The Index controllers are amazing but the only game worth playing that really makes use of them is Alyx. I'm glad I have them for that game but that wouldn't be the one reason I'd choose an Index over a Quest 2. I bought the Quest just for being able to use Gravity Sketch outside of my office but it has ended up mostly replacing my Index. There is just no accounting for user friendliness of the Quest, it's so quick to turn on (literally automatically turns on when you put it on your head) that it's effortless. The Index however, despite being set up always feels like just enough of a pain in the ass that I can't be bothered to use it. Since getting the Quest 2 I play way more VR than I did before simply because the system doesn't get in the way of me wanting to use it.

I got into VR with Quest 2 can't remember how many months ago. Never would have gotten in to VR without being able to try it so cheaply, but I discovered it was amazing and became a VR junkie. Was on the fence, but ended up getting an Index...and I have not regretted it for a second. Quest 2 is great, but... I really prefer the Index. It's just so much more comfortable. I tried multiple head straps for the Quest, I like the halo one the best, but still... It's just so heavy. Might not seem like much at first, but after a few hours...the difference in weight makes a huge difference. And for PC VR, especially Steam games...just a better experience generally. Yeah, you can get a link cable... Virtual Desktop actually works really well for me, better than link cable...but neither can beat the combined Display Port, USB3, and dedicated AC adaptor of the Index. I thought the cables would be a downside, but in practice... I don't have enough room that I can roam around...even if I turn around in place, I'm more likely to hit something, so I just keep my feet planted. So I'd rather just have a cable and not worry about having to run out of power. I usually end up playing my Quest with it plugged in to my MacBook charger so I don't run out of power anyway. But the Index's cable is conveniently behind my back, but with the Quest, it hangs annoyingly over my shoulder. The better FOV is really nice. The controllers...pretty good, but even though they do have more of a premium feel vs the cheap plastic of the Quest, I'll actually give points to Quest, because the Index controllers restrict the range of motion of your wrists, and they give me callouses. But overall, I prefer using Index and am annoyed when I need to use Quest for some reason now. TL;DR: Quest 2 is a great way to get into VR, the value for the money is incredible... And it's perfectly adequate for PC VR. If you can't or don't want an Index or anything else, you're not missing out on THAT much. But if you have the money to spare and want the best PC VR experience you can get for $1K or less...The Index is totally worth it.
@quinn67862 жыл бұрын
I got both. I got the index on release, and I just got the quest 2 a week ago. I agree the quest does feel like it will be more durable. So far I've had to replace my index controllers through the warranty once, and I've had to replace the headset itself due to the speakers quit working. It was actually after my 1 year warranty and valve still offered to replace the headset which was awesome, granted it was only a month or two after my warranty expired. If I had to chose one and was on a budget id get the oculus, and even if you have a pc you can get the link cable and run any steam vr game. I don't agree with what you said about the base stations, here they are 100 for an extra, and it comes with two in the box, it helps if you buy one more (3 total). I don't turn them on individually each time, they go into sleep mode and when I turn on steam vr they fire right up, and I do not hear a sound from them unless extremely close, almost ear resting on them. You don't have to mount it to a wall, you can use a stand or set them on a shelf if you have one. So far after a few year they haven't failed on me. Then again, its nice to not have to worry about base stations at all. I love being able to walk any wear in my house and play my quest with a quick set up.

if they truely are making Deckard id imagine one of the reasons itl release later rather then sooner, is they likely want to put it through alot of Qualty Assurance tests before they begin mass producing for consumers. because their is just know they would want a index 2.0 situation where they have to constantly fill out RMA's and lose out on profit potential due to having to replace everyones hardware for free, hardware thats likely costs hundreds of dollors per componant to build, while ya it wont hurt their bottom line and sink them since they make 95% of their money via Steam, and some of it via index and deck sales, that still a alot of money being thrown away. ultimately as someone who wants to get into VR and wanted a Index, after learning about all the Quality Control issues, im going have to swear off on the index, and likely settle for a Quest 2 for now, get that on my Birthday (July 3rd) in 2 weeks, along with a link cable, and daily drive that for my VR headset til Deckard releases. im not willing to deal with likely having to RMA shit every couple of months. and potentially being SOL if things break out of warrenty, even if the warrenty was 3 years id have to say no. a $1319 (im Canadian) Device that is very prone to breaking is inexcusable to me. the main things for me, is i also plan to exercise with it, and i dont want to potentially destroy my headset from sweat in the process, and have to RMA it or lose out on $600, the other side tho im wanting to get into something like Pavlov and i know you need good tracking for that. but if i do have to make a decision, ill put up with the somewhat less reliable tracking during a compeitive Shooter game if it means i dont brick my Headset from too much sweat seaping into the lenses

