the deluxe with the volume half way up & then dialing a tele or strat down half way until it cleans up is the ultimate clean tone i've ever had. some people say these amps are too bright, but I notice a lot of people have their guitar volume all the way up & then dial the amp really low. this gets a pretty thin bright tone, but the other way around is heaven. you can have the treble on the amp way up & its just sparkling crystalline glass - gorgeous.

yeah, not even hating but its crazy how many people ive been in bands with (myself included at one point) that have no idea how tone and gain work and you kiiiiiinda have to for the deluxe reverb or youre gonna have a hard time getting what you want. Once id learned far more about gain through other avenues, the deluxe reverb was instantly a more interesting\applicable amp, especially with an od or fuzz added in there.

Got it in one. It gies to show that many younger musicians haven't used real amps on stage for long enough to discover these winning settings. The same principle applies to guitar settings in general. I found this the hard way. After using Strats and Tele's for years, I finally bought a PRS with humbuckers, and it was my habit to have my guitars on full volume but into a volume pedal before going into the amp. While this was great for solos, I found it hard to get a good sound for clean chird work. Then after some reading I realised that my CE was set up with the idea of plugging straight into a tube amp that was low powered ( like a deluxe) and winding back on the guitar volume to clean up. I don't know how the guitar is set up but when I wind it down to about half vilume it not only cleans up but sounds as if one coil is turned off, and the sound is almost indistinguishable from that of a Strat...( the PRS is after all a bolt on neck like a strat). I figured that you were supposed to set the amp high enough for overdriven leads, and wind down on the guitar in what Guitar Player magazine called " a continuous channel change on the knob" or something similar. I found I was using the guitar all wrong and once I used it the way it was designed to be used , it sounded brilliant.

Agreed. Amp volume up and guitar volume down is the key to great cleans, in my opinion. Plus it gives you somewhere to go with your dynamics. Little volume pot increases to increase the gain as needed. Even with modelers and plugins I'll do this and it usually gets the job done

The most recorded Fender amp of all time can hardly be called “underrated.” They’re phenomenal, and lots of people have known that for a long time. Just about every session player in Nashville has one, and almost every recording studio in Nashville has one laying around. The Deluxe Reverb is the time-tested, versatile, workhouse amp of many pro guitarists.

My wife is opening a gymnastics facility and the other day she gave me the greenlight to setup my rig in the warehouse and rip for a little bit. Brought my vintage 1965 Deluxe Reverb and K Line Truxton, cranked it up and it was glorious. The best tone I've ever heard and some of the most fun I've ever had. The stock C12K is the best option, just break it in. I promise, you can save thousands of dollars and a year of your time by just believing me lol I pair mine with a maz18. Deluxe Reverb + Strat is such a classic pairing, that I assumed you had outgrown it and was looking for tones beyond it. Have you explored the Twin Reverb, too? @@tedcallahan9149 I played them back-to-back last night because I thought the difference was in my head, but the Deluxe just sounds better. The Princeton sounds darker, and you can hear a bit of Tweed. The Deluxe sounds more sparkly and just has an overall fuller sound (both amps have 12inch speakers). I only play clean if that matters. My Princeton is the Bordeaux version with a Jensen P12Q and the Deluxe has the Jensen C12K. The Deluxe is a 2009 and the Princeton is a 2022.

@@tedcallahan9149Sound wise, the deluxe is tighter on the low end and brighter shine on the high end (but without harshness); with a slight mid scoop versus the more prominent mids on a Princeton - if I had to try and sum it up, it just feels like it has more body and more clean headroom too. Probably a combination of factors - slightly different tone/eq circuit, 12 inch speaker in the deluxe (most Princetons are 10s, but i have seen 12 on special editions) and the deluxe's 6V6 tubes being pushed harder (plus biased hotter) all contribute.

