I know that another justification for this might be to prevent nuisance calls... but why risk getting an innocent passenger stuck in a lift in the name of helping the call centre do a few minutes less work?

Just a tip.. I went to Poland lately, trams, lifts galore! Even some old soviet trams. Plus huge Schindlers and if you go to the Salt Mine near Krakow there is a 600ft lift where you just have metal panels and can see the sides of the chute as you ascend the mine. It also went very fast 👍 (stomach butterflies).

The problem I have with mobile phone calling emergency - what if the persons first langugage isn't english - and they can't actually read the instructions on that sign. The alarm button is quite a universal symbol - its known to be the emergency button - even if you don't speak the language of the locale of the lift.

Yeah, the phone is a good thing, but there should always be a backup bell button.

I noticed signs like that when I filmed the lifts at Morpeth train station (before anyone asks, I deleted the video a while ago, and I no longer film lifts as it can be hard to film them without showing my face, there is one car park in Newcastle where the video I recorded of those lifts has my face clearly visible)

Phones aswell again what if you have no signal. Very valid points made. Every train station lift now I’ve been in recently has that same sign. I’m curious to test it.

Wtf? Critical functions that rely on software or electronics should always fail *safe*. Software engineering 101…

This seems to be increasingly common in the modern day. Take a look at how many MRL lifts no longer use a bike cable for manual brake release for freeing trapped passengers. Nowadays most MRLs use electronic brake release and I often test this to see if it works and it is scary the number of times that it doesn't.

In most rail stations its just used as a deterrent, at least thats how it works for stations in West Yorkshire.

Network Rail, get your act together. Nobody wants this alarm operating this way, and install some Ecodiscs to replace the aging generic stuff. At least those are more efficient, which is paramount for when you have to board a train.
