The saddest part is that the 19 year old was apprehensive and must have had that gut feeling about the dangers involved but his father ignored him.the other 20 year old and his father who declined the offer for the trip actually saved himself and his father due to his intuition. I don't know how true it is that the 19 year old didn't want to do it. An interview with the mother she states she was originally supposed to go with her husband but the son kept asking and she switched with him. Now to say he didn't have apprehension is silly everyone would be nervous going to do this. He opened up to the aunt that gave the interview and she seemed to be doing the interview in the wrong state of mind, spoke out of turn, and for the wrong reasons. I don't know what was going on with her emotionally (rightfully so) I don't know what the reason she gave the interview but she was going through a lot... I don't mean this as a negative I don't think she was looking to gain anything again I don't think she knows why she did it.

A good lawyer can always argue that the consent was flawed in the first place for gross negligence. But I doubt that Ocean Gate will survive long enough to see a trial. And since the CEO went down with the ship, he can't be charged with manslaughter. That being said, I wonder if the passengers all had personal life insurance. If so, then that's pretty much the only compensation that the estate would receive. This being a commercial operation, Ocean Gate should have insurance covering their employees and clients. But in this case, it's most unlikely. Sometimes, the richest people can make the dumbest mistakes.

Excuse my ignorance, and maybe I shouldn't even mention it, idk, but I'm a tad confused about the 19-year-old and his father because from the beginning the boys' aunt has stated that she remembers him being very nervous and correct me if I'm wrong, but I've even heard her describing him as being "terrified," and that he only went with his father on the trip to please his father because it was father's day. Then, in a recent interview with the mother and wife of the father/son duo, she states that she was originally supposed to be on the Titian, but she gave, "Gave the seat to her son because he really wanted to go." It doesn't really matter at the end of the day, I suppose because she lost two of her loved ones and other families lost their loved ones and it's all just very tragic, but something about the testimony the mother gave doesn't sit well with me for some reason. From the last message sent from the vessel, we know it didn't suddenly implode without warning. He sent a message saying they were dropping weights to resurface, but didn't say what the emergency was. There's alot of unknowns on how carbon fiber reacts when it starts failing at those depths, because nobody has ever been foolish enough to use it for a sub, aside from this guy. It's all speculation and I could be wrong, but I think it either sprung a pinhole leak and started spewing high pressure water, or part of the hull started pressing in at a weak spot. The Brit he fired, said there were stress cracks, so it probably started failing in that spot. He was probably frantically trying to resurface to no avail. If we knew the precise time the navy sensors detected the implosion and the time of the last message, we can at least know how long it took to implode after he started having problems. Then again, my scenario could be wrong. Someone said the thrusters could have gotten stuck, forcing the sub down too fast, which would have imploded it. He was using those cheesy wireless video game controllers, that have a history of failing. Just like in the video games, it's game over if the control messes up.

There is so much wrong with this "implosion simulation". The titanium end caps and the fairing (tail end) were shot off which is consistent with the wreckage. What likely happened is that because of cyclical pressure fatigue causing weakening of the carbon fiber pressure vessel and due to dissimilar materials being attached, the carbon fiber laminate cracked, causing the implosion. The crew didn't even know what happened as the implosion was faster than their nervous system reaction (150 to 300 milliseconds). It was a very merciful death compared with being stuck on the bottom and dying from carbon dioxide poisoning or oxygen running out. From a physics and engineering perspective, we can discuss the flexural modulus or resistance to bending of the materials: Titanium is 100 and very resistant while carbon fiber ranges from 20-30+. Additionally, constant pressure cycling from 300+ atmospheres to 1 atmosphere (surface of the ocean) and multiple trips to the Titanic over the last two years caused fatigue: cracks, de-lamination, and other structural damage which culminated in the implosion last Sunday.

There's a video from a dude in MX from 10-11 months ago of him boarding this sub. They experienced problems down there (comms) and were trying to resurface, but ran into one more problem. Everyone was calm. Nobody cared. P.H. was there. As they were going up, things were restored and they went back down to see the Titanic. The man also explains how the people before his trip were down there 27 hours. He then says your time varies. They tell you it's 4 hrs watching the Titanic but that sometimes u never see it bc it's tough to find and/or you can encounter problems and the company aborts mission. All in all I think it was common to lose comms and to try to resurface. That said, idk if in this last trip they heard the delamination taking place as Cameron stated they might have which probably made the experts nervous...and relayed it to those in the vessel, but idk.

The titanium end caps are all that's left of the pressure vessel... the cylinder is just gone apparently probably in a million pieces. The electronics in the fairing outside the pressure vessel seems okay so they might be able to pull data and see how it happened exactly. The hull had stress monitoring system and it likely sounded the alarm as it's now all but confirmed that they dropped ballast, began an emergency ascent and then imploded. They knew it. The hull must have made some ungodly sounds before giving way and then yeah... 30 milliseconds. I thought 10 but they must've run the numbers.

