I'm still faIrly new and trying rates out but lately, the last 3 or 4 quads I've built I've set up the same rates that I think are CLOSE to where I'll end up. These give me the most speed while maintaining control. I did 3 different "tests" to help me come up with these numbers. First I determined center sensitivity and I determined that by cruising at a decent speed and maintaining control and being able to stay on track of a "flowy line" without going to full deflection. Then to determine max I hovered 3-4ft off the ground and wanted to be able to chop throttle and flip or roll in any direction and stop on time to raise the throttle to return to hover without too much correction or bouncing off the ground. As for Expo, I went with a scientific approach where 3 is my lucky number and liked the first expo I set/tried and dammit I can use all the luck I can get! All in all, it turned out to be a comfortable transition for my style. Sorry for the long post that probably runs longer than the vid but you asked for my rates man! I may try and even out pitch and yaw with roll but for some reason I like the different max like this. I fly "Actual" rates and here they are: Center Max Expo Roll 90 980 0.33 Pitch 90 880 0.33 Yaw 90 780 0.03 Thanks for all the amazing vids you post. I really enjoy your style of videos and you're one helluva pilot!

Interesting way of determining center stick rates. I've been using Actual Rates for a while. I would have never thought to keep the rates linear to figure out the center sensitivity then add the max rate later. Then adjust the expo to how early or late in the curve you want to increase the movement. Every time I go out, I evaluate if I need to make any tweaks. It's the low end I still adjust so I can move between trees without making huge shifts.

If you don't fly LOS at all (like for me only for hand-catch) then I see no point in doing that test before FPV test... If the rates are way off to my liking then I still will be able somewhat manage to bring my quad back safely in FPV, rather then LOS where I feel is more risk. Other than that, great video. Thanks Stingy!
@henrischomacker60972 жыл бұрын
The question about how much expo is always a thing in discussions with my FPV friends. And imho the screenshot at 1:10 of your rates settings could say very much, but unfortunately looses a lot of ability of showing your general concept of setting up expo. When I first setup a new quad, I take a first flight and adjust my desired rotations per second. This may be a bit different on every quad because of geometry or size. To ensure I then always have the same feeling of expo, I resize the "Rates Preview" curve so that is has the shape of a square. If it has the size of a square I can visually compare the shape of the curve with the shapes of curves of other setups and can directly get a pretty presize picture of how the expo of this setup will feel. Just by taking a look at the curve. If the curve iamge is stretched in any way, it get's really difficult to assume the feel of the expo curve, expessially if you want to imagine how much expo you will feel at a given gas point. OK, it's also possible to get an impression about the expo curve if all grafics of curves have differnt scales, but it's much easier to get a direct feeling about the expo behavier if they are all in the same scale. Imho. the size relation x/y should absolutely be fixed for this graph in Betaflight, so you may change it's size, but not it's size relations. In your next videos, if you show this curve, could you please ensure you have it scaled up like a square? I would really thank you very much. BTW: Great video ;-)

So I haven't flown in about 3-4 years now. Recently got a DJI HD setup and built some new 5"/6" quads. So BF changed how rates are now? I'm guessing I just need to use that calculator to figure new settings like my old ones? I think I was at 1183 with 0.73 expo. But I do plan on adjusting them more tighter to my flying now and take a bit more seriously in setting them.

i really prefer the very simple curve of Raceflight rates in Betaflight, i use 720 max, and varying amounts of exponential, no Acro+. all the other configurations use some strange busted idea of what an "exponential" curve is. a true exponential curve is one that has a straight line derivitave. none of the other configs do that, which i think the logic behind it is most pilots prefer a steeper curve.