All of the modern Fender reissue and Hot Rod amps use cheap filter and bypass electrolytic capacitors as others have said. Get them done early and these can be incredibly reliable for a long time. Noise could be caps going or a preamp valve/tube going. I forget which of these series has it but the tube heater supplies are a quick connect on the pcb and can overheat. Have a tech take a look at it and they can get it sorted. Psionic Audio and Brad's Guitar Garage have several videos on their channels speaking about the common issues with these. Nothing insurmountable to make them rock solid, and also sky's the limit for modding. I think they sound stellar, I bought an Imperial Mk2 as my foray into the deluxe reverb

Years later, took out the DR and love how it sounds. I have since decided that the quality of the music or tone is up to the player and how the guitar is setup. Volume, picking attack, etc. Now I have a DR Tonemaster. I love it and if I want a better tone, I practice more. Or I let one of the local advanced players give it a try. Thoughts of buying anything else go out the window. It's the player, not the amp.

It's because they are lower powered, they have to be more cranked, therefore more tubey character when played. Also, I believe, and I have no factual evidence to base this on, but I feel that 6V6 tubes have a slightly more cuter or sweeter sound in an amp than the more bland sounding ( or neutral) 6L6 valves. The 6V6 tube is to me the " little sister of the EL34 valve, but a but more delicate maybe, and compared to a 6L6 or KT88, its actual inefficiency is what we like about it because it flatters and smooths the sounds that otherwise would be harsh in a guitar amp.

You should know that vintage Fender amps, like your Pro Reverb, were designed to last forever, given reasonable care and proper maintenance. After a thorough electronic restoration, these amps will be MORE reliable than a new reissue, and sound as good or better. I know exactly what you mean by underrated. When I was in my 20s and used to gig semi-professionally I wouldn’t even look at anything made by Fender or any major brand, even though I saw great players gigging them and getting phenomenal sounds. Part of the reason is that these classic circuits don’t offer any kind of master volume. I was playing rock music and getting most of my rhythm gain from the amp; I needed some kind of master to make that work in most of the venues I played. However, a big part of it was excellent marketing from boutique companies that made me believe anything made using PCB or even coming out of a big factory was inherently inferior. I’d say I didn’t really trust my ears.

I would Guess your noise issues are UK power related. You also said later in the Day that you had issues with all your other modellers and amps.

perfect for Studio (home recording, etc), not so much for the Stage (pedals, and cutting through a live band and audience).

As for noise, my 1965 twin reverb is the quietest amp you'll ever hear. It's all in who's your tech and what does he know to do. Simple things like an insulated lead to your volume pots instead of a solder run across the entire board picking up all kinds of noise, or just lead dress issues by the heater wires from the sockets. There are a ton of things that can be done for cheap to a deluxe reissue, but your tech probably doesn't know them. For example you mention them being biased hot, well that means burning through your power tubes, and they put little 1-watt screen resistors on there AND put them in the middle of a busy circuit board. Sizing them up to 2 watts and floating them off the socket lugs, might keep your amp from frying completely just because you lost a tube. So is upsizing the heater wire connections which are literally legally underrated for the current they draw, so that's another fail point for no reason in a drri.

See if you can try out an actual 60's deluxe reverb, there is a difference, although I've played the reissue and it sounded great. I have a '66 that I bought for $600 in 1993, there's something even more special in the old ones.

With that sharp hair cut it is only proper we now refer to you as "Sir Mister John Cordy The Great". Or we can just abbreviate it as S.M.J.C.T.G

You're the first person I've heard use the term "underrated" to describe this amp. I have seen some say it's overrated, but they were metal guys for whom no amount of gain is too much. For me, it's a Princeton and a DR, no other needs. I've been playing around with the Welagen ODS, and it's great, but it's a "thing" and not as easy to land on the most appealing sounds for me.

Underrated is a funny way to describe the most ubiquitous amp in history! Ha ha... BUT, you make an important point... I might say it is a forgotten amp... as in, people forgot why it has been so highly rated.

Not sure the Deluxe Reverb is "underrated" as such. Its just too heavy, loud and pricey for the majority of players who are - for numerous reasons - happy being "bedroom blasters". The Tone Master version answers these 3 "issues" though, albeit many would argue the price tag might be a tad steep still.

Cheap electrolytic filter capacitors all need replacing in the reissues. Easy job for technicians to make money from, but will make these amps very reliable in future.