I, unironically, have the exact opposite experience in the controllers section for the Quest 2; my controller shell SNAPPED after hitting my clothes hamper which was close to me, so the durability isn’t all that good, (for me) and even though the material is white plastic and not painted plastic, the (what I’m assuming to be) matte coating scratched off along with color, on both the controllers and the headset itself. The tracking is fine though, and with the crack I just had to put some duct tape on the controller and let it seal for about a day. If you’re thinking about getting a Quest 2, don’t let my experience tailor your opinion, as this is a problem I’ve never seen on anyone else’s system. The Quest 2 is a great headset.

Having used both the Quest 2 and the Index, I honestly feel like a lot of the issues you bring up with the Index (mostly in reference to the base stations) are unfairly embellished. I agree with the controllers being uncomfortable after a while and the lenses potentially being an issue, but I've simply kept my base stations in standby mode for a long while now with no problems. Don't have to individually turn them on that way. I do realize this will probably be an issue later on down the line, but I also feel that by the point that does become a problem VR will have advanced to the point where I'd probably be considering upgrading to a new headset anyway. Also, to be fair, the setup on the Index is mostly a one-time thing unless you move the base stations or decide to completely move the setup to a different room, whereas you have to set up your guardian on the Quest 2 every time you play in a new location (unless you only play in the stationary mode). I also have some pretty high shelves I have mine placed on, so no need to mount them to the wall, which also made setup pretty simple. The sound from the base stations is also not noticeable to me at all unless I put the base stations directly up to my ears, though to be fair I do usually have a fan running or other sounds that may simply be drowning them out. All of the software-based issues are also at the fault of software developers and not the Index itself, so don't understand knocking it on that point. Again, having used both headsets, I can say that while I certainly love how convenient the Quest 2 is, I overall enjoy the Index more. To each their own, I suppose.

I can’t say I agree with a few of the things in the video, but I do see that we aren’t really looking at it the same way either. I see everything from whether or not I’m going to have a more premium, immersive experience while it seems you look more in flexibility as well as ease of use. Because of this I would have swapped a few of the things around leading to the index barely winning, but I guess it is different for different people. Edit: I also would have added a category that dealt with pcvr quality since if you want to plug in the q2 to a pc, it doesn’t blend as well with it as even the rift s does despite on paper the quest being superior. In that regard the index would definitely win as well.

Realistically the only downside of the Q2 is the shorter fov and the IPD adjustment. Other things like uncomfortable headstrap can be fixed with a $40 accessory. You can get knuckle straps for the Q2 for like 20
@nathanmallen2 жыл бұрын
But ideally, those issues shouldnt have to be fixed by throwing more money at it. If it’s a matter of personal preference, for sure, get an aftermarket head strap, but Facebook instead designed a better product, and didn’t strive to include it in the finished version. Instead, they made it a mandatory separate purchase. If you give a company an inch, they take a mile, and being compliant with having to buy items that make the product functional, after the fact of buying the product, is giving Facebook an inch. Just wait until they take the mile.

