Years later I was travelling to Bali on a 13 hour flight and it was one of the movies available. I had never been able to sleep on planes before but 10 minutes later 😴. Nobody thought that this "Rat Pack" classic would be revamped into a franchise. I saw the 1960's original before the remake came out. Also it re-established the 'Heist Comedy' that the original had first introduced. Great cast. One of the best ensembles ever. They all had such a good time working together. Going by the 'behind the scenes' footage and interviews. The most recent installment was the spinoff, Ocean's 8 (2018) and it was unexpectedly good. But work your way through Ocean's 12 & 13 first. RIP to the legends, Bernie Mac (Frank Catton), Carl Reiner (Saul Bloom) and Jerry Weintraub (lead producer of the Ocean's Trilogy, 2001-2007).

Jen, the guy who played Saul was comedy legend Carl Reiner. He wrote for Sid Caesar and Dick Van Dyke in the 60s. He worked with Mel Brooks. He has a long list of writing and acting credits. He was also the father of actor/director Rob Reiner. Unfortunately he passed away in 2020 at age 98. The problem with having a large ensemble cast like this with so many stars is, the salary costs alone would normally be prohibitive. I remember reading that they were all so excited to work with each other that they agreed to work for much less than their normal salaries so the film could be made.
@touchstoneaf Жыл бұрын
Of my favorite things about these movies is the constant hazing of Matt Damon's character because he's the baby in the group. Another thing I love is the basic, like, work-marriage between Danny and Rusty. Their unspoken communication is adorable. Every single character is adorable, even the brothers making their brotherly arguing work for the con. It's all just so clever. My favorite of the movies is the third one out of these three, but this first one is a close second. There's also one with all women made later with Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett among others, it's based on the concept that Danny's sister is also in the game. This is one of the best remakes ever. Most remakes are crap, but this one really tops itself. Among older con movies, The Sting is really good, and Catch-Me-if-You-Can with Leonardo DiCaprio's really good as well.

So, the cons Rusty lists, you can use their names to figure out what they refer to: A Boesky refers to big time trader who commited security fraud. This would be Saul's part, playing Lyman Zerga pretending to be a rich man in order to gain access to the vault. A Jim Brown refers to Frank and Linus' confrontation over racial discrimination. It's based on similar confrontations you see in football, as Jim Brown is a famous football player. Miss Daisy, naturally, refers to the movie Driving Miss Daisy, and its the remote controlled van used as a fake getaway vehicle. Two Jethros (in reference to Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies) is the Malloy Brothers, meaning their mostly doing grunt work. Leon Spinks means the power going out during the boxing match (in reference to the bout where Leon Spinks unexpectedly scored an upset win against Muhammad Ali) "The Biggest Ella Fitzgerald Ever" refers to the fake vault footage, in reference to Ella's commercial for Memorex, where a recording of her voice shatters glass, and the ad goes "Is it live or is it memorex?"

If you need a "worst" it'd have to be Linus for wandering off and getting our grease man's hand injured. You're right though. Kinda nitpicking to get there. No one is really the worst. I love this movie. It's funny that the driving force behind this entire heist was Danny's love for Tess, the "take" was just what he needed to get the crew to buy in and do the job with him. This is how far he'd go to get her back. If you want to compare grand gestures of love... this one is up there. You're really going to love Ocean's 12.

Not strictly a heist movie, but any list of slick and stellar crime movies is woefully incomplete without The Sting. Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Robert Shaw, an elaborate confidence game, a 70s movie set in the 20s scored by "The Entertainer"; what's not to like?

back in 1999 during the air run of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, they had an episode involving a heist. since it was set in 1960's Vegas, the scenes involving the heist were scored with soft jazz. at the time, nobody paid much attention to that episode in particular, or the whole show... but then THIS movie came out, cleverly using swagger, jazz, high stakes, sharp dresses and a very complex plot of double crosses and back stabs. when the DVD remaster of DS9 came out around 2005 or so, EVERYONE was comparing that episode to this movie. personally, I like the merit of DS9 being able to pull the heist out in situation, as a 1960's movie.... no tech, no sci-fi, no omniscient knowledge, just plain suave persuasion, cunning and sleight of hand.

The Bellagio Fountain scene is sneaky great. You wind up at the end with Carl Reiner and Matt Damon standing there. Old school showbiz legend and the new generation with the legend getting the final spotlight. As to Brad Pitt always eating, it was because he thought that a guy like Rusty would be too on the go to sit down and eat, so, grab what you can when you can. And from an acting perspective, gives you hands occupied. Itks become a bit of thing, to spot Pitt eating on the go in other films since.

OOOH I can't wait for you to see Ocean's 12, nothing beats 11 but 12 is really good. 13 is pretty good, but definitely the weaker of the 3. All of that said, based on the cast alone, I had really high hopes for Ocean's 8 (I love them in their other movies) but was SO disappointed. I rank it right down there with the original Ocean's 11 (1960), I had a hard time finishing both. Without spoilers, it takes a lot of elements from the first movie (so much, at times it feels like a blatant copy) but none of the soul and chemistry (c'mon 11 was all chemistry, SO GOOD), which I attribute to serious issues with the writing and direction. You may want to watch it just so you can close the franchise officially but you could also skip it with zero FOMO. Regardless, amazing reaction to one of the quintessential heist movies!

Danny sort of unconsciously takes his hands off them to gesture to the waiter and Linus is very quick. If you're looking you can actually see him grab them like an instant after Danny moves. Great reflexes and really fast, but not a magicians trick per se.

The trilogy is fantastic. But. You might want to check the original. Ocean's Eleven (1960) with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Edit: Also, RIP Bernie Mack.

A real good remake. If you missed it; Frank Sinatra as Danny Ocean, Dean Martin as Sam, Sammy as Josh, Lawford as Jimmy, Conte as Tony, Joey as Mushy, Henry as Roger, Buddy Lester as Vince, Richard Benedict as Curly, Norman as Peter and Clem Harvey as Louis Jackson - old Army buddies descend on an unsuspecting Vegas for the caper of a lifetime.

If you like heist movies you should check out The Sting (1973) with Paul Newman & Robert Redford.

Greatest reaction ever. Glad you liked it so much. All three Ocean's movies of the trilogy were really good so looking forward to you watching the others.

10:56, can't remember if it was from a MAD Magazine parody of this heist movie, but loved the line (approximately) "We score 160 Millions on this heist. But the preparations cost us 170 Millions!" 🤔😉

Your enthusiasm was infectious. Please react to more heist movies and perhaps tell us some anecdotes from your bank -robbing days (it's okay, Jen, we have all had wild youths). There are two sequels with the same cast which I'm sure you'll enjoy and look into the filmography of Steven Soderbergh-- it's very eclectic and rewarding. Another great video, and I'm looking forward to your reaction to You Only Live Twice. Stay excellent.

Ocean's 11, Ocean's 12, Ocean's 13 then Ocean's 8 which is set after Ocean's 13

One of the best modern heist movies and certainly one of the best heist franchises. Watch them all (even Ocean's 8)! By virtue of the simple scene where Danny and Rusty list off who they need as a string of references alone, it's an incredibly written movie, the entire crew is fantastic, and it's bright, colorful and beautifully shot.

There's a couple other, more atypical heist movies you might want to check out. One is called "The Hot Rock" with Robert Redford and George Segal - it's a heist story where a bunch of stuff goes pear-shaped and they keep having to steal the thing over and over again. Another is "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" with Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges about which no more probably needs to be said. 😊