The fact that Oceansgate privately had know that Sunday that the sub imploded immediately after comms and tracking were both lost simultaneously and shared that fact with the Navy,....yet, while publicly misleading the public for four days is the real tragedy here. The families were hanging on to false hope for days until Thursday when Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute finally confirmed what was known all along on Sunday by traveling to Titan's last known position and then descending straight to the bottom where Titan's wreckage was found,......exactly where they expected to find it.

The pressure is so enormous at that depth, I believe they only heard crackling noises, probably looked at each other in confusion for 5-10 seconds while Stockton sent the distress signal out, trying to resolve and resurface before any of them got freaked out - before it imploded. He was so prideful that I don't think he would have admitted how close they came to death had they resurfaced in time and survived. He probably would have minimised it or lied to cover it up. In the end, I don't think even *he* really knew the dice he was rolling. He thought, like his passengers who read that crazy waiver and still signed on, that disaster was something that happens to other people. And never himself.

The initial implosion would have lasted about one or two frames of the video, possibly accompanied by a flash as any atmospheric gases inside the sub - and _people_ - ignited under a pressure increase of 180 or so million pounds within a few milliseconds. Much of the debris wound up blown inside one of the hemispherical titanium end caps, according to Cameron.

Carbon fibre has _tensile_ strength, but the forces from water pressure acting on the Titan were _compressive._ It is likely that the binder alone gave the hull its compressive strength with fibre holding it together to prevent cracking. The junction of the carbon fibre, titanium and the glue that bonded them was a weak point with different rates of expansion and contraction. Glue that is elastic at room temperature is likely brittle at near freezing temperatures. These materials were bound to detach from one another. What is surprising is not that the vessel failed, but that it managed to remain intact for as long as it did. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with a cylinder design with heme-spherical ends, although in the submersible it was employed in a situation that is the reverse of the gas container concept under which it evolved, exerting pressure outward. That will likely be the shape of future crafts, not spherical designs. Had the hull of this vessel been constructed of a single material, titanium, properly analyzed as to the forces acting upon it, with welded joints, this craft might have successfully completed this and many other trips to the ocean floor.

Indeed, there appears to be grounds for a lawsuit because of facts not disclosed to the participants ... such as the fact that the window was dive rated to only 1300 meters on a dive that took them down to almost 4000 meters. There are also lies or misstatements as to the nature of the specific manufacturing process used in putting together the carbon fiber matrix. And there was the willful withholding of information: warnings from other deep sea experts. However, I believe the waiver conditions regarding JURISDICTION will remain enforceable. One of the conditions stipulated in the waiver prescribed that the lawsuit must be filed in The Bahamas. (I'm not sure what the ramifications are, but apparently there must be something about The Bahamas that favors the corporation.) And even if the plaintiffs should happen to win the case, Oceangate was careful to set up the company as separate entities. Collecting any monetary damages from the main corporation itself is highly unlikely. Notwithstanding monetary damages, the main corporation has suffered a substantial loss of reputation and it is questionable whether it will ever recover.

I was going to try and open communication with my dad again who has been absent and manipulative majority of my life just to be nice to him since I felt bad that he didn’t have his kids (me and my brother) with him for Father’s Day, but the Titan and that passenger taught me “Why the hell should I do something to please my family member? I don’t like being with him and he clearly does not care.” (This is my own experience, I do not know the relationship he and his father had and will not assume what it was out of respect and human decency) I put the phone down and decided to cut contact for good. I agree with you. I didn't know much about the titanic until I watched Cameron's movie. Since then I've done research and watched documentaries on it. Its fascinating and haunting at the same time and it has some sort of pull towards it. What scares me the most is I'm putting myself in the shoes of the tourists who died because I feel if I had the money I would have gone. I am also over 50, and I know that there was widespread fascination with the titanic, and the ship was glamorized, well before the movie came out. Why the hell do you think James Cameron made the movie in the first place?

@@valerierodger I'm saying that regardless of how mainstream it was before, the movie blew it up even bigger. Think about how movies affect the viewer. There were a lot of emotional scenes that embed themselves in the subconscious of the mind. This is why people get emotionally attached to movies and since this was a fictional version of an actual historical event, it affects people even more. No need to keep rehashing. Everyone can have their opinions.

I wonder if the 19 year old had a conversation with his dad like " I told you i was scared I did it for you now i'm going to die" and the father probably felt so much guilt bringing his son along to their doom

@@LisaMedeiros-tr2lzThere’s a theory going around online that because the submersible deployed ballast that the passengers likely knew something was wrong, but the implosion happened so fast, I think you’re right that they didn’t have time to really think about what was going on.
