One of the things I love about the movie is hiw much the Dad reminds me of my dad. i mean, everything from the walk, physique, yes the personality, the way his his hair was combed, the way he dressed..his job (my dad was a foreman in a steel mill) even his work clothes were nearly identical, other than my dad's hardhat not having a light. I mean, its almost eerie, and a little comforting to watch, since I list Dad when I was 19 and he was only 57. Like this dad, mine could be bad tempered and not be always pleasant to be around, but we always knew he loved us. He would have never wanted us to work in the mill, though. He wanted us to be doctors or lawyers or something lol.

Super hard working and HIGHLY intelligent, but like most of the kids in this movie he never had the opportunity to go to college, raised dirt poor in a small town in northern Minnesota, going to high school right around exactly the time this movie takes place. This movie came out the same year we lost him.

The teacher that inspired me most was my highschool computer lab teacher, César Moliné. I'm still in touch with him, 30 years later.

This is one of my faves and I recommend regularly to reaction channels! Great “sci Fi” - “Gattaca” an absolute must watch…fabulous movie. “Taking Chance”, “October Sky” and “Gattaca” are all pretty much perfect films in my opinion.

I love that you guys love this movie. It's one of my favorites!

It's a great book, too, written by Homer himself.

@MrKnights Have you checked out Hidden Figures yet? If not, I hope that you do. It’s about women who did most of the calculations for the takeoff and landing of John Glenn’s 1st rocket flight for NASA. True Story too (always the best).

Chris Cooper has been in a lot of movies, sometimes a bad guy (Bourne Identity). My two favorites though are Lone Star, and as a supporting actor in Lonesome Dove. I’m 73 and grew up on the prairie in Osage County Oklahoma. 15 miles from the nearest town so no light bleed on the horizon and no neighbors within sight, the nights were black but great and the stars seemed so close. Then came Sputnik during the Cold War and we’d go out at night and watch it glow as it went over. The fear was real, in school practicing stop-drop-roll and getting under desks with our hands covering our neck. This movie is great and glad you all viewed it.

In real life, Homer's dad was very supportive. All the animosity was made up to provide a little drama for the movie.

Since you liked this film, I highly recommend watching "Frequency" released in 2000 and starred Dennis Quaid. Great film!

The memoir was titled “Rocket Boys”. Mrs. Hickam had saved money she made by investing in the stock market and Homer Sr. didn’t know about it. She wanted to send her son Homer to college and supported the rocket building. She told him to prove that he was brighter than his father though he was.

Iron Sky then October Sky. Hmm. I see a pattern. What's next? FIre in the Sky? or perhaps Vanilla Sky?

"The Iron Giant" (1999), the animated, Sputnik-era movie bookend to "October Sky.";)
