After watching this dude catch fish for a year now, I'm ready to sell my Triton and canoe and start Yak fishing. Dealing with jerks on the lakes, the attitudes of bass tournaments and the high costs of gas and oil and battery's has me looking for a more simple way. It all just doesn't seem as fun as this.

A most enjoyable outcast fishing day in October when you expect the good time for smallies or largies is about to be over and you grab those final moments. As always this video is a real treat to myself at the end of my day. By the way, I also had an anecdote similar to yours with that heron. It was with a “martín pescador” ( a beautiful blue coloured Eurasian fishing bird) which attacked my jerkbait repeatedly.

Nice smallmouths Zara Spooks & jumpin minnows are great baits! The weighing & measuring isn’t all that? Most fishermen can guess the size & weight just by looking and beginners aren’t going know what a nice smallie is until they start catching them! The quick release is the cats ass!

Thanks! I think that first fish was around 5lbs. The scale reading seemed a little light so when I got home I threw a 5lb weight on it and it said something like 4-2. That’s one reason I usually just get length measurements instead of weighing fish, I don’t trust those scales much.

Matt, What’s with the equipment change. You went from top of the line rod and reel to middle of the road ones. Don’t get me wrong that is the only thing I buy is middle of the road rods and reels and while on sale at that. I have a Quantum Icon PT reel and love it. Out performs $200 reels. Interesting perspective when you can call a 3Lbs smallie a dink! 40 degrees you are a hearty person that is very cold to most of us and on a Yak with no gloves, I am impressed. Bottom line what are your thoughts about the rod and reel, how do you like or dislike them. I have a St Croix Triumph and Premier and love them both, they compare well to higher priced spinning rods.
@ndyakangler5 жыл бұрын
The Bass X rod was kind of an impulse buy, saw one at the local store and thought it seemed really nice for $100. I like it though and might make it my river topwater rod so I don’t have to put the Legend Tournament through the abuse when I don’t need that sensitive of a rod. Plus the Bass X is probably more in the price range the average person watching this video is willing to spend for a fishing rod. Those LT’s are expensive! I do have a few Triumph rods too and the Bass X is definitely a step up from those.
@telemarkmann68705 жыл бұрын
Matt, I wished they made the Bass X rod in med/lt Xfast 6-10 line, 1/8 lure weight like the Legend Tournament model. If they did I would buy it. When I was researching bait cast rods this was high on my list except for the power rating it was not low enough to toss the light weight lures I use. I already have bait cast poles rated for 8-14 line and they do not load up enough with lighter lures. You did not address the reel question. How do you like it and how does it stack up against your Smoke or MGX reels (I did a quick review of older videos and thought you used both spinning and bait cast MGX reels but could not confirm that today). In my school of thought price does not alway equate to superior performance or quality.

Do you prefer the spook or the whopper plopper? You have me hooked on the plopper here in KS/MO line. Nothing big but I catch a ton more fish here with it.

New bass fisherman here with a question. How do you determine how long the top water bite goes for? Im in Oregon so it's still warmer than ND but colder than down south. Also, notice you like the red/white spook as you've used it previously. How come that color as opposed to more natural colors? Thanks for any insight.
@ndyakangler Жыл бұрын
Over the years I’ve found around 52 degree water temp is when the topwater bite is pretty much done, usually a week or two into October here. I always liked that the redhead spook showed up well on camera while being fished, and the fish seemed to like it too!

@ndyakangler5 жыл бұрын
My fish finder shows the temperature but I don't bring it along very often unless I'm on a larger body of water and looking for deep structure. I've found around 52 degrees is when the smallmouth lose interest in topwater though and I can usually dip my hand in the water and take a guess as to whether it's that warm or not from having my temperature gauge with in the past. I don't keep a journal but I have all my video footage from the past five years backed up on hard drives. I'll look through those every now to see what worked and when. I've spent a lot of time on this river system the past seven years too so I usually have a pretty good idea of what the bass will be up to any time of year. Except for winter, still trying to find them through the ice!
