To clarify on Counter: Yes, he said if you were hit by a water move, it would just miss. It did that every generation afterwards, and that's why they made "Mirror Coat" to cover the special moves. But to clarify for those who thought this, it would also miss if Ground, Flying, Rock, Bug, and Poison moves were used too. So a better example could have been used, but now hopefully people see how limited Counter really is on Gen 1
@jordanthejq122 жыл бұрын
And yet even this limited iteration of Counter sees legit use in competitive play (shout-out to Counter Chansey). It turns out that, especially in a game with such limited movepools, being able to clap the most common attacking type in the game (including Tauros and Snorlax, two of RBY OU's "Big Four') is a pretty useful trait.
@bitterzombie2 жыл бұрын
Fun fact, in RBY when the opponent hits themselves in confusion, it counts as a normal-type damage dealing attack. So counter, which always goes second, will follow it up by inflicting double that damage on the foe, sorta like the move Assurance that came about later. Its still quite limited as a combo, only Gengar and Magmar can learn confuse ray and counter, and only lickitung can learn supersonic & counter. But it was still quite a surprise when I discovered it on my "passive attacks only" playthrough. And it made gengar pretty viable in that context, as confusion damage was the only solid way to hit poison/grass types, and counter was the only damaging move I could use other than bide. It was still hit or miss, but really made confusion into a more potent status affliction for that run.
@Alienldr2 жыл бұрын
@@jordanthejq12 Agreed. Counter is limited, but when all physical types have limited moves (fighting only had a few. rock had rock throw and rock slide only. Bug was leech life, twineedle and pinmissle. Flying was peck, drill peck, and sky attack. Ground was dig and earthquake)... normal was the one with all the physical moves anyway. Unfortunately in competitive, Earthquake is everywhere. If Counter could deal with that one move, then most people wouldn't care about the limited usage.
@InsanityForce2 жыл бұрын
The weirdest use I know is Counter on Gengar. It lets you counter Explosion if you just lost another pokemon to it and the oponnent switchs out instead of using a move... It's mentioned on Gengar's page on Smogon.

01:40:00 To be honest, i think that using the average between real and game time doesn't make much sense. The purpose of GT is to evaluate how the pokemon would perform in ideal conditions, where the player makes no mistakes and have good RNG, and RT evaluates how the pokemon would perform in a speedrun, considering the consistency of each fight. Those are different things with different meanings, it makes no sense to use their average as a metric. Also, the RT itself is like a combination between GT and n⁰ of resets, there is no need to mix them.

Before watching the video: My bet is on Hitmonlee. Faster and higher attack. The only advantage Hitmonchan has are the elemental punches for coverage... which frankly, with a special stat of 35 is just going to be mostly useless (in Gen4, Hitmonchan actually might have the better cards because there the coverage would be insanely helpful, but not as long as it comes from his weaker special side). I can imagine that using Ice Punch against Lance might be useful? Maybe. But that's just one fight. Both of them will mainly fight with physical attacks, and there Hitmonlee simply has the better cards. Better stats and better moves. Maybe the fact that Hitmonchan has the better defense will help him to survive a couple of more hits than Hitmonlee, but frankly I doubt that this will make the difference. Especially since Hitmonlee will be able to hit first a lot more often than Hitmonchan. So yeah, Hitmonlee all the way and I'm pretty sure it's going to be fairly consistent. After watching the video (obviously spoiler): Yeah well... That went as expected X-D

With every video I see of Gen I Pokemon, it becomes more and more apparent that Game Freak were absolutely useless at giving Pokemon decent move pools in the beginning. I think they focused solely on trying to be thematic and it just so happened that all of Hitmonlee's kick moves had no choice but to be fighting type. Elemental punches made sense for Hitmonchan but then you think about it for 2 seconds longer and realise that it's an awful idea when types alone dictated which damage stat they're based off. Great video btw! Been binging your channel for the last week and while there are a million other Poketubers out there, the way you approach these videos are different with how you break down the numbers with the time, resets, movesets and stats shown on screen at all times. Plus, you have a comforting presence about you which makes these chill viewings.

