper could have healed him a bit and might have saved the level. Some missions are very tedious and I usually speedrun them, but many others are just so fun to play, I feel like speedrunning is just missing on the fun. Why is this game so ridiculously good? :D

Thanks! I love this game in a similar fashion! Sometimes, particularly for the Lair, bigger rooms are not always more effective, and to keep cost down and not build more than necessary, I opt for chess-pattern-like lairs. Torture Chamber is similar, whilst a bigger room is more effective, a smaller can keep more creatures.

It's rather simple - but not all units can do it. First it needs a high base movement speed, take the Fly for example. If you slap the fly it will reach the adequate speed to be able to wall clip. Then you need a corner which is adjacent to another cornes (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqrVl5eYd7eZiZo) and when you line up to the wall, look at the corner you want to clip, turn 45 degrees to the right and press W and A, then you should be able to clip through :) Good luck!

Brilliant run. Just wanted to ask though, the DK wiki says that in FX you need to defeat Blue as well as the Avatar in Skybird Trill to win, is this not true or did you glitch around it?

Maybe that is for later versions of KFX? 0.4.6u is at this point phased out in favor of 0.4.8 and alphas of 0.4.9. I looked into the level file of 0.4.6u Skybird and there killing blue is listed as an alternative. It might also be a bug, because it has "player1 imprisions avatar" but I think he's never actually imprisoned by blue, he's just standing on a prison square. I'm actually not sure.

When you sacrifice an Imp it lovers the cost of the next Imp by 300, but to a minimun of 150. However if you keep reducing the cost of Imps stay at 150 until you're back at +/-0 Imp, then it will start increasing again! :)

Hey! not sure if this is overly active but im super curious if you have any tips for the Vampire run on Blaise end, practicing for about 20 mins and so far not once have I gotten to the heart without dying, and the only successful attempt I had was using call to arms while struggling to find the save spot from the traps.

Hi! I check in now and then! It's very tight with the Vampire on KFX, it will have very little HP when you hit the heart. Three things matter a lot, I'll take them in cronological order: 1. Don't step on any unneccesary amount of traps, especially in the vicinity of the heart, as they traps you've already stepped on with still be able to hit you. 2. Don't heal too early, let your HP go quite low before you heal the first time as you get the maximum amount of health 3. When you hit the heart it's important that you hit it diagonally so that you don't stand on a trap while hitting. Then hopefully you'll get it!

I don't know if it helps but I've found flying high and turning to the diagonal of the heart as soon as I can seems to negate some damage. Maybe to save a few hits before the Heroes arrive, otherwise they will focus my Vampire instead of the heart. However I like the thought of maybe baiting them with the Vampire, so that they go quicker to the Blue Heart...

Hey I noticed something weird with my old 2017 speed run of the first few levels. Zoonel beat level 3 in like 4 mins and 55 seconds, but it took me 6 min and 42 sec because for some reason I had to fight 3 waves, he only had to fight 2 waves. Is this a keeperfx issue? In the original game you only fight 2 waves or what? I can't remember much as it was a while ago. Also, it was keeperfx 0.46 back then lol.

It's a difference between the KFX and the GOG/original on that level. By wallclipping you can trigger the start of the waves prematurely but it will still be slower than on GOG/original

@@1211-n4d I actually used OBS to record and the timer is livesplit. It was a bit tricky to make them both appear on the same screen (since I don't have dual monitors) but eventually I got it to work. As the rules state on the community page of speedrun.com the timer has to be a separate timer and thus the built-in timer is not yet allowed for validating purposes. The in-game recording is allowed however. I'm not sure if Adikted works without tinkering, I'm sure you will get great answers though if you join the dungeon keeper discord, those guys are super helpful and knowledgable!

Posted separately, but i've encountered a glitch (in the GOG version) that resulted in secret stage 4 (with the level 9 priestess reward) being available for selection If the glitch was relatively easy to replicate, would it be enough to save time in Skybird Trill in any%?

It might be, might be possible to use the Wind spell to blow the Avatar earlier over to blue so that he dies and somehow play it off in that way, worth a shot!

It is! You can purchase it through gog.com and it will ship with an emulator which makes it very playable on win7 and later. Then there is also the KeeperFX community-made patch, which improves performance and graphics! 10/10 would recommend.

I didn't, until now, have the intention... I've run all of them except Netzcaro, but there's two issues, the first one being that they're rather difficult but the second one is the real issue: Batezek, it's a 50 minute auto-scroller and wouldn't make for such a nice viewing experience I assume?

Dont get why you do the Imp thing. I mean it kinda destroys the whole purpose of everything. I get all the rushing and tactics, but speedruns usually have at least certain requirments like forexample to do certain objectives properly like killing all enemies.

zoonel finishes the level with Boulder Traps, the effect is the same, he presses space 1 frame after the level finishes, just as I do, and it's about as easy, so why not?

in later levels i see you summon alot of imps and put them in the temple but why do you summon alot of them?

It's a very nice exploit; there's a hard limit on how many creatures there can be simultaneously in a level, and that limit is 255. If there are that many units, no heroes can spawn, so for instance at Skybird Trill this means that you don't have to fight the respawning Avatar, which is kinda huge :)

This is my favorite game! I very much enjoyed this video and your commentary, but it is a shame that the audio is so bad. You mumble a bit, your accent is a bit heavy, and you microphone might be bad? All that combined made it hard to understand what you were saying. Nevertheless, great video :)

Ah the good old days when games cheated like hell and finishing a mission felt like pure luck. Glad to see a pro demolish these stupid cheating freaks. I remember that mission where you start in an open area. One time they rushed me instantly, the second time they took their sweet time, the third time they couldn't make up their mind.

Glad you liked it! Hm... That describes three levels in Dungeon Keeper, but I think you're thinking of Benetzaron, in the Deeper Dungeons. I remember having all kinds of issues with that one earlier! EDIT: It's probably also one of my worst speedruns out there.

@@bndrkeeper7244 for 100 dollars you can get a used mic and amp and you will have something better than 90% of the people and it will last you forever. AT 2035 and eurorack MX602A mixer board if you want it easier get an elgato wave 1 for 77 dollars
