My grandpa told me the cards were a waste of money and a passing phase I wouldn't care about in 5 years. I mean he was right on the second part but boy I coulda had some cash had I kept em lol. When I was like 10-13 I used to go to toys r us steal as many packs of pokemon as I could, then I'd walk across the parking lot to the mall and sell the Holo cards to the kiask stores, I sold at least two Charizards. But that was live when they would give you like 50-60 bucks, but now lol damn I wish my younger criminal mind had thought about appreciation of value.

I wonder how many kids that grew up during the Pokemon craze have those kinds of experiences. One of my best memories of spending time with my grandmother was a long day of running errands, going to the cider mill, and getting ice cream. The last place we stopped, I asked for a pack of Pokemon cards. I ended up pulling a holo neo genesis Lugia (my favorite Pokemon at the time) and I was so ridiculously excited. She didn't quite understand why but was happy for me anyway, as grandparents are. She passed away late last year. I have that card framed on my desk.

Dude! Everyone has been sleeping on this powerhouse, the same way everyone has on Cacturne in Gen 3. could we PLEASE see an Emerald Cacturne solo playthrough?🤩 I love him, he’s sooo good! Faint Attack, Giga Drain / Needle Arm, Leech Seed, Growth, and he’s good to go! Such a beast, with it’s 115 atk and Sp. atk!
@tsawy6
@tsawy6 2 жыл бұрын
I'm actually /right now/ doing a cacnea solo playthrough, because, yknow, cacturne would be too good! My current set against the league (I'm not quite done yet) is Faint Attack, Giga Drain, Growth and Substitute. Leech seed isn't /super/ good, because you need to be sweeping, and the recovery doesn't help against multiple pokemon. TBH more useful was Ingrain, of all things, which was pretty rad before I started using Giga Drain. In truth, Emerald is pretty easy for solo runs, I'm beginning to suspect a little too easy. Even with a first form pokemon I've used no rare candies, trained none at all, skipped lots of (but not all) optional trainers, and made it all the way to lance already. This is /with/ a weakness to Flannery and Winona, two of the harder gyms. EDIT: Just beat Wallace at level 74! Had to use my 7 candies, Drake was pretty inconsistent, and Wallace was surprisingly tough with his resistant Tentacruel and Milotic and the strong Waillord Blizzards, but Stab Giga Drains and Growth with Substitute is excellent tankiness. I also tried the league casually levelling to Cacturne, and I could do the whole thing without candies. Cacturne is good, but also, Emerald is pretty chill for single mon runs
@olavjorvik94
@olavjorvik94 2 жыл бұрын
@@tsawy6 yeah, I just wanted to see Emerald because I don’t like playthroughs of pokemon in other generations / games, where they’re not even possible to catch… Plus I prefer Leech Seed to Ingrain, BUT in a solo playthrough, I guess you’re right, it would be better. But at the same time, certain pokemon like Magneton and Skarmory, would need to be seeded to die, Ingrain wouldn’t help that. Can’t possibly take down Winona or Stevens Skarmory with Giga Drain and Faint Attack… Maybe with 6 x Growth…🤔🤷🏻‍♂️ Gonna go solo it now😂
@tsawy6
@tsawy6 2 жыл бұрын
@@olavjorvik94 Don't forget Drake's Altaria! I didn't bother grinding out the extra levels for Steven's Skarmory, but there's maybe a little hope with the way it likes to use toxic? The trouble is that they all have strong super effective flying attacks that make stalling with leech seed difficult...

Fun Fact: For gen 5, among all the broken Moody abusers (even Bidoof destroyed Ubers unironically), Octillery was probably the best one discluding Smeargles Baton Pass. It had the best typing among all of them and often times felt having like the best defensive stats, it's move combination (Scald and Flamethrower) also scared away Ferrothorn who would wall the others. So yeah, Octillery, congrats on being one of the strongest Pokemon ever

Octillery is one of my favorite gen 2 mons if not my favorite. I always liked octopi as a kid so when i saw that there was not only just an octopus pokemon but a fire breathing octopus pokemon i was like hell yea. As it's based on a cannon, Octillery learns pretty much all moves that are some kind of shot or beam. In later gens, it also gets access to moves like charge beam, sludge bomb, energy ball, signal beam and mud shot. Its coverage is honestly insane.

