Isn't explicitly a word, but here's what I love about it: Arte - noun. : an art movement originating in Italy in the 1960s characterized by experimentation with simple, everyday materials (such as paper, rags, or twigs) and *concerned with challenging conventional elitism in the mainstream art tradition* . Bellum - Latin for "war", A similar term is the US civil war word "antebellum" which refers to the time before (ante) the war (bellum). Here, Oculus Imperia kind of (re)invented a word, implying that The Lion has an artistic drive or desire in how he goes about warfare, conceptualized by challenging the accepted hierarchy of tactics and mainstream warfare traditions to achieve the result, while simultaneously attacking the pride/perceptions one may have in favour of another style. This just SOUNDS like The Lion, and why the Dreadwing most closely embodies the results of his perspective. Its grim work, and in reading more about Legion Destroyer Squads and the like, there is a general disdain or apprehension amongst the Imperium for this kind of warfare, but the Lion just calmly states, "this is art" and has one of the wings of the Hexagrammaton entirely dedicated to that style. The other legions did use destroyer squads and the like though. However they preffered not to. Some of the weapons contaminated the area they were used in for example. Or the legion dident want to use them because they thought they werent honrable weapons. But when a xenos reared its ugly head that warranted it, each legion would use destroyer squads if needed.

What a deliberately complex and convoluted legion structure the 1st had. Within the Dark Angels, you had: the Hexagrammaton, the six broad wings of combat specialization; then within or below or among that there were the Hosts, the Orders, and the Chapters. No one except the Lion really knew how the legion was precisely structured, but everyone knew he was at the center of it and the absolute master.

The one legion who get more of a chub over the Principia Belicosa than the Ultramarines. Looked forward to this for years, and although it is a bit too positive in places, I am so so glad the DA are coming into their own. Less of the Fallen emphasis and bad writing, more unique personality and a knightly theme that matches the Imperial Fists/EC as bladesmen, but remains respectfully independent as it should be.

I have found the original legions to be far more interesting than the later chapters. Thinking the first and the thirteenth primarily but pretty much all of the Legions have been so much more intersting. If the DA could get past the Fallen obsession it would make them more interesting and SO much more deadly to the Imperium's enemies. The legion is just so cool!

their geneseed's psychological effects allowed them to instinctively read a situation despite combat conditions allowing for them to not hesitate in their roles. A commander's adaptability to an opponent's manoeuver or change in battle order or a close combat specialist's paranoia in setting his pose in preparation to multiple attacks is what also made their legion the most adept in combat conditions.

This is why I always refer to the Lion and the Dark Angels as the best tacticians. Too many people call the Lion a strategist when that’s not his thing (he can do strategy very well, but tactics are his domain). They are the ones you send when you need someone who needs to be able to think on their feet. If you’re looking for a strategist then Guilliman is the best example because if you give him the right resources and enough prep time, then he will make a better long term plan than anyone else.

Only query I have is around the 19 minute mark; you mention ivory-clad terminators in the Deathwing, but I was under the impression that this only happened after the events of the historical account (short story by Bryan Ansell) 'Deathwing', where Deathwing terminators painted their armour ivory while undertaking a mission against all odds to cleanse the recruitment world from which they hailed of a genestealer infestation. What sort of color scheme have you used for your custom chapter? I’ve been a fan for many years, but only just about to settle in and paint some models. I really like the Angels of Absolution, but I’m wondering if they’d repaint their war-gear inherited from the DA ya know? Would they really repaint their terminator armor, bikes, speeders, and flyers? Maybe just their basic armor? I’m inclined to paint their war-gear in 30k legion colors, and only paint their soldiers as Angels of Absolution bone-white.

Throne of Terra, I never realized the Dark Angels had Men of Iron stashed away in their armory for when the crap hits the fan. While I am curious to see if the Space Marines and armies of the Imperium Nihilus truly begin to differentiate from their brothers I still think having the Dark Angels reunite their successors and effectively seize control over there would make for a great story. Imagine them breaking out their old equipment and effectively enslaving forge worlds to mass produce it making them a more arcane and ancient looking Astartes force while the armies on the Terra side of the rift continue rediscovering and advancing their tech.

The inquisition of ordo hereticus, the chaos cultist, the dark angels, assassin of the Officio Assassinorum, alpha legion operatives, mechanicus of mars, the blood angels, imperial household redactors. My head cannon is that while Oculus create even more redacted work, unknow that a few blocks from his place there is a all out war for who is going to take him for interrogation, clearly the inquisition gained the first round, but with each passing secrets that oculus put into record more people are into the fray. cue the "Mr. Burns(oculus) is Indestructible" meme. Love the 30K DarkAngels. Current DA don't do it for me but Great Crusade and Horus Heresy they where amazing and the books reflect this. Current 40K BloodAngels are the best, they have soul not cookie cutter like the Ultrasmurfs and they are not packed with plot armor. They fit the 40K theme perfect, a flawed savior that has to battle with control with flaws to defeat the enemy and uphold the Primarch's goals and ideals.

