Six Seals Rescued From Entanglements

One after the other, the OCN team spots seals entangled in various fishing gear items and general ocean rubbish. All these entanglements could've ended all these seals' lives, no matter how thin, light or small. Cleaning our beaches doesn’t remove the trash from the ocean. Therefore, we must find better ways to remove it and start by preventing more rubbish from being added to the mass.

Наши усилия - всего лишь капля в море по сравнению с миллионами тонн мусора, ежегодно попадающими в мировой океан. Why do human beings think that the oceans are the waste paperbasket for all the garbage they produce!? They really do not know what pain they cause to the amimals living in the sea. The problem is a bit more complicated: what we throw away does not magically disappear. On the 6 billion tonnes of plastic waste generated since the 1950s, only 9% has been recycled and 12% incinerated. The remaining 79% has been dumped in the wild, much of it ending up in the oceans, torturing and killing millions of marine animals every year. We are unfortunately only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. We scan the different groups of Cape fur seals with binoculars from far away, looking for imperfections in their fur. This is a skill we wish we never had to develop, but we are unfortunately very experienced by now.

I know you are not complaining here. These seals are strong all right! They are scrappy, mistrustful, and grumpy. Praise God! They are harder to work on but much better off in the long run. It means they have good survival skills! Still I love to see those moments when they let you scratch their ears etc. and linger a bit. Its not a thank you, its more like exhaustion and or confusion but i think its okay to say to yourself..."You're welcome buddy. Have a good day."