Typhlosion was pretty decent back in gen 2 as well since it could learn Thunder Punch. Super easy to just solo everything with Flamethrower/Thunder Punch/Earthquake
@cmck362
@cmck362 2 жыл бұрын
It's early moveset sucked in gen 2 though. It doesn't get ember until level 12 then doesn't get flame wheel until 31. It can't learn thunder or fire punch until it evolves at 36. Earthquake tm is in victory road so it has to settle for dig before that. Finally flamethrower isn't learned until level 60. Or after the E4 from the move tutor. It's got good stats and moves, but gets access to them way later than you'd like. It always feels like you're in a mid game power slump with it. Plus first gym has mud slap and third has roll out. Looks good on paper, but it doesn't translate well in practice.

@@cmck362 You're not wrong but as a kid I soloe'd everything with it. If you do a Solo run you WILL be level 60 during the elite four and you WILL one shot pretty much everything with fire stab that doesn't resist. The only gen I wasn't able to solo with JUST a starter was gen 3 and 5. Every other gen gets steamrolled by fighting all trainers with just the starter no other grinding.
@cmck362
@cmck362 2 жыл бұрын
@@aerrae5608 You're over leveled then if you're 60 during the E4. Just in this video he _finished_ it at 55. And I'm pretty sure typhlosion is in a slower exp category than octillery. Not saying you can't brute force it. Just that it isn't as good as you make it out to be and that its final learnset isn't what you have to slog through the game with.
@jakerockznoodles
@jakerockznoodles 2 жыл бұрын
Kadabra/Alakazam was better at making use of the elemental punches imo. It had access to them right by the route you find Abra on so you could use those moves in the 3rd gym without even being overlevelled (and its good speed pretty much ensured you'd hit first without being overlevelled too). Them being buy-able TMs also meant you could swap out which ones would be useful for a given scenario easily, even between E4 members. It's like they knew dark type would make the Abra line significantly worse with its previous learnset, so gave it this as a way of diversifying its move-pool.

Remoraid/Octillery to me was never a forgotten Pokemon. Its a great Pokemon with great abilitles (mostly the Moody ability) and it can learn moves that do great coverage for it like Flamethrower for grass types and even Mud Shot for electric types. Its great epsically in Sword & Shield with new moves it can learn and how awesome it looks when Dynamaxing. Tho I was hoping it got a Gigantamax form making it look more like a tank but whatever I suppose.

Never went out of my way to get it for my team or anything, but if I happened to get one, of course I was going to use it for something or other. Hey Scott, I’ve been binging your videos over the past couple weeks. Things have been pretty stressful lately, and listening to your solo playthroughs has been my latest go-to when I need a breather. I especially enjoy your generation 2 videos as I have fond memories of playing Silver on my Gameboy color, steamrolling the Elite Four with my level 100 Feraligatr and wondering why my level 99 Slowbro hasn’t evolved into a Slowking yet. Octillery was one of my favorite Pokémon as a kid. I remember making special trips to the Goldenrod Department Store to buy fresh water from the vending machine on the roof, because in my mind Octillery deserved a refreshing drink after having me drag him around all day. (to be 10 years old again) Anyway, I just want to say thank you for helping me get through the days, and for the nostalgia trip. I hope you know you make a difference. I look forward to watching your Forretress and Shuckle playthroughs one day. Keep up the good work.

Octillery is my absolute favourite Pokemon so I'm very excited to see a challenge run with it. And from my favourite runner as well! Thank you for showcasing everything that makes Octillery such a cool and unique mon. This video made my day. The funny thing is that it's movepool is still relatively small in this gen. It gets so much more coverage options in later gens which allows it to be a very flexible Pokemon. Just like octopuses are in real life. Another reason for the movepool seems to be that it is also based on a tank so it gets a lot of beam/blast/etc moves. Also, an octopus can move quite fast by utilizing the water around it to propel itself, it's pretty awesome.

Thanks for doing this playthrough, I have been waiting for this playthrough for so long. Octillery is my favourite water pokemon, because of it's animation in the gen 2 games(it's so cute when it's moving its tentacles, with it's unimpressed eyes, demanding for respect🤗). You've done well in this playthrough, maybe teaching flamethrower as fast as possible for the Jasmine fight, or keeping hidden power ground for the Red's pikachu maybe would have one shot it🤔. And as for the fact that, octillery(a water type 😂) able to learn flamethrower, it's probably due to it's original Japanese name, Octotanku, which is a combination between the 2 words of octopus and a tank, which resembles it's early bata sprite, so probably game freak didn't remove that, form it's early bata days. I hope you could do a gen 4 playthrough with this mighty octopus, to see how the physical special split would do for it. If you want a real challenge, then do a Smeargle run. 😉 In general, I really like your playthoughs and this one especially, means a lot to me, so thanks for playing with my favourite pokemon.☺️ And I really appreciate that you took about 3 hours of your life, trying different movesets for the red fight. Keep up the hard work 😄

Scott's Thoughts if he made videos about memes instead of Pokémon: "ahh 'my brother in christ.' I love that meme. As a kid my parents didn't know what memes were or let us have them, so I would spend hours hiding in the bathroom making my own memes. Back then Spongegar was my favorite, but I didn't have anyone to share it with. Nowadays me and my girlfriend send memes to each other all the time. That's girlfriend mention number 2 of the video. Anyways, so back in 2015, people didn't really know the mechanics of memes yet. Then came this meme called rare pepe which, [...]"