That person who has never had a FB account, does not know that Facebook has a ghost account about him, and know everything about him, and that person has no idea. Example #2 Facebook can brick your Quest anytime they feel like it. If you do or say anything Facebook does not like or your name is similar to someone who pissed of Facebook or Twitter, Facebook will terminate your account and your Quest will not work. People with Quest 2 made a 2nd account just to use their own Quest 2, have had their headsets bricked,(FYI, Bricked, means software disabled/disabled on purpose or by a failed or corrupted update, etc) because Facebook knew that it was not a "real" account. I can't say I agree on many of your Index points. The glare is barely noticeable to me. The lighthouse sensors, while expensive, have given me pretty much no issues. On top of that, there's a setting in SteamVR to put them in standby when you quit. You shouldn't ever have to plug in/turn on your sensors manually. They start up when you start SteamVR. Sweat has never been an issue for me. Just take care of your HMD. If you are sweating so much that the whole thing is soaked, take a break. Pop off the easy to remove magnetic face gasket and put it in front of a fan. I even wash em every once in a while in the sink with cold water. I've got an Index and a Quest 2, and it might be because I'm an enthusiast, but the Index wins hands down in almost every category for me. The one exception is portability/wires obviously. The Quest is super easy to haul around. Other than that, the Index provides a level of immersion that is leagues ahead. And the tracking is so much better (SO much). There are Expert+ songs in Beat Saber that I pretty much can't do on the Quest (or i barely make it) because the tracking can't keep up. I could go on.
@Yveldi3 жыл бұрын
You do seem to know what you're talking about, especially regarding the simple facts that the sensors don't have to be turned on and off manually. However, you would also be aware that your experience doesn't represent the majority of users, and if the Index is significantly more likely to break in a short time, it must be mentioned in a video that is also aimed towards those who might be saving money for a significant amount of time to be able to afford the Index. I am also interested in the Quest 2's tracking quality compared to the Valve Index, and the consensus of nearly everybody seems to be that the Quest 2's tracking has no perceivable issues. Again, even if you're doing worse with the Quest 2 on any game that you play, it may be placebo causing you to play worse as you put less trust into the controllers. It could even be that the brightness in your room isn't ideal when you play on the Quest 2.
@BlakeRosss3 жыл бұрын
@@Yveldi I agree that reliability issues should be pointed out, and I didn't really argue against that in my original post. However, there is an obvious, noticeable difference in tracking quality between the Index and the Quest 2 and I know it's not placebo. I've also seen several people online that have noticed the same thing. There's a reason most people that own both HMDs use the Index as their daily driver. It's not only the tracking speed (which is a big deal to me - it literally can't keep up in fast Experts+ Beat Saber songs), but it's also tracking blindspots when your hands are too far out to the side as well times where my hands fly away in-game when they are just sitting by my side in a resting position. I can't play Beat Saber seriously on my Quest 2 for these reasons. With other games, tracking errors aren't as noticeable/frustrating because you don't need to maintain a perfect combo with no mistakes. So for more casual games that aren't timing based, the controllers are fine (except for the hands flying away thing that sometimes happens). My lighting is fine; I play with the lights on. It's not just tracking that makes me want to use the Index, though. There are a ton of quality of life things from the Index that win me over. That's for another comment, though.

@@kev4378 I'm still pretty good on my Quest 2, don't get me wrong. But I'm way better on the Index. The tracking/responsiveness is just so much better, especially because I play at 144hz. This song is an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iajFfZmCaNaqn5o The part that I linked has you crossing your arms constantly and when I play this on the Quest, it misses half the time. Meanwhile, on the Index I never miss any blocks there. Who knows, maybe a big part of the issue is just the difference between Quest Beat Saber and PC beat saber. I don't have a link cable to try it out on PC with the Quest, and there's too much latency to play BS with Virtual Desktop.

@@brandonhvac4148 Every HMD has issues, for example the horrid Q2 headstraps that snap, or the facial interfaces that are giving people rashes, or the terrible IPD options, or the fact you have to charge the headset, or the video compression when linked to a PC, or the latency issues, or the FB account, or the not-so-great controllers compared to the CV1 versions, or the fact it's inside-out tracking, which, to be fair, isn't bad, but give me basestations/sensors anyday. Yeah I have an Oculus DK1 too, and got CV1 on release. It's all personal opinion mate. I'm not a massive fan of the Index either, but it's a very good headset - I personally don't get on with the controllers as much as the og Touch. The audio and fov and very small SDE, along with the best tracking available are all very important plus points. Also 144hz is a nice option, although I don't peraonlly use it. I have a Vive Pro 2 on order, but the Index shits on the Q2 imo. I personally would rather have wires because I trust the tech more than wireless: The wires don't bother me one bit, and until a standalone product comes with a DP (or even HDMI) connection to a PC then I'm not interested (there is a new HMD with this functionality actually, as you're likely aware). As I say it's all personal preference. I got rid of my Reverb G2 purely because the sweetspot/area of clarity was tiny - Some people agree with this but others also don't mind it. The only HMD I truely fell in love with is the Rift CV1. I still use it today for some apps. It's amazing.

