I thought it was unfair to weigh the X8 down. It already has the handicap of 4 props going through "dirty" air so matching the weights of the 2 drones was like taking away the advantage of the X8 but not giving its disadvantage to the octo. I think the octo would've still won but it might have been better matched.
@LetsFlyRC3 жыл бұрын
Even if you add the 1lbs of weight of the ballast, the octo still lifted more.

@drone-solutionz80133 жыл бұрын
A lot of people commenting on the added weight to the x8 being unfair, but the benefit of an octo is the ability to throw larger props which they didn't do. In their test they effectively handy capped both drones by matching weights and prop sizes. In the context of the "matched" thrust test I can see why they did it. What they should have then tried is a test in "best" configuration. So the x8 gets its light weight benefit, but the Octo frame gets to use bigger props to maximise its thrust to weight ratio.
@jerryzhang1582 жыл бұрын
the x8 was just a converted fpv drone, if they extended the arms to have the same length as the octo the x8 could get massive props, but because they were so close together in the vid the x8 wasn't optimal

Why did you put the extra weight on the x8? From a scientific point of view that was the wrong thing to do. You can't compare two different designs by nullifying design features. A bonus if an x8 is it weighs less. Its a trade off between size convenience, thrust and weight. Could you redo this without stacking the odds against the x8? It still won't lift as much but it should outfly it.
@Tymopta3 жыл бұрын
They stated that the battery was 500g. That's 1.1 pounds. Add that to the weight it lifted and it's still less than the octo. Moot point.
@nfnworldpeace19923 жыл бұрын
well they technically they tested 4 vs 8 propstreams and with the weight being equal my guess is that the props stacking is canceling out or at least greatly reducing the power those props can put out this is further shown in the X8 where its way earlier at max throttle since half the props put out almost no lift there. this is also seen in biplanes wikipedia qoute: In a biplane aircraft, two wings are placed one above the other. Each provides part of the lift, although they are not able to produce twice as much lift as a single wing of similar size and shape because the upper and the lower are working on nearly the same portion of the atmosphere and thus interfere with each other's behaviour. In a biplane configuration with no stagger from the upper wing to the lower wing, the lift coefficient is reduced by 10 to 15 percent compared to that of a monoplane using the same airfoil and aspect ratio[1]

Test how it responds to a motor failure. Seems a benefit to an X8 with a redundant motor could help you get home if 1 motor went down. Also an X8 and how much real thrust is gained versus a regular quad. Also taggering prop pitch so bottom props are not stalling out. Maybe next comparing something an octo with 8 motors and 5in props might need to compare total thrust ouput to something like a regular quad with say 4 8 inch props in same thrust range.

Radial setup is 20% more efficient than coaxial. The latter is an addition to make a more portable solution, more powerful. A radial drone is bulkier and more powerful but less agile. If by any means, one can attach a gimbal on the lower side of an X8, I don't see the benefits then of a radial octocopter beyond the lift strength.

I don’t understand why the battery was added to the X8 to make the weights the same, one of the advantages for doing a stacked motor setup like that is for less weight contrary to an octocopter because less frame, so one of its advantages from an octocopter is just removed for these tests, I don’t think it would’ve affected the weight lifting and the tug of war, but the handling test with how it felt “heavy” probably would have been judged differently