I suspect most DA fans, myself included, are more attracted to their 30k lore. Sadly the grim dark diminishes all things. Plus from a tabletop perspective, it would be dumb for the DA to be so versatile, and basically have everyone else’s toys, plus a bunch of their own. They’re still a very versatile chapter compared to most, while less generic than the Ultras. I love their unique model support, and there’s something about their history and decaying glory that I appreciate. I do like the Blood Angels a lot, but their aesthetic seems to be at odds with their awesomeness sometimes. Like the writers feel the need to do everything they can to make them glorious, because of the cursed trans-human vampire thing. Whereas DA are often written as less than ideal, but trans-human space knights are undeniably cool. Since I was a child the DA, BA, and Ultras will always be the big three to me. Imperium Secundus just reinforced that for me. If only we could have the golden hawk boy and the Lion back, the Imperium’s enemies would cry for mercy.

@@wavepool4501 ya I don't dislike the ascetic or tabletop models of the 40K DA but the writers don't do much with them other then them screwing over other Imperium forces for the Fallen. If they just showed some more campaigns with them against Chaos or Xenos with no fallen it would make them better lore wise. I just reread the Imperium Secundus in my re read of the Horus Heresy and it was good and showed highlights of each legion. The DA of 30K are hands down the strongest Legion. They have size, tech and ships that are hard to match for size and cannot be matched for the other 2 factors. But don't want them to OP in 40K so they use the Fallen as a plot device but they just use it too much.

I like the fallen angels concept, their rich history, and the diminishing of the DA without the Lion, but damn it’s rough being a fan of such bewildering bastards, and that’s mostly up to the writing. Meanwhile the Blood Angel’s, “bad-side” is something beyond their control, so it’s very excusable, and the writers can’t help but make the BA glorious. I suspect it’s an exchange for having Sanguinious as basically the perfect primarch, and the fact that he had to die for that title. I’m a fan of the Angels of Absolution myself, they’re one of the second founding DA chapters. They decided they had nothing to prove, despite being aware of the fallen. And being 2nd founding means I can imagine they have the traditions and have access to plenty of ancient war-gear. So basically the closest the DA come to being normal.

Im currently working on a pre heresy dark angels army and i am struggling with the iconography and the squad markings and things. For example, do the standard tactical marines use the battlefield role marking of the battleline marines or the icon of their "wing" on their right pauldron? Did every marine belong to a "wing" or where there "wingless" marines? If thats the case, would a tactical marine who got promoted or introduced to lets say the stormwing replace his tactical marking on his right pauldron with the stormwing marking? What about, lets say the apothecarys? I read that each wing has apothecarys in them. Do they wear their apothecary marking or their "wings" icon on their right pauldron? And is it possible that the "wing" marking goes to the left pauldron and the battlefield role marking on the right? If yes, where does the legion icon belong? And well the same question applies for almost any unit and marking type haha

I feel like a lot of people here are underestimating the Lion’s own geneseed. It is the purest and best, no doubt. That alone allowed his Legion to regrow from nearly 90% casualties back to 180K. That proves one of his Legion’s best attributes; reliability. The Dark Angels may lord over the other Legiones Astartes with Hosts and Wings and Orders, but ultimately those are expressions of their purity of geneseed. I doubt any other Legion (except maybe XIII) could maintain an equivalent to the Orders and Wings if they didn’t have as pure a geneseed. Honestly the only reason the Dark Angels don’t have more successor Chapters by 40K is due to the High Lords fucking them over as (some would argue) rightfully due to Fallen shenanigans. If not for that the sons of the Lion would be way more widespread, ironically accomplishing their goals alongside protecting the people of the Imperium better than if the High Lords barred them from making Successor Chapters.

As far as the weaponry that "erases" its targets from reality/history: What would happen if this were used on Daemons? Are they truly destroyed? Also, what happens if it creates a temporal paradox? For example, what if the person who created this weapon was killed by it? IS it just a case of "this exists" while nothing has really been made that features how it works? Seems like it would constantly create paradoxes.

You do a fantastic job as always! But from what I am hearing the Dark Angels can outdo any other Legion in that Legion's own speciality, get special tech no-one else gets, get to ignore the Mechanicum because they don't need them on account of being super special and over all do everything anyone else does better and most of all _first_ ... Whatever you need, they have a Wing or an Order for that! I try to rationalise this as them being made as the prototype Legion but damn, what was the Emperor leaving for his other 19/20 kids to do? On the other side of this, if the Dark Angels style was so effective why specialise the other Legions at all - it would seem logical to grant them all such a wide-spanning and effective range of tools if it worked so well. If they'd been the only Legion or even the prototype Legion that set the pattern for the rest it would make a bit more sense to me, but as it sounds they feel like the equivalent of Clan Tremere who can do whatever your Clan does only with Thaumaturgy. Old reference. I always want to like the Dark Angels more than I end up doing but I try so hard!

I recommend baldemorts video on them to understand their strategical variety. Essentially they aren't the best at any of those specialties but they are the second best at all of them. Jack of all trades but master of none simply put. This makes them the most flexible of all legions in a given situation. Combined with their single minded pursuit of destroying their enemies makes them so effective.

For sure from a tabletop perspective in 40k it would be dumb for the DA to be so versatile. In 40k they have but a fraction of the concept. From the lore though I imagine the early DA are kinda a more mysterious and less generic version of what the Ultras would become; a highly populous and versatile fighting force than can largely be deployed alone in major campaigns. In the 40k era the DA are diminished but nonetheless versatile, but still less generic than the Ultras. I like the idea of the ancient history and technology, but I don’t imagine the DA could compete en masse with the more specialized legions/chapters at whatever they’re best at; White Scars, Ravenguard, Fists/Warriors, etc.