As a Quest 2 owner, it pains me sometimes but when you look at it from a larger perspective you really are getting your money’s worth, I agree but I wouldn’t recommend it dependent on what people are looking for. I tell my friends that all the time and make sure to go over pros and cons with them. 😂 The audio glitch on my end is an easy fix for the most part (because sometimes when talking, friends inform me I sound muffled and in a fishbowl) but the fact that it struggles with connecting to a computer so much, despite its simple setup, makes me extremely frustrated. I use VRChat so it’s very limited for me as it was one of the things I wanted to buy the headset for but when plugged in it’s a dream and a perfect backup if anything goes out of commission since it’s standalone. @@DriftyWingss After over 1 year of usage I think I gave it a much worse for wear rep than it deserved and didn’t point out much of the pros. I’ll leave my second opinion below! PROS: - Affordable - Stand-alone / wireless - Optional PC tethering w/ link cable - Sharp display - Accurate tracking - Array of user settings - Newly provided silicone cover (for foam piece) -- CONS: - Facebook account required - Inner foam facial piece causes skin irritation (hence the better silicone cover) - Material headstrap needs constant adjustments (possibly due to stretching out over time) - Short battery life (2-3 hours) - Loses tracking at times - Has you redraw guardian every now and then - Graphics aren’t the greatest in stand-alone for some games (i.e. VRChat) -- FINAL THOUGHTS / ADVICE: The Quest 2 has a lot of good settings to mess with like… - Adjustable brightness - Adjustable night display - Dark / light mode - Hand tracking - Double tap passthrough - Virtual environments - Color correction (for those w/ deuternomaly, protanomaly, & tritanomaly color blindness) … and more. This could be helpful especially with comfortability. For users, I recommend messing with those especially the night display, brightness, & dark mode to help put less strain on the eyes. Virtual environments are also nice and some are either bright or dark, there’s no sound but ambience as a whole with the vibe can be important for some. I personally use “Cyber City”. Hand tracking is also convenient although playing should be done in a well-lit environment for easier tracking. Keep in mind also, some applications haven’t implemented the Quest 2’s hand tracking. Passthrough as well is also convenient and gives you the option to see the outside world even with the headset on your head so you don’t have to remove it if, let’s say, someone comes in your room to talk with you or you drop something and need to get it. If you have one, it’s also much better with play if you plug it in to a PC (as mentioned above with tethering) for PCVR games. I personally play on Steam and use SteamVR with it. Graphics on its own in games like VRChat isn’t the greatest. I haven’t tried things like Airlink and such but those are also available. All in all, with my final thoughts, it really just depends on what people like. Facebook can make or break a decision - although if they don’t mind it then I do recommend it as it’s good quality for the price although not quite as comfortable as some other headsets. I wouldn’t buy it right away though. They’re releasing other headsets and a Quest 3 or something of the sort at some point and there’s also other really good options that are already available. It’s really important to do the right research to find out what’s good for you. For what it is, this is good for me and I’m thinking of zombifying it with add-ons, trackers, etc. (as I mostly use it for VRChat) and just invest in it to make it really feel like it’s mine. ☺️

