Considering Oda Yashigaru are one of Japan first professional non-samurai units it kinda make sense they'll be so well disciplined and quite powerful.

Actually it's normal that how there is next to no gore or blood for spear wall. If you see their attack animation, they always kinda swing their spear and the enemy just dropped.

The first time I finished the game on Legendary I was playing as the Oda. I didn't even know Long Yari existed because I didn't have the DLC LOL. Then when I finally used Long Yari for the first time I was like I knew Yaris were strong but this is ridiculous.

its the GG unit just spam armys with them form a line and walk forward if you have the armor upgrade then archers are not even a problem anymore! nothing short of fire rockets can touch it ! cav? not needed archers? not needed just Yaris is enough!

just use some matchlocks juicy targets for them since they are extremely slow in yari wall and are easy to flank

Even older total war games had this thing with cavalry "breaking the charge" as they hit spear/bayonet wall. It's a shame they didn't implement that in Shogun 2.

are you talking about charge reflection? shogun 2 has that although it might not be as strong as some units in older totalwars

​@@Brandon34098 I didn't remember seeing it in Shogun 2. In Napoleon it looks as if the horsemen have some chance of dying without even engaging in an initiative roll with the infantry. Yari wall is of course a super strong counter to the cavalry, but I see no reason why they didn't make it as visually interesting as in older games.

3rd times the charm i keep accidentally deleting my reply, shogun 2 isnt perfect it got some dumbing down from medieval 2 but charge reflection in shogun 2 doesnt stop everything and yari wall is a trade off more damage per unit getting a successful charge off for spear density since not everything will be stopped and the implication of keeping horses out of the formation allowing the horse unit to pull away with minimal extra losses unless its on the side of a hill then horses wont have the speed to make it into the formation majority of the time if you dont want cav to pass through the formation thicker lines or not being in yari wall is a fix but at the same time unlike medieval 2 changing the unit sizes completely changes the balance of the game either way unlike new games a unit engaged in melee will suffer horrendous losses if they try to walk through any unit assuming they simply dont shatter/route shortly after the order and is also slowed by the unit they are trying to ignore

8:03 I actually had to resort to using that trick in my current campaign. Basically the Shoni landed a naval invasion way North, captured Miyagi and sallied out to attack my relief force. I think it was 8 veteran samurai units + general vs my 3 long yari, 2 regular ashigaru yari and 1 bow yari. I set up my forces on a steep hill and had my yaris guard the chokepoints, but lost. On my second attempt I abandoned some chokepoint and doubled up my yaris like in the video and got a heroic victory :)

In custom battles v. the AI I've won battles handily fielding nothing but long yaris in spear wall formation. Even naginatas, no-dachi, and monks can't stand up to them. The key is to stack at least 2 long yaris on top of each other for a dense formation. If the AI deploys lots of missile units I attack with my long yaris (while still in spear wall) to minimize casualties.

considering that you can field two oda yari ashigaru for the upkeep of one long yari ashigaru and you don't need any buildings for the ordinary yari I feel like you're overrating the slight stat boost that the long yari gets

It's not just slight stat boosts though, I don't think they're that slight anyway, especially the armour in the late game is a big deal, but it's the longer yari that makes them so good. It means they take a lot less damage in melee because enemies aren't hitting them as much. It's why Yari Samurai with Yari Wall is pretty disappointing, people made mods to give them the ability but due to the shorter yari it just isn't as effective as a regular yari wall, and the longer yari goes a step further and makes it even better. Either way though, I've made it abundantly clear in many videos that Yari Ashigaru is an amazing unit, and not far behind Long Yaris. It's unfortunate that the Oda are the only clan that can recruit Long Yaris as they already have the superior Yari Ashigaru, if Long Yari were available to any other clan it'd be a much better comparison.

@@MrSmartDonkeyLP The layered yari wall is a valid strategy in bringing a few to support basic yaris, but aside from that the unit is practically useless, skirmish testing showed that with both units in yari wall and ordered to run into each other, the Oda Yari pulled ahead in a 3 to 2 fight vs long Yari. In a 1v1 the Oda yari broke at 55 with the long yari at 66, as they have the same morale this means that the long oda barely won the fight

@@jankthunder4012 My tests show entirely different numbers, either way, try using both units against others. See how big the difference is against arrows, or against Katana Samurai, or whatever else. As I already said though, Oda Yari Ashigaru vs Long Yari is much closer than regular Yari Ashigaru vs Long Yari, which is the comparison I usually draw from. When I talk about Katana Samurai I don't use Shimazu Katana Samurai as the benchmark, that's skewing results for 11 other clans. Obviously with Long Yari they do compare directly to Oda Long Yari Ashigaru in campaign, but that's besides the point when simply comparing the power of units.

True, but you can only have so many units in a single stack; if you're looking to maximise the value of your death stack to win one battle after another, the value of better units can drastically reduce losses. That said you can always build 2 armies and move them in tandem, but then there are times (such as attacking or defending forts) where greater numbers doesn't always directly equate to greater fighting power;if you have a single city that acts as your bulwark against one side of the map while your armies take the other, then filling that fort with the best units on offer isn't a bad idea even if they cost more.

@@Neion8 I typically find that stacks are more about the ground I can cover and momentum personally, I can only manufacture so many units and one army can only block one lane, but I find that a single full stack of yari ashigaru + Bow samurai and yari cavalry can roll a full enemy stack without losing any units except yari ashigaru which I can build anywhere saving me a massive headache, and if the enemy outnumbers me one full stack can bait 2-3 stacks into a siege where I can usually pull a win and where the main threat to the ashigaru becomes archer spam, which long yaris don't help with
