Baby Seal Almost Lost His Flipper

We can't imagine the amount of suffering this poor seal has been through. A lot of marine animals are suffering horrible deaths from these entanglements. Seals, in particular, have a very good survival rate, and we trust this pup will heal well. We will continue to rescue entangled animals, but this won't solve the problem of getting fishing gear out of the ocean in the first place. 🦭

I'm really surprised just how dumb they are for mammals. Some animals seem to understand that you tried to help, or that you never harm any of them (after repeated exposure). Take lions for example: Through habituation, they acclimate to cameramen. Obviously food makes some of these processes easier, but these animals have seen you guys approach hundreds upon hundreds ... have never seen any of them harmed // killed (eaten) ... you'd have to imagine some remember that you helped them? But they only seem scared+angry. No one thinks it's weird for such a large mammal that I would've assumed to be a smart animal..?

I know you have seen at least one other seal missing a front flipper, but survival is not the only challenge, he must still be able to swim and hunt successfully. Thanks Tony and Denzil for your gentle handling of this poor pup. 🙏❤️

I was pessimistic as Tony was removing the line from the 2nd seal, considering the wound was so deep and went all the way around the flipper, and that he wasn't using it as he ran to the water, BUT after he went over the kayak he did start to use it and that gives me such hope! Thank you SO much, Tony and Denzil, for saving BOTH of these very "vocal" pups, AND for doing what you do SO well 💖 ... the OCN team ROCKS!

While he is fighting the rescuers off, I realised that without full use of both of his flippers, he'll be very easy for a predator to catch given the right circumstances. @@Paka1918 Hallo Paka 1918, OCN hat sich über deinen Vorschlag sicher auch schon lange Gedanken gemacht. Leider aber fehlt es an Geld, wie üblich wenn es um nützliche Dinge geht. In Deutschland gibt es eine Nordsee-Hilfe für Heuler und Robben und da werden jährlich bis zu 300 Tiere versorgt. 👍👍👍

We have thought about building our own rehabilitation facility for a long time and came to the conclusion that it was more beneficial for the animals we rescue to not do so. Cape fur seals thrive in their natural habitat, away from humans, and sea water acts a very efficient wound cleaner.

And a few months ago, my dumb butt was thinking that it's getting better because the vast majority of rescues were entanglements without injury. Ones that were found very early. But, lately they've been quite bad. The fight never ends. Keep up the great work.

I wish all hunters can turn into animal rescuers. Those guys, saving the seals, are showing way more bravery, manliness, strength, strategy and hunting skills than any idiot with a riffle, watching a peaceful animal at the distance, who was often shown to him by a guide.