I have started doing my own testing after watching the video and while I am admittedly not as proficient in certain aspects of the game I have seen some interesting results of my testing so far. Namely that the elemental punches are situationally useful and make certain areas faster and more consistent if planned properly. One big thing I did different is buying three Calcium instead of the Protein and Carbos that Scott did. I also didn't do Pokemon Tower til after Erika, instead fighting a few extra trainers along the way. By doing this Fire Punch was 2-3 shotting the Tangela without setup while still 2 shotting the following Weepinbell and Gloom. In addition this allowed me when I got to Pokemon Tower to 2 shot all the ghosts without Seismic Toss which gave me a bit more flexibility in my moveset. And as Scott found in his subsequent playthroughs Ice Punch is a consistent two hit against Rival Five's Sandslash when even at a higher level Body Slam is not a consistent two shot. It also makes Giovanni's Rhyhorn a one shot which was not shown in the video. I am hoping to continue testing and work on improving my ability to do the small things faster to see if I can improve on Scott's final time for Hitmonchan. While I know I won't be able to get it to be as fast as Hitmonlee was I can see it being at least closer in time with what I have been doing.
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon2 жыл бұрын
I love the idea of using the punches for Pokémon tower! That’s a great idea. Really frees up the moveset so that seismic toss can be used later for Agatha!

Fun fact, Hitmonlee was my first lv.100 pokemon when I got yellow, it was a monster against the elite four for me 😎

I think Agatha in Yellow is way less painful than her Red and Blue counterpart. Red and Blue Agatha has more trolly moves on all of her Ghosts and Night Shade is actually threatening, since it hits everything for set damage, even the Normals. In Yellow, yeah she still has her Confusion tactics, but her 1st Gengar does not have the Dream Eater combo or Night Shade. In fact, all of her Ghosts don't have Night Shade. Sure, they have Lick with 30% Para Chance, but they aren't nearly as threatening as Night Shade spam.

Yeah, Yellow Agatha is easier, but nearly every other trainer is harder in Yellow. For these two: Lance and the Champion specifically. The fixed movesets really did a lot to improve those trainers. Lance would just spam agility in RB because of the good AI paired with his garbage movesets.

I would always take hitmonchan as a kid in gen 1 and 3 for it’s coverage but got disappointed every single time! I knew that hitmonlee would be better but didn’t expect such dominance! You’re awesome Scott!

1st off: Haii Scott, it's been great to have new vids to watch from you, i am definitelly lucky to have found you ❤️ thank you, lots of love n hugs from Portugal! 2nd: Idk if this is a mechanic that's always been present with *Substitute* , but when you are under a *Substitute* in the more modern games, your substitute nullifies status! That and "sound" based moves go through Substitute. *Hyper Voice* and *Growl* are an example, you get straight up damaged through the *Substitute* like it isn't there! Do what you will with that info 🙏🏽

Nevermind. After proper analysis, i noticed you still get status in the substitute of Gen1 😐

I just love seeing the insane academical intellect people have of pokemon. Like, I feel I do too, but every video of Scott theres’s something new I learn in the comment sections where people clarify things that doesn’t have clear answers easily available to look up

The comments are always filled with amazing pieces of info. It’s amazing!

I really don’t think it should be necessary to restart the entire game because you overwrite a move by mistake. You should be allowed to just reset and add one to the reset counter. People make mistakes, and you shouldn’t go through so much more gaming just because of it. I’m sure all guys here agree. And btw, thanks so much for insane amounts of videos these last couple of weeks. You put out like 10 videos before Jrose gets out of the shower in the morning😂 No hate. You really helped us getting through the pandemic, when he seemed to stop posting as much. So thanks for that!

I completely agree with your other fan. It is much more engaging seeing the process of learning the strategies as you progress through the game. That’s my biggest criticism with MDBs videos, they just kept getting shorter and shorter. For me it started to become more of a just on 20 minute highlights reel without much explanation. Some were like ‘This gym leader wasn’t hard I just spammed this move for their whole team’ and before you knew it he was at the elite 4 and you realise you hadn’t really seen any growth or learning of strategy. I get that he’s got a lot of content that he produces on a weekly basis but but just makes for a still entertaining but quite forgettable video. You’ve got the top spot for quality of detail of your runs and dedication to your craft. From your first video to now you’ve come so far and refined so much.

I like your 1st run fuck up explained then then quick 2nd run optimization time comparison improvements. (I struggled here the first time but this is how I bested it this time )

On the video that I commented and asked for the Hitmons' vs and you said that I would see why I kept wondering the motive ever since and was eager to watch it and LOL you were right, the first playthrough was almost walk in the park for lee while chan struggled a lot on the early game and it showed for the rest of the game. I knew Hitmonlee was a beast, oddly enough I fell in love with it playing pokémon sword because we can capture a Tyrogue early on and I evolved my into a "Lee" and after captured a digglet and the duo lee and dugtrio carried the whole game like a breeze. High Jump Kick has a tremendous 130 power on newer games making it steamroll the game. But never expected that his counterpart would be so less powerful (at least on gen 1). I'm a gen 1 fan and usually on newer games prefer to use them. Sorry for the long comment, I got carried away with excitement. Thanks a lot for the great content, you're the best pokémon youtuber!
