Mark this is one of your best videos. This was the first time for me hearing any music by this guitarist and he is outstanding. Keep doing this type of video. You are truly gifted and amazing.

Hey Michael. Thanks so much for the kind words. I was nervous about doing a reaction video but I figured with a little bit of playalong and the pop up factoids I added some value to an already amazing performance. plus, John gets all the money the video generates which is 100% fair. All I basically did was watch his amazing performance. Thanks again for the incredible support. I've been averaging 50 subs a day for the past 5 weeks. Old videos are doing well even though all the new ones seem to be slow starters (that's fine, I've gotten used to it). In a million years I never thought I'd reach 10k subs, let alone 20k. Hey Bryce. He actually has a custom made 11 string Maton. I noticed midway through the reaction that he doesnt have a high g and then I researched it after. I'm sure he just took it off for years like you say. It makes a slight difference. By no means is the song easy to play but it's a lot of pedal tones and pull offs. The real genius is in his dynamics, looping ability, his percussive stuff (incredible touch), etc. I looked at the tab after the fact and it doesnt do justice to what makes it a virtuoso performance. I hope you enjoy the reaction. I added some bio factoids pop up style and do a quick freestyle at the end to give people the general idea of what's going on. Have a good night and tomorrow let me know what you think. Thanks! -Mark

Hi Mark. Well done with this vid. I am a fan of John Butler, and have appreciated his music for years, and this tune in particular. I have attempted 'Ocean' but have never devoted enough time to it to really do it credit. I'll mention the tuning he uses, as it's a slight variation of Orkney Tuning, and I've been fiddling with Orkney since I ran across Celtic Guitarists Steve Baughman and Steven Wake. I first came across Baughman when a funeral director said he'd been asked for a Celtic tune, unspecified, as a catafalque tune, (the final farewell at a funeral service) and I not only didn't have one in the box, I didn't know where to look to find one. I found Baughman easily enough when I searched ytube for Irish guitar music, and found six really helpful lessons on Orkney tuning. Orkney is C-G-D-G-C-D. The only difference to Bulter's tuning is the 1st pair are lowered a whole step to D, and the 4th pair are raised a whole step to D. I improvised a Celtic piece by using Baughman's tuning and the melody to an old Irish folk song. Not wishing to get caught out again, and having been enchanted by the sounds, and simplicity, available from Orkney tuning, I went in search of some Celtic music I could use, not just at funerals, but as an instrumental to throw in at my cafe gig. About then I too discovered bagpipes are tuned in C, so I went looking for bagpipe music. I found a pipe band doing a beautiful tune called 'Journey's End', a well known Scottish air. When I went looking for some sheet music or tab, I lucked onto a hauntingly beautiful version by Steven Wake, a well known and highly skilled Celtic guitarist. His version is alternatively titled 'Journey's End (Lightly Swims the Swan)'; there's a vid on ytube. I bought the lesson from him, with instructional vid, play thru and tab. He does a lot of playing in Orkney tuning and capo 3, Eb.

@@8MinuteAxe I’ve been playing in Open E almost exclusively for about a year now in a partially successful attempt at sounding like Derek Trucks so should have a kinda head start. ‘Ocean’ actually reminds me of Gordon Giltrap’s ‘Heartsong’. Do you know it? It’s basically someone thrashing out something amazing on a 12 string, this time in Open G. In the late seventies when I was about 12-13, it was used as the theme music for the BBC’s Holiday Programme on a Sunday evening. It used to show impossibly glamorous locations on the Mediterranean, many of which seemed to have lots of topless ladies in them. Something my younger self found EXTREMELY interesting. As a consequence the song has been etched on my brain ever since. Makes me kinda wish I had a twelve string to play it on 😉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYi3hmesjbmJZqs Here you go.

Hey man. You also asked about whether or not you should do more reactions. I mentioned earlier that I'm not really into reaction videos I don't understand the fascination with watching other people ooh and ahh about a song. Why not just listen to the song yourself and have your own emotions rather than watching someone else's emotions. I wouldn't consider this a reaction video. You give just the right amount of analysis, you show the positions for those of us crazy enough to give it a go and you give a professional's take on his performance. I would love to see more of these. Again, great job Mark!

Cool, your one of the few that gets the only one g string. G is always a pain in the arse, it’s always a little sharp or a little flat depending on where you play it. Two is twice as bad & why I sometimes find 12 string pieces a little… muddy?.. in the middle. Takes an attentive, knowledgeable guitarist to pick it up. Big thumbs up to you man.