I disagree with you giving the point to the quest for tracking. First of all, I would say turning on your base stations would be part of setup, like how on the quest you have to redraw your guardian sometimes. However, if this is apart of tracking, I can say that turning on 4 base stations is wayy easier than redrawing a boundary every few times I turn on my quest. Also if that part of setup factors in to tracking, sometimes the guardian stops being tracked and you have to redraw it. Mid play session. It doesn't matter what you're doing, whether it be almost finishing ghost on expert+ on beatsaber, or going for a 3 pointer in echo arena (this of which has happened to me several times), it's not constant. Taking the effort to turn on base stations is less effort than turning a pc or your console on, and then you can just forget about them, and they're not at all audible while wearing the headset. And this isn't even starting on how jank the quest tracking can be sometimes. Sometimes a controller disconnects because you shook it too much, if it's not nearly in your veiw you can't do anything with it. A big example of this is gorilla tag, I commonly looked up at a branch I wanted to get to, so I struck the floor to jump. I don't go anywhere, so I have to look down, try again, then quickly look up hopefully in time to hit the next branch. Or playing stride, I would have my controllers disconnect commonly because of the constant shaking of the controllers used for running. Having said all that, is it really reasonable to say pressing literally one or two buttons to go into vr is too much hassle for decent tracking? No, it's literally as easy as turning on the lights, something that absolutely has to be done for the quest. Disclaimer, the quest tracking is great (don't let this comment stop you from buying the quest), it just pails in comparison to base station tracking, and this better tracking was very unfairly ranked in the video. Tl;dr "oh no, I have to press one button to track my headset, whatever shall I do?!" is a really dumb mindset + setup is not tracking Edit: looking back at the section of the video, drilling base stations into your wall is setup, and base stations dying is reliability. I understand the "having them in sight" can be annoying, but if you set your room up well it'll never be a problem. Buying an extra base station would be part of cost I think btw.
@epicnicity9162 жыл бұрын
You can disable guardian. I agree that the index tracking is better, however, you do need to drill a hole on your wall and mount a device that can fail and is expensive to replace, like said in the video. In my opinion, inside-out tracking will always win, just turn off guardian.
@BAeAirHawk2 жыл бұрын
@@epicnicity916 I don't think I've ever properly considered turning the guardian off before, as I've always thought what's the point, I'm just going to wack stuff in my room, but realistically speaking you are right, you can just put a small mat in the center of your playspace and probably be fine. Not everyone can turn it off though as getting a dev account isn't always something people want to go through, although getting that would be apart of setup. Also I think somehow base stations are pushed too much as something that needs drilling into walls, as I've heard of people putting them on stands or shelves, and I personally have them stuck to the wall with 3m command strips, which are sticky pads that attach them to the wall. Doesn't mean it's any less of a pain than drilling them in, but at least you don't need to drill the wall. Base stations failing are still a problem though. As I said though I do think that base stations failing are reliability and I can see that that reletively uncommon occurance would impact tracking(+ cost bc replacing them), but putting them up is setup, their price is cost, and getting a dev account for the guardian removal is apart of setup. My point is I feel the index tracking is downplayed much more than it should for factors that are much less to do with the tracking itself, and more the setup and cost.

Great in-depth review! Pretty thorough and felt mostly fair! The only thing about this review I honestly felt like I had to take with a grain of salt personally is the “reliability” discussion. And I’m not at all giving you a hard time over this, you were pretty fair and reasonable throughout the entire review! You mentioned the Index having “well documented” reliability issues but from what this review implied, all reliability issues were simply based on empirical data, ie: “based on reports I’ve seen online and my friends, it FEELS like there’s WAY more reports on one vs the other.” I think this is a super natural thing to do as a consumer of anything, and formally gathered data is way more work and sometimes not really possible to gather, but… I’m always very careful about at least making a distinction between empirical data and formally gathered data since empirical data is a hallmark folly of the internet- often the loudest voice is heard over the factual common voice. I have no idea if there is ACTUAL data collected on both these machines to make a factual comparison on reliability, which if there is, then I’d be very happy to treat the reliability discussion between these two devices as factual. Anyways! This was a great video that you put a ton of work into and it shows. This helps a little bit with my decision! But I’m still doing more research. I absolutely abhor Facebook but… that wireless option is SO appealing to me… because I hate wires. But also the index controllers are amazing, I love the no-handed grip feature…. So still gotta do more research but thanks for the video!

There's also the aspect that Valve Index was released more than 1 year before than the Quest 2, so of course you'll find more reports on Indexes failing, because at the time of the video index were doing almost 2 years, while Oculus Quest only existed for 6 months... also the drift issue was adressed so its not that common now, saying that they did nothing to fix the problems is a lie. And lets not forget Index is from steam, which has a platform where people can complain and bitch about it, while Oculus doesn't... so it's really easy to find people complaining about it there, while the Oculus won't be that easy, since it'll be all spread out over the internet. Also about the warranty is depends where you live, in Europe its 2 years warranty and now will be 3, because they need to respect European laws if they want to sell here. Another thing he said was that he had to turn the trackers 1 by 1, which was a problem, well just connect them into the same power supply, or leave them on since they enter standby if you close steam... I also don't understand why he complained about the noise they make, when you're playing you don't ear them, and why would you leave them running when you're not playing? Some of the complains seem to be there just for the sake of complaning.