Not quite related to Octillery, but I feel like the fellow underloved Pokémon appreciators here would agree: If Magneton becomes a Steel type in Gold and Silver, why didn’t any Gen 1 Pokémon become dark type? I feel like Arbok, Fearow, or Pinsir were all menacing enough to deserve it. Arbok especially with its role in the anime and being able to learn like, literally every Dark type move in Gen 2.

I loved Octillery in Gen2, great movepool when diverse movepools actually made a pokemon unique. I was fortunate to have a Gameshark to catch whatever Pokemon I wanted to train at the start. I'd love to see this customizability offered in the main series games, but we can only dream...

I used this pokemon in the spaceworld demo romhack last year because it has an alternative design, so I expected it to be very good here. but this is just crazy. just goes to show that the ideal pokemon for these games are truly just bulky mixed attackers, and octillery is among the greatest of them

Excellent as usual. I hoped Octillery would do well and I was not disappointed. It was always one of my favourite especially due to it's movepool, ever since I had my Pokemon Silver Cartridge. So obviously when HGSS came out, it was part of my team and one of the few mons I trained up to level 100 in both Silver and Soul Silver. Not quite a forgotten Gen 2 Pokemon for me, in fact it is my personal favourite water type tied with Vaporeon. So who was my most forgotten Gen 2 pokemon, I don't really know. Girafarig? It was the only shiny I caught in Silver besides Gyarados, so not quite. Magcargo? Back then I was totally crazy over it because it was so rare and no one talked about it so I thought it was so unic in a way, I trained one up to level 100. So again, not quite. Glygar? Probably, but to be fair, since I had Pokemon Silver I couldn't even catch it. So, to be a bit more fair, I would say Stantler.

I feel like Remoraid/Octillery suffers from being in Gen 2 and as a result Remoraid is very easy to completely miss(only caught on Route 44 with a Super Rod in G/S and not even in C), along with being a Water Type which has so many Pokemon in it. It is an absolute unit being the second strongest Special Attacking Water-Type(behind Vaporeon), and the third strongest Physical Attacking Water-Type(Beingd Kingler and Gyarados) in Gen 2 being the only water type to exceed 100 in both Attack Stats at once. Its only real competition back then for a mixed-attacking Water Type would have been Kingdra who is held back by having a Gen 2 MovePool compared to Octillery's gen 2 MoveOcean.

3:33 I empathize with you on your frustration about Gligar not getting Earthquake in gen 2, I was hoping he'd be able to learn it since he's a GROUND type. But in gen 2, of course Game Freak treated Gligar like a bug type and not a ground type!

Fun fact: Back when I was a kid, Pokemon Crystal was new and dinosaurs roamed the Earth, Octillery happened to be one of my favorite Pokemon. The three beams he learns at lvl 22 (as a Remoraid) made me believe that "Oh my god, this Pokemon is so good, it can just super effective hit anything!!" (note that kid me did not know about STAB existing, or how much power any moves had) Over time, I just sort of forgot about it, but I am now glad that it got such a good finish here! Maybe I should give it another shot in a playthrough as well!

I first used Octillery in Ultra Sun, if you can believe it. I found a Remoraid and REALLY needed a water type so I said "screw it!" and tossed it on the team. Its moveset, plus the Sniper ability had me wrecking EVERYTHING! I love my squishy Doc Ock!

Octillery has been one of my favorites for many years. First off, the name "Octillery" is just about the perfect pokemon name. And second, of course, the ability to do strong, super effective damage to almost anything. I had never played Diamond and Pearl before the remakes came out recently. I had Octillery leading the party for almost the whole game just because when you don't know what the next trainer might throw at you, there's a pretty good chance Octillery will have something to say about it. The downside in normal play is that when you have a well-balanced team of 6 pokemon, Octillery can become redundant. For all the different types that Octillery can hit for good damage, you will probably have something else that can do even better. It's not like it becomes bad, it's just that its biggest strength gets watered down somewhat. My other favorite pokemon, Magneton, is my favorite for exactly the opposite reason. It does exactly one thing (thunderbolt) and does it extremely well. Not the best to have all by its lonesome, but what team doesn't need thunderbolt and 17 type resistances?
