So beautiful! Thank you for letting us hear from the plant breeders. It's nice to see a face behind the years of hard work.

A year later & imagine my surprise to see some gorgeous specimens in a hot parking lot bed, just north of Atlanta. The poor things had been sheared & doubtless neglected. I estimate the professional building complex at 7-10 years old & these were installed then, likely landscape size 15 gallon. In November, they had impressive form & bloom. They seemed to be "October Magic Orchid" & had performed very well in rather poor conditions. Seeing them made me reconsider using them to replace overgrown Bufordi Holly on our tall front foundation. I was concerned it was too sunny but no more so than an open parking lot! Mature size seen was conical at 5-6' tall & 3-4' wide.

I planted 2 white Shi Shi Camellias this year after hearing you talk about them in a video a while back. They are covered in blooms now and are absolutely stunning! Another great Jim recommendation! It was really interesting to hear from the breeder in this video!

I've been adding more Camellias to my garden in the last few years. I'm a northern transplant of 30 yrs. and embarrassed to say it has taken me so long to really appreciate their beauty. I will be looking for the October Magic series to add to my garden.

I purchased my very 1st *October Magic Ruby* , SLPC 3g - 2 of them!. Also picked up 2 *William Lanier Hunt* sasanquas (Monrovia, 3g). I'm now pondering the best placement for all 4, given the morning shade, afternoon sun where there's space. Also need a home for a 2 ft high/wide *April Series japonica: April Blush* . Considering keeping it shrub form near a mature, tree form japonica. It will get afternoon sun, but the 15 year old japonica is doing okay there since being moved 6 yrs ago.

I just bought 3 of these, October Magic Snow planted and mulched. It wax 80° Sunday then Monday night we had a freeze warning. I really hope this breed is hardy enough and won't die like all our plants did during the flash freeze. Or will the blooms just drop off? Great videos. Very informative. Thank you!!

Only halfway through and this is very interesting. I would love to hear more talk about plant breeding and whatnot. Really amazing stuff, I've always wondered if those supermarket-style planets were truly bred that way or if they were genetically modified somehow.

This was a wonderful presentation. It's always helpful to hear from the breeder. Did Mr. Green divulge any of the parents of these more compact plants? Assuming it's probably a trade secret?

Do you know whether any breeders of camellias are also selecting for cold tolerance? I know that there are plants in the "April series" that are rated to zone 6A, but I am reluctant to plant them since in New England, the winters can be unpredictable....

It will be fine in a container, but you will need to protect them in the coldest part of the winter

Which sasanqua is MOST cold hardy, Jim? I can grow japonica and sinensis in my zone 7 garden SW of Richmond, VA, but I have no luck whatsoever with sasanquas--they all die the first serious winter we have here.

For zone 6b consider ‘Snow Flurry’, ‘Long Island Pink’, ‘Ashton’s Ballet’ - so many others - if the October Magic series doesn’t work for you. In the northern reaches of their hardiness, you may consider a breathable covering during the coldest part of the winter until they get better established.

Oh, no. Now I want to plant even more camellia sasanquas!🤣 Is there one that naturally stays under five five tall? I want to plant some under a maple tree.❤

The Shi Shi Gashera is a smaller variety. It a good foundation plant that is 3x3. I purchased 3 in March and planted in containers after looking at another video. Now I’m November all 3 are loaded with blooms they just haven’t opened yet. I can’t wait. Check out Jim’s video on those.