(about 2200hrs of use) 3. expandability: with the index everything is compatible within the Steam VRs lighthouse eco system, you could use the crappy vive controllers of the vive pro if you wanted to, but you are also able to use upcomming controllers. You also have the ability to use trackers for full body tracking etc. but i understand this review in a mainstream view the quest is a winner, but the reason why they sell it so cheap is simply becasue you pay with your identidy for facebook. there is no way facebook makes any profit by just selling these based on the hardware.

As of 2022 I’m hoping they are going to fix some of the flaws with the valve index. I know they fixed some controller problems but that’s all I’ve heard. I am going to buy the valve index in the next couple months so hopefully it’s just as reliable as people like Jacksepticeye say it is.

I have had my index for only 2 days and I absolutely love the index. I have had a quest 2 for 1-2 years and it’s good but there are very serious issues I’ve experienced. 1# the graphics look like trash or you can connect it to your pc BUT if you don’t have a cable or a good internet connection you will have to sacrifice your graphics to get a decent experience. Unlike the index where I set it up and when I got on and NO LAG AT ALL, I haven’t experienced a single bit of lag since I got it which is surprising because I have had so much lag and framedrops with the quest when playing pcvr games LIKE REALLY BAD FRAMEDROPS like I could have 120 fps one second and than 3 fps the next which is not fun. 2# Although the index takes a bit to set up its really not that hard it only took 30-45 minutes for me but the quest took around 15-20 minutes and I was set. 3# the index is pretty comfortable but the faceplate can get annoying but the quest is even worse because it makes my face itch so much after only 45 minutes which is really annoying. I’m not going to continue on my rant about the quest because I’ve only had the index for a couple days so I think it may be to early to judge.

i regret buying the index sometimes, i already had my trackers from the vive and ended up spending the 750 on the controllers and the headset, my friends have the quest 2 and they seem to enjoy it, i love the beta hand tracking and how the screen door effect is removed for the quest 2, i’ve tried it and it’s worked great, there are some big issues i’ve had with the index though, i had to reinstall windows just to get the fucking thing working again, the valve is great but it’s not worth the money, the quality doesn’t match the price, if you’re gonna get the valve, i would highly consider the quest 2 with a link cable and elite straps👍

Index obviously has superior tracking to Q2! I leave my basestations on so no need ot turn them on, but if I do turn them off/on it's literally plugging the plug into the socket (no issue at all). Drilling a hole for the basestations takes 10 minutes and then you never need to touch them again. The best way to answer which of these 2 headsets to pick is to ask yourself "Can I afford the far superior headset (Index) and do I have a capable PC?" If not, you're stuck with Q2 anyway so the rest is irrelevant.

Happy to have chosen the quest 2. Its plug & play, comes with air link feature, its confortable with the elite strap, has a nice display/resolution, no screen door effect. Even the sound i personnally find it good enough, and in worst case, you still can put your gaming headset on. And now it comes with 120hz ! So for me, the only downside of this headset is thats you HAVE to have a facebook account to use it, and that the FOV is pretty low but overall i'm really happy with it !

I just got myself a quest 2 for christmas (for 250 US) and have been playing both native quest games as well as steam vr on a beefy rig, and have wondered how much better the experience could be to justify a 4x price increase. The only thing I noticed from watching game footage with the index was the individual bottom 3 finger tracking, which as you say is a novelty that will wear off almost immediately. I didn't do a ton of research before I bought the quest, I just got the only one that was in my budget and on sale, and I love it. Seeing this makes me pretty secure and confident that I'm not missing much and could even miss out on some things by "upgrading" to a headset that costs several times more. Having to set up wall mounted sensors, no grip button, worse lenses, worse controllers, etc. I'm glad my blind purchase was the correct one.
