It may be the last chance for topwater action this year in MN so I tie on a Spook and go looking for some big smallmouth!

2:52 was by far one of my favorite catches you made on the channel. From the way it hit the top of the water to the sheer size of the thing. What an incredible catch!

After watching this dude catch fish for a year now, I'm ready to sell my Triton and canoe and start Yak fishing. Dealing with jerks on the lakes, the attitudes of bass tournaments and the high costs of gas and oil and battery's has me looking for a more simple way. It all just doesn't seem as fun as this.

I agree with Jon Boll, I havnt caught very many 18" plus and I get happy when I catch a 13-15" fish although I have good rivers near me neither are as good of a smallmouth fishery as any of the lakes or streams in this guys area.

A most enjoyable outcast fishing day in October when you expect the good time for smallies or largies is about to be over and you grab those final moments. As always this video is a real treat to myself at the end of my day. By the way, I also had an anecdote similar to yours with that heron. It was with a “martín pescador” ( a beautiful blue coloured Eurasian fishing bird) which attacked my jerkbait repeatedly.

As a kid growing up on Long Island sound, we'd tie snapper blues right to our line, and throw it out so the seagulls would pick it up, and try to fly away with it...or so they thought. : )

Heck I have an old wright Mcagill eagle claw pole I picked up in the 70's cost me 10 bucks I think.. caught more fish with that ole pole that I can even remember.. still got it and it still catches fish! A hundred buck seem like a lot of money to spend on a pole to me.. Geez we just might start callin' you the bird man!...... Just curious, do you carry a thermometer with you when fishing? Do you happen to keep a fishing journal? I like your total approach to sm fishing and have learned a lot watching your videos. I an constantly experimenting on the river with different lures and techniques. You are the consummate pro!
@ndyakangler4 жыл бұрын
My fish finder shows the temperature but I don't bring it along very often unless I'm on a larger body of water and looking for deep structure. I've found around 52 degrees is when the smallmouth lose interest in topwater though and I can usually dip my hand in the water and take a guess as to whether it's that warm or not from having my temperature gauge with in the past. I don't keep a journal but I have all my video footage from the past five years backed up on hard drives. I'll look through those every now to see what worked and when. I've spent a lot of time on this river system the past seven years too so I usually have a pretty good idea of what the bass will be up to any time of year. Except for winter, still trying to find them through the ice!
@michaelbyrne88604 жыл бұрын
Nice smallmouths Zara Spooks & jumpin minnows are great baits! The weighing & measuring isn’t all that? Most fishermen can guess the size & weight just by looking and beginners aren’t going know what a nice smallie is until they start catching them! The quick release is the cats ass!

Great vid...I guessed 4lb 3oz on that first smallie! Pretty damn close
@ndyakangler4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I think that first fish was around 5lbs. The scale reading seemed a little light so when I got home I threw a 5lb weight on it and it said something like 4-2. That’s one reason I usually just get length measurements instead of weighing fish, I don’t trust those scales much.

water temp is already down to 50 in northern idaho. fished my favorite lake for smallies with a friend and all we got were a couple largies and a brown trout. I need to move to wamer minnesota lol

I just got off the water and it was 42 degrees here in MN today after three days of low 30’s air temps and a snow storm. The bass were hungry though!
@daleowen26064 жыл бұрын
Man. I tried a whopper plopper 90. Rattle trap, and a jerkbait. Not a single bass for me. Just the trout. A bad day at this lake used to be 10-15 smallies only lol
@ndyakangler4 жыл бұрын
52 degree water is usually the point where they seem to lose interest in topwater. A jerkbait should be good below that though. I’ll throw those, jigs, and wacky worms most of the time from now until it ices up.
@daleowen26064 жыл бұрын
I tried a bitsy bug jig with a yum chunky crawl trailer and a whacky rigged yum dinger. Not a sniff. My friend got one on a jerkbait and one on a roostertail. Before they loved whopper ploppers, cranks, and whacky rigs

Love your videos!! I have a question. What would be your first choice presentation after the water cools and the top water bite goes away? 🎣👍🏻🔥
@ndyakangler4 жыл бұрын
Usually a jig or a jerk bait, or a wacky worm if it’s a calm sunny day and the fish move shallow. I was getting them on a Bass Assassin Elite Shiner on a 3/16oz jig today in 42 degree water.