Yes, he's really something else. I've had a lot of positive feedback on this one even though it got less views that I had hoped out of the gate. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the channel but I mostly play. I do a ton of 12 string covers and originals and I give away a brand new guitar every month. I do a lot of classic rock. Here's a cool video cover I did of LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS COVER AND LESSON kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIvHh4KgZtyGqJo&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. I even audition for John and Ringo in on spot. LOL. i dont think the guitar is specially customed for 11 strings... you can see that he just removed it. Great video by the way
@8MinuteAxe3 жыл бұрын
Hey Javier. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I really appreciate it. I researched a little. The guitar hes using in the video is an 11 string. Maron modified it for him (notice there are only 11 tuning pegs on the guitar with a nice ornate carving done where the 12th tuning peg would usually be. The nut and saddle were also recut for 11 strings. John used this guitar for years so it's obviously a retrofit. Subsequently, Maton made a few 11 string guitars from scratch but John favors the one hes been playing for almost 20 years now.Enjoy the rest of your week and take care. Mark

Hey Ricardo. I really appreciate you taking the time to check the video out. I do mention that hes playing a custom 11 string Maton in the video. He is definitely the modern master of the 12...uhum... 11 string guitar. I've been a fan of the JBT for years and only found out about his 12 string talents a few years ago. Its smart to take the high g off, especially when playing finger style. I've been playing Leo Kottkes Vaseline Machine Gun (if you think john is impressive you should definitely check out Kottke, THE master of the 12) and even with Leo's remarkable picking style, it's tough to articulate that high G with real consistency. Thanks again for your time and comment. Have a great day and take care. Mark

Skills shown but the song doesn't move me.
@8MinuteAxe3 жыл бұрын
I definitely get that Michael. It's too long. He's an excellent player and the dynamics are amazing but the song is over indulgent. People have been bombarding me with requests regarding it and as much as I enjoyed the video, it's a lot of effort to learn a lot of repetitive parts. The hard part is the picking rhythms and the dynamics. When I just look at the tab, there's nothing earth shattering or that's going to be difficult to play. To put it all together will be a challenge. I have about 10 other videos I have coming out first. Thanks so much for checking it out though. I did another reaction to "The Worst Band Ever". It's pretty funny. I state no less than 5 times that the guys should get a lot of credit for putting themselves out there but I know I will still get a bunch of fools asking me why I'm picking on the band. LOL. Take care. -Mark

Hey Cameron. Great to hear from you. I know right! I toured for years and all of my guitars remained in great shape....and I consumed plenty of alcohol on many of those dates but I always remembered to put my axes back in their cases. I never understood how so many touring musicians have acoustics that are beat to hell. I give John a pass. He does a ton of percussive stuff and uses those fiberglass nails which have to be murder on the top. Thanks again for the support. Have a great week! -Mark

Not for me thanks ,I've been playing without my high g it's the thinnest string and probably snapped,with lock down it's been hard to accept get out to replace. Too repetitive I wouldn't waste my time with it .
@8MinuteAxe3 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark. I get that for sure. It's not like Mood for a Day where there is a real satisfaction after 'learning it'. It's so improved and based on the dynamics, etc. You noticed that he doesn't use a high G, right? He used to just take it off but in this video he's using a custom 11 string that Maton made for him. I left mine on and grew my nails a little. I've been playing the 12 so much at this point it isn't hard to pluck the lower G without sounding the high one. I've snapped a few myself but all because of my own stupidity (I took hold of the wrong peg and SNAP). Thanks for weighing in. As always, your opinions are welcome and interesting. I respect anybody who's laughing at me for doing a reaction video. I laugh at myself. Reaction videos may be the dumbest thing ever. Tons of people told me to check this song out. Now I love John Butler. I had a chance to play with him many years ago and I've always been a fan. But there's not a whole lot to this one. He has excellent timing and uses the looper really well but the song is essentially every basic pattern you could ever do in the key of E. I never even thought of asking him how he feels about it. Of course, at the time I played with him, I didn't even know he was a big 12 string guy. He didn't even use one at that particular gig in New Haven. Anyway, I love John Butler. Love his playing. Love his songwriting. This song doesn't do it for me. And please keep laughing. I deserve it. It's like, why play. Why teach. Why do anything when you can just watch somebody else do it and react. DOH! People have way too much time on their hands. Anyway, take care and be well my friend. Mark
